Oscars

I'll Probably watch the preshow to see the dresses.

As far as the show itself, it's probably going to be political and frankly, I'm tired of politics at this point and don't care what a Hollywood celebrity thinks about anything.

Nothing new. Remember Marlon Brando not accepting his award? Mistreatment of Native Americans?

Same old, same old.
Not NEW, but definitely WORSE than it used to be. Far MORE political speeches that take up much more time. Also feels like the high horse has gotten even higher. I am beyond sick of it -- whether I agree with the underlying sentiment or not. Enough.

As many others have posted I'll be watching, just as I have every year since 1965

BUT

if it turns into a political commentary as it did last year I'm outta there. I could not care less if a person is conservative, liberal, gay, straight, transgender, foreign or domestic---that is not why I watch the Oscars. These folks are entertainers and get paid to entertain. Leave the "I'm famous so listen to me" crap in the chair before coming to the podium

For the majority on this thread complaining about an actor giving a political speech, I would like to know what exactly floats your boat when it comes to winners's speeches? Thanking mom, dad and god and Joe director? Because that's the normal boring speech. Just kill me now listening to that drivel. Personally, I am proud of anyone who uses a platform to speak up on any issue they feel is important enough.

I don't understand why people watch the shows live (assuming they have a DVR). We start watching an hour or so in and skip over the acceptance speeches. I don't have ANY problem with anyone getting political or using their 30 seconds to espouse a cause...in fact I prefer those over the boring "thanks Mom" type speeches, but I prefer to cut to the chase with these things (pun intended lol).

When it comes to celebrities, they are just people, and as such have just as much right to speak up for what they believe in (whether it matches what I believe in or not) as you or me. I also lend about as much importance to their opinions as I do to any random Joe-Blow on facebook or even my own mother, which is to say...none.

The only opinion that matters to me is mine.

Off the top of my head, ANY/ALL of this would be preferable to politics:
  • Thanking people pivotal to the success of the film you just won for
  • Anecdote about the film you just won for - something moving, funny, touching, whatever that happened during filming
  • Something that inspired you in the role you just won for
  • The real person he/she played if that's the case
  • Something about the theme or message of the film you just won for
  • Brief thanks to family/friends
That sort of thing.

Well, most years the "thanks to this laundry list of people" is what ALL the speeches are and it seems to go fine.

I do agree that whatever they choose to say, they get to the point. And get your butt up on stage already.

Bummer. I was hoping this thread would be about the movies, the actors, the directors, the winners, etc., not full of people whining about actors whining (according to the whiners). Oh well, I'll just do what they should have done, move on.

I use to watch it back on the olden days when it was one of the only things on tv. Now I would rather watch paint dry.

It's all underserving smug BS.

Mistakes happen. No one should lose their job over that mistake. I'm sure it will be all over the news tomorrow but honestly, who cares which movie won best picture.

The people who made la la land do. Mistakes happen and people lose their jobs over them all the time. What makes this different? Someone had a job to do and they failed.

I was working tonight and when I got home I turned on the television right as they announced Best Picture. I said,"Of course, La La Land". I went to the bathroom. I went back to the television. Am I crazy??!!! How did Moonlight also win Best Picture??!!! o_O :lmao:It was a confusing couple of minutes there.

Warren Beatty was clearly surprised when he pulled that card out of the envelope, he knew it was wrong.

Anthony Anderson is being such a total jerk on the after show saying he is lying and they purposely said the wrong name. Makes me glad I don't watch his show any more.
