I have been given 4 orchids and know nothing about caring for them. I have been given some basic info, but am a little intimidated after hearing that they need special care and food. They are established plants, and because the person who gave them to me got them from someone else, I'm looking for as much info as I can. I don't know what species they are or if that really makes a difference. I would love to have them bloom and enjoy them.

Success stories appreciated! :)

Oooo, I love orchids...but don't have any cause I'm scared too! My dentist has several and I always comment on them. Sorry i can't help you....but enjoy them!

Welcome to the F&G board, Angel717. :)

What a very nice gift! :) DH would love to grow orchids if he had the time. Gosh, I wish I could clone that man! :D

I've never grown them, and know nothing about them (except how beautiful they are!), but here are a couple of links to sites to help you get acquainted with them. I hope they help! :)

Growing Orchids Make sure to check out the FAQs page!

Any experienced orchid growers out there?

Thanks for the websites and encouragement. I have had them for about a week now and so far, so good! LOL One of them wasn't doing very well when I got it, but it looks like it might be coming back.

I currently have them in my dining room near a window, and if they survive the winter, their summer home will be on the porch. Wish me luck! :)

Just sending a bit of hope. I am the Mengele of the plant world, according to DH. But I have had an Orchid for 3 years now and it has bloomed every year, and is doing very well. I have it in very bright, but indierct light, in a warmish spot (Set back from a south facing bay window). I water it once a week, and I just had to re pot it this summer. It is beautiful and I have developed quite an attatchment to it. It is my baby. Every November, when the little stick of buds pops up, I haul the whole fam damily into the living room and cheer! ::yes:: Don't worry about it. just give it what it needs, and don't kill it with kindness. Keep it away from drafts, pets, kids, and direct sun. Have you seen the wild ones that frow in Hawaii? Just think about what they get in their native land, and do your best to give them those things. BTW, I just had a bloom on one of my Amarillis for the second year in a row. I'm hopeful that my other will eventually bloom too!

Keep the Faith!

Tracy, I think what you really have, is a green thumb for the exotic!!

That may be. Kind of like my cooking! I can whip up a mean rack of lamb, but can't microwave a hot dog! :p

DH says that I do well with things that normally grow in a harsh environment. ::yes::

Keep the Faith!

ROTFL Tracy!! Hey, that's okay, I'd take the rack of lamb over a hot dog anyday!! :teeth:
