Didn't you say minorities shouldn't make spectacles of themselves? Should blacks sit at the back of the bus 'n women stay home where they belong or was it okay for them to speak up about the injustice of differential rights/privileges in our society?

Oh ok. Yes, I believe minorities shouldn't make spectacles of themselves, my Asian husband, my Black BIL and my Gay BIL included. And they don't. They don't sit at the back of the bus, either. When an instance of prejudice comes up, they speak out about it. They just don't make themselves walking billboards for the cause.

Aisling- I've heard the same "I can't relate to her" line from 15-16 year olds. Though Tangled no problem and the non Caucasian children are expected to relate to Snow White or Cinderella.

There are many places of employment where they can be told they're fired because they're gay. And they didn't even wear a T shirt that supports equal rights for gays. ;)

I'll believe you, even though I do find it hard to believe. Maybe because I live in NYC with tons of Gays everywhere, gainfully employed, I haven't seen prejudice in employment, but in other aspects, yes.

I have to go pick up my son now. Good discussion!:thumbsup2

I guess my only problem with the entire LGBT community is the amount of shoving in peoples faces that is going on these days. It's overkill on many levels. The civil rights movement wasn't this in your face IMHO.
Really? You might want to do a little research. It's easy to forget over time, or maybe certain aspects of American history were skipped when we were being taught.

Rosa Parks? Martin Luther King? The March on Washington? Desegregation? Jesse Jackson? Al Sharpton? Those aren't 'in your face' but a few t-shirts are?

For the record, I actually don't believe "pride" is the right word. Because if you are born that way, it's really nothing to have pride about. You can't change it. I think the word should just be "acceptance" because that's all people are looking for. They're not looking to convert straight people to be gay, it's just about being accepted and not persecuted for being who they are. But "pride" is so ingrained in our thought process about this now, and I don't think it's going anywhere. So I use it.

Also, if anyone was wondering, I live in NYC and went to the huge store on 34th Street to ask about the shirts. They didn't have them yet, but a manager said they were definitely going to be getting them in but she didn't know when. Take that as you will.

I know White people who won't go to a Black doctor because they say theyre not smart enough. But these are older people who still have the really racist attitudes, saying Blacks are inferior, and I know that the younger generation doesn't feel that way. But that terrible racism did/does exist.

As for telling Gays theyre deviants and going to hell, it breaks my heart.

Oh my goodness, I'm not saying racism against blacks had magically disappeared! You only have to look at the awful things that are said about our President on a daily basis to see that. How blacks are denied jobs due to their "funny names", the justice system and how it applies to minorities, etc. Everyday, racism rears it's ugly head, but in a more subtle and sinister way. We have come along way from the era before the civil rights movement, but we still have a long way to go.

But, I hate that it seems justified to vilify gays in order to save their souls, so to speak. Certain people warp the bible to preach hate and intolerance. Look at the funding a certain major church used to help get Prop 8 in CA passed. How Pastor Rick Warren has been linked to the awful anti gay laws in Uganda that can lead to execution.

What astounds me is someone, like a certain poster, who has experienced the degradation racism can have on their soul be so apathetic to human beings that are being subjected to the same kind of hate and intolerance.

They feel ashamed and embarrassed because how would you feel if you were told you were unnatural? That you were going to hell just because of who you want to love openly. That you're a deviant, you are a pedophile, every nasty thing that can be thrown at them.

Progress would never happen if everyone had an attitude like you. And I doubt the civil rights movement would have gotten off the ground if brave black, white, brown, whatever color people had not stood up and "wasted energy". The civil rights movement was about as in your face as you can get for an era with no cable news networks and social media. I guess I'll just have to waste even more energy for your lack of compassion.

That line has been used toward non Caucasians as well. Don't see them hiding but you can't hide how you look though.

I agree the difference in the Civil right movement and the LGBT movement- media. I think the CRM was televised but it was more about the one on one interaction. To me it's somewhat less intrusive. But yes, Media is the difference but I think that the lack of media(internet) made it better for the CRM. By no means am I saying it was not intense but just not as in your face as this movement.

Maybe we want folks like you to know what's goin' on, reminds me of the ol' Marvin Gaye song. :goodvibes

It's the human aspect. TO ME, it's less in your face than t-shirts and banners, flags and parades. Like I said there should be no shame if this is who you are but the fact that there is shame makes me ponder and wonder. I'm very proud to be black, but I also can't hide it so it's there. I was born black, can't change it can't hide it but i would and have NEVER felt shamed or ashamed of that.

Angela Davis 'n the Black Panthers weren't in folks' face, ummm, okay. :lmao:

Believe me I am not ashamed of being gay. I was born this way and it isn't something I can change. But, to constantly deal with the pressure of being told "you were not born this way, you can change" is a lot for any gay person to handle.

I'd like to see Old Navy sell some "save the babies" tshirts. There are far too many people who don't mind seeing innocent children in the womb murdered. After all, there should be equal rights for everyone.

I am pro life and I support the Gay and Lesbian community. Wow I wonder where that puts me on the political spectrum!

The shirt is really cute; although I probably never would have figured out it was a gay friendly shirt unless I read the Dis. I learn so much here! Hoping my store carries them!

I probably wouldn't have realized it either just by looking at it, except that now I know because I read it on here. It looks somewhat generic, and maybe they designed the shirt that way so that it's not something that's in your face, so to speak.

I never shop at Old Navy, but certainly don't see anything wrong with the shirt.

Darlin', I don't care if you were born that way or it's a choice, you have a right to love anybody ya want! And along with that, you should also have access to marriage, employment, housin' 'n all the other rights Americans have privilege to. :goodvibes

And you shouldn't be expected to change. YOU are who YOU are.

Like just recently during that last presidential election. I guess she missed the videos of the obvious in your face voter intimidation tactics they were engaging in!

Thank you! I feel extremely lucky to live in the state of Massachusetts, where I was able to legally marry DW almost 3 years ago

I love hearing that! Our friends, retired military officers as a matter of fact, got married in D.C. last year after 35 years together. It's a wonderful thing to hear these happy stories!

You know those people are ignorant and really aren’t worth your time!
