Old Navy Debuts Gay Pride T-Shirts For It Gets Better

Not really, because the truth is that a racist is going to take their child to see a movie with black characters. I missed the part where someone born a certain race other than Caucasian isn't trying to live their lives. I guess my only problem with the entire LGBT community is the amount of shoving in peoples faces that is going on these days. It's overkill on many levels. The civil rights movement wasn't this in your face IMHO. At some point the community has to realize, just like how some races have, that people are going to dislike you and hate you. Is it right NO but it just is. Yes, the It Gets Better campaign is great, it's subtle and supportive.

You can't be serious. You just CAN'T.

I'm not sure I get the relationship. You're omitting a vital bit of information; you should be asking, "Did people embrace the first Disney movie about a fictional black Princess as much as...?"

That movie character is entirely different from real people just trying to go about their daily lives without being harassed.

I'm fortunate that I do get the relationship between the two that the poster is bringing up. One of my brothers-in-law is Black and another one is Gay and has been married to his husband for 16 years. I have nieces and nephews growing up in a two-daddy home and also in a mixed race home, so I have first-hand knowledge on a daily basis of how Gays and Blacks are treated by society. Neither of my BILs are the militant, flag-waving types trying to make change in society. They're just regular people living their lives who have come across prejudice but just continue to be who they are without the need to wear it on their chest. You won't find a Black Is Beautiful or a Gay Pride shirt anywhere in their possessions. They just live and teach their children the facts of society, and you know what, that in itself teaches tolerance from others.

Yes, there are some people who continue to believe that it's wrong for two Gay men to be married and raising two adopted daughters, and it's wrong for my White sister to be married to a Black man and have three mixed children, but they go on being decent people and that's enough for them. It's by example that we learn as a society, not by becoming walking billboards promoting a cause that's simply life for them. And both my Gay and Black BILs will be the first to tell you that. THEY are the ones who have shaped my opinion, not the people who jump on the t-shirt bandwagon because they want to be one of the cool kids saying LOOK AT ME, I SUPPORT GAYS.

The reason I understand where the poster is coming from is because I've seen more prejudice against my Black BIL and my "mixed" niece and nephew than with my Gay BIL. When the Tiana movie came out, my niece said "there's a princess just like me". But to the majority, that princess wasn't like them, and I do believe it was a reason the movie wasn't as big as the other princess movies. (And the songs sucked ).

I'm just thowing my personal perspective in there.

I'd like to see Old Navy sell some "save the babies" tshirts. There are far too many people who don't mind seeing innocent children in the womb murdered. After all, there should be equal rights for everyone.

Why the need? Because there are still entirely too many people in this country who do not support everyone's right to equality. Because there are too many young gay people embarrassed about there sexuality that should absolutely not be. Because these young people need to know that there are people out there who support them. Because there is nothing about this fight for equality that isn't right, and if a big company wants to publicly get on board, then it's a step in the right direction. And because the rainbows are pretty! ;)

But why. I guess that too has always been one of my question. How can you be ashamed or embarrassed about who you are if we are going on the idea that you are "born" gay? I just don't believe that there will never be equality in this country for everyone. I don't know why I have such little faith in it happening but I just don't think it will happen. The people who influence the politicians aren't supporters and if they pull their money, politicians will have nothing. For there to be real equality EVERYTHING would have to be destroyed and rebuilt.

I'm African American, born that way and I KNOW there are people who hate me, believe that I am less than human and that my husband should own me, for only that reason. Does it bother me yes but am I about to go change their minds and waste energy on it, no.

You won't see that because it isn't cool enough.

It'll never happen. Why? It's not "politically correct enough" to want to save the lives of innocent human beings. It's better to promote something that the company knows will sell to the liberal majority.

And my children have been embarrassed when they've been called "chinks" because my husband is Asian. There are causes galore. Wearing t-shirts isn't going to do squat. It's a marketing ploy by Old Navy. The best way to teach tolerance if you're one of the many minorities is to live decently and not make a spectacle of yourself.

By the way, when my DH and I were first married and looking for an apt, one landlord made a negative comment about our future children. We didn't put on Race Equality t-shirts, we just found another apt and have been living happily ever after for 30 years, with a few racist bumps in the road.

I might get flamed but I i totally agree with this! I saw a bumper sticker the other day that said "It's not a choice, it's a child" I thought it was great. It's an issue close to my heart.

I support gay rights wholeheartedly but I wouldn't buy the shirt. Just not a fan of message tees. They look crappy on me and I rarely wear them  I can support the LGBT community in different ways. :)

I'm also pro-choice, although I wouldn't elect to have an abortion personally. That being said, I wouldn't be interested in a "Save the Fetuses" shirt for the same reason I wouldn't buy the Old Navy shirts. (re: I dislike message tees. I don't need to be a billboard. I can express my opinions without my shirt doing it for me).

Also, we didn't like Princess and the Frog because we thought it was boring (music was fun but it's not a move I'd want to watch over and over again like the many other Disney movies I have in my collection). Does that make us members of the KKK? No. Do we hate black people? Absolutely not. Are we racist? No. We just don't like the movie. Ever think that could be the reason why it didn't do well in theaters? Crappy reviews? Word of mouth that it wasn't great?

As far as the post that said something along the lines of "do you buy your girls racially different babydolls?"... the same could be shot back at you, PP. Do YOU buy your girls dolls that are racially different from your girls? Racism can go both ways, if you'd like to play that card. It's not just "white" people who are "racist". Not pointing fingers by any means- just saying that it's possible for racism to occur regardless your race.

Regardless, YAY for some of the $ going to It Gets Better.

Should they go to the back of the bus or stay in the kitchen/home where they belong?

First bolded, :thumbsup2.

Second bolded: my Black niece (who's half White but looks Black) never wanted a Black doll when she was little because they "weren't pretty". Gee, I wonder where she got that message from?

That was 16 years ago, and happily I see that destructive "only white skin, blond, blue eyes is pretty" image saturation diminishing. Thank God.

They feel ashamed and embarrassed because how would you feel if you were told you were unnatural? That you were going to hell just because of who you want to love openly. That you're a deviant, you are a pedophile, every nasty thing that can be thrown at them.

Progress would never happen if everyone had an attitude like you. And I doubt the civil rights movement would have gotten off the ground if brave black, white, brown, whatever color people had not stood up and "wasted energy". The civil rights movement was about as in your face as you can get for an era with no cable news networks and social media. I guess I'll just have to waste even more energy for your lack of compassion.

Uncle, nevermind, I gotcha. And the answer is no.

It's a great thing!! :thumbsup2 It's exciting to see how many different babydolls/Barbies in all different races, hair colors, etc are available today.

Well, I don't know your age specifically, but I'm guessing you're not a preteen or young teen who is being told by their parents, relatives, and peers that who they inherently are is wrong. I don't think anyone believes being African American is a choice, but there are PLENTY of people who believe being gay is a choice. I can say from experience that seeing other people out there in the world that support you, even if it doesn't come from within your home, does help. Should young people be embarrassed about being gay? Absolutely not. But that doesn't mean they aren't. They're way too young to have that rational thought process. They just know that their parents hate them, their church hates them, and probably some of their friends hate them. I think that's the reason.

And just because there might never be equality in this country for everyone doesn't mean we shouldn't strive for it.

I know White people who won't go to a Black doctor because they say theyre not smart enough. But these are older people who still have the really racist attitudes, saying Blacks are inferior, and I know that the younger generation doesn't feel that way. But that terrible racism did/does exist.

As for telling Gays theyre deviants and going to hell, it breaks my heart.

You lost me on that one, Uncle. Huh?

Didn't you say minorities shouldn't make spectacles of themselves? Should blacks sit at the back of the bus 'n women stay home where they belong or was it okay for them to speak up about the injustice of differential rights/privileges in our society?

And just because there might never be equality in this country for everyone doesn't mean we shouldn't strive for it.

I agree with you 100% !! My opinion just differs on the WAYS of striving for it.

There are many places of employment where they can be told they're fired because they're gay. And they didn't even wear a T shirt that supports equal rights for gays. ;)
