Oh, no! The SNOW BIRDS are back!

They don't come to my area, so they don't bother me. However, I wouldn't want to be in Ft. Lauderdale area.

I'm tired of it too. Would love to live on the west coast of the U.S.

Actually the snow birds are behind you in line hitting your ankles with their carts.
I picture you being in your 20's, Legs22! :) You crack me up with the snow birds hitting you in the ankles with their carts...BUT YOU'RE RIGHT! :earseek:

Okay, if all of the tourists and snowbirds did not go to Florida what would left there.
Our beloved Mickey Mouse would have to close up shop and move elsewhere because, tourism is what keeps Florida going.
Can anyone tell me other than tourism and citrus growing, what type of industry, etc. makes its home in Florida?
Nothing I can think of.

I was just wondering!
I figured there has to be something else there other than tourism?
Maybe I will have to use my internet for something other than the DIS boards  and do some research on the State of Florida. :D

I'm sure tourism is the #1 industry in FL. There's always the farmers.

Thanks, Cindy!! It's taken me years to figure out what I want! LOL!

Isn't Florida the No. 1 state for beef? One time, when driving from in-laws place in Punta Gorda to WDW, we decided to go through the middle of the state. There were cattle everywhere. And there were miles and miles of a crop that took us a long time to figure out. I think it was sugarcane?

Okay just to prove the internet is good for more than talking to your 57,000 best friends I looked up the economy of Florida.

Tourism seems to be at the top
Farming & food production - citrus, tomatoes, sugar cane, corn, dairy cattle, beef cattle
Commercial fishing
printed & published materials
electrical & electronic equipment
transportation equipment
lumber

We have all had our education for the day.

LOL! You're too funny! The only ones that do talking like that with the cashiers are the seniors for whom a trip to the grocery store is their social hour. Working people don't do it!
This working person does, but then I get off at 2:30 or 3:20 depending on where I teach so I can hit the grocery earlier than most. I like to be friendly and I really enjoy talking to the cashiers at my Publix.

The BIG news here is the biomedical research company called Scripps Research (from La Jolla, CA) is moving into Palm Beach County:

The Scripps Research Institute is the largest, private, non-profit research organization in the U.S. It has attained recognition as a center of excellence in a highly focused branch of research, the nexus of the structure of biological molecules and their cellular functions with chemical synthesis."

The Scripps Research Institute (TSRI) has announced plans to establish a major science center in Palm Beach County, Florida, focusing on biomedical research, technology development, and drug design.

The announcement comes after months of discussions with Florida Governor Jeb Bush and state and local leaders. The facilities and initial staffing for the new center will be supported by Florida state and local government.

"Based on our history and experience in La Jolla, the extension of Scripps activities will increase the scope and depth of significant research in biomedical science," said TSRI President Richard A. Lerner. "The synergy between Scripps biomedical research in California and Florida is expected to lead to major new developments to improve human health."

The expansion is expected to boost Florida's economic development in biotechnology, just as the Scripps campus in La Jolla has served as the seeding ground and economic stimulus for the burgeoning bioscience industries in Southern California. Approximately 40 companies have grown out of Scripps research and technology developments.

Governor Bush said, "Scripps is the brand name in biomedical research and we are honored they have chosen Florida to expand their current research facilities. Already known for breakthroughs for cancer and Alzheimer's disease, this new bi-coastal presence will bring even greater opportunities for life-saving and life-enhancing research."

TSRI will also collaborate with and support local industry and businesses, the university system, and school districts in the region, as it has done in San Diego.

Beginning in 2004, TSRI expects to occupy temporary laboratory space while it constructs a state-of-the-art, 364,000-square-foot facility on 100 acres to be occupied in 2006.

"The Scripps Research Institute is grateful to Governor Bush and the people of Palm Beach County and throughout Florida for this exciting, challenging opportunity to expand our knowledge of biomedical science and to contribute to the improvement of human health," Lerner said.

Good going, Crusin!! ROFL...57,000 best friends! LOL! I think it might be McGraw-Hill that's in Orlando. Is that right? There's some publisher there. I drove right into their driveway when I got lost last time.

Interesting! And I wonder if they're moving to my town!! I know Tenet Health Care is doing something similar here. And where IBM used to occupy several buildings, I see NEW buildings going up!!

Legs22: Wow, that medical research company sounds like it might be a big boost to the local economy. I hope that they will be able to hire some local people to work there.
My BIL is in medical research but he is in Cleveland, Ohio.

Pin Wizard: I don't know what company it is? I picked up a dictionary off my desk just to look and it says it was published in Miami, mind you it is very old, 1989 edition!!

Scripps is suppose to move to Palm Beach Gardens.

Yes, western PBG on Mecca Farms land.

So it's sunny and warm -- BIG DEAL. I love how all Floridians think all of us northerners are just dying to relocate there. My town is beautiful, it looks like something out of Norman Rockwell, crime rate is near non-existent, I can send my kids all over town on their bikes without a worry, the school system is top notch. What did I see in Florida -- nothing but strip mall after strip mall, couldn't even tell one town from the next. The school systems were nowhere near the caliber of the one we are in, spending per student was about 1/2 what we spend. From what I read in the papers and talking to others you can't let your kids out of your sight. I like fall, I like field hockey, I like snow and skiing and ice skating and sledding, I like looking forward to spring and summer, I also like closing up my pool at the end of August because I'm tired of it. I love living up north, snow, ice and all. I just took my dog for a walk and all I could think of was - God I'm going to hate looking at those stupid palm trees all the time. I also won't fit in because I don't have fake boobs, fake nails or a fake tan, won't pierce my naval or bare my belly 24/7.
