OFFICIAL January 2012 5K, Half Marathon, Marathon, Goofy or Dopey Challenge Thread

Do they have discounted park tickets for this event? I did see some at GetTravel, but the Princess tickets have a better deal. I have look at every link on the WDW Marathon site. I will call IRUN later.
Thanks for any info!

I have read that there are not discounted tickets for marathon weekend.

Finally signed up for the marathon relay. Wish I was in better shape/faster though. Had to bag out of most of today's speedwork session. It was dreadful. LR are going okay, just can't get the speedwork & tempo runs where I'd like them to be. Probably trying to do too much too fast.

If you work with a Disney travel agent their agency may have some rooms at more of a discount than that. Our agent had blocks of rooms at bunch of resorts blocked off and the discount on those rooms was greater than the discount currently being offered by Disney. Most of their group rate rooms were already booked. When I booked last week they had 4 or 5 left at POR and that was about it.

Glad to see you pulled the trigger. There's still 2 more months before the race so a lot could happen.

You'll still be running laps around me.....

Is anyone running the 2012 full as their first marathon?

What are your goals? What's your current long run?

Also, where is everyone staying?

2012 will be my first marathon and my first goofy. My goal is just to finish both. My current long run is 13 miles. My RP is typically around 8 mm, but for the marathon my goal will be between 10 and 11 mm.

2012 Goofy will be my first marathon. My goal is just to finish. My current long run is 7 miles at 15:00 followed by 15 miles at 13:00 the next day. Tomorrow/Saturday, I will do my 7mi/17mi training run.

We are staying at Wilderness Lodge Wednesday thru Monday. I just hatched a plan to drive down a week earlier and spend some time in the Keys. DBF and DS11 will fly home for work/school, and DBF and his DS11 will fly back down for marathon weekend. I'm a little worried about getting in my last few training runs, especially since I will be alone with DS6 for a few days, but I figure I can rent him a bike somewhere and we can go out together.

I have a question for any previous Goofy people...
How important are the back to back long runs if my goal is to simply finish both races? I'm running my 3rd marathon on Sunday, then I'll be back to Goofy training in a few weeks after allowing time to recover. Do I need to really focus on getting in back to back long runs, or will that just increase my chance of injury before January?

Everyone is going to have a different answer for this question. Personally, I haven't found them necessary. I train for Goofy just like I'm training for any other marathon - steady buildup of long runs, 2 peak runs of 20 miles or more, and a relatively short taper of 2-3 weeks. That's enough to get me used to running on tired legs without doing any back to back long runs. Plus, I run nice and slow and easy for the half to make sure I've got plenty of energy for the full.

I just need to complain. I know you guys will understand. Training for my third Goofy. Did a 16 mile run yesterday. It was awful. The weather was fine, but I was SOOOOO slow and had to stop and walk more than usual. I did not feel like i was injured just everything hurt. I was so disappointed. Thankfully my ice bath did make me feel a little better. Of course it is the next day and my back is sore. Am supposed to run today but not sure I can do it. Will take the dogs for a nice long walk, hoping that will help me loosen up.

The week before I did 12 and it was a good run. Just seems this year training I have been struggling with times.

I guess I should be happy that I did it.

Thanks for listening

Somebody told me once that those are the runs that count the most. I don't know if it's true or not, but it always makes me feel better on those days when I bonk a run. Good luck as you go forward. Happy thoughts to you!

Hi Everyone-

Anyone have first-hand experience with the race retreat? My partner is running the Marathon and I have purchased the Platinum Chear Squad package.

Wanted to know what type of set up I can expect. Would anyone happen to have a link to some photos from past years?

Very excited about this.

Well i shook off the long run on sat and did a nice long walk with the dogs on sunday. I think i have been worried about injury my legs just have not been feeling good. Ran on tuesday, actually felt good to loosen up. I did hard spin class on wednesday at the end of class on the final push i felt it.....my calf. It started to hurt like the muscle strain (have done it before the 2008 marathon and done it twice before that). I know exactly how it feels. It was not too bad as i was only in spin can't imagine if i had been running. I am trying to RICE (rest is not easy i did ellptical and no running). I did not over due it and made sure ellptical did not hurt. I think i will scrap my runs for this weekend (thankfully short since i did 16 last weekend). Am kind of bummed but keep telling myself a week off now is better than running one more week and being off for 6 weeks. Yes last time i did this i could barely walk and had to stop training for 6 weeks, leaving two weeks of running before the marathon.

Hope everyone else is doing good.

My daughter will be running in the half. She is an avid runner 2-3 miles 3 times a week. This will be her first half though and has never had a timed 10K before. She will be running a 10k in mid November. I am confident she will run a fast enough time to get out of the last corral.

My question is can she register now and update her time or would she have to wait until she runs the 10K and possibly be shut out? Sorry if this has been asked before and I appreciate any guidance.

Yes, you can bring new proof of time to the expo and get reassigned there.

This year I did an off-road 1/2 marathon and 50K so my times were slow. Last year I did a 1/2 marathon in 2:25 (ran with pulled hamstring), would that be good enough to move me up in the corrals?

I ran 7 miles last night... my longest mid-week run, ever. Can't wait to do my short run tonight and then 15 this weekend!

Anything better than 2:45 equivalent (the bogie for proof of time) should move you up. Always submit a time and try to move up---cause you can always slide back a corral on race day if you want (but why would you want :) )

Ran 7 tempo miles today....MUCH better than the aborted speedwork session on Wednesday. We'll see what the next couple of weeks bring. I am off to MA to visit mom (with dog) and help my daughter relocate back from her stay in Germany to Boston. Can get runs in, but am no good doing speedwork without a TM.

How do you get a proof of time that they will accept? I have a 10K in november - when I first signed up in may, I was just starting running, so I put the full 3 1/2 hours - I definitely want to move up from that!
