OFFICIAL January 2012 5K, Half Marathon, Marathon, Goofy or Dopey Challenge Thread

I'm looking for a partner too! There's a seperate thread here just for folks looking... You can check their too for others. I'd prefer to do the second half bcs I'm a walker... Finished w&d in 3:32, hoping to shave 10 min or so off before Jan. PM me if you are interested!!!

Why not run the half on Saturday and the relay on Sunday? That'll get you a chipmunk medal and the special Donald medal for the 15th anniversary. :)

I like this idea too!

Great job everyone on the wine and dine! I'm hoping we could squeeze in another trip in September and I'd LOVE to be able to do that. If not 2013 it is!

Just finished my first half at W&D and had an amazing time. I am signed up for the half in Jan, but really interested in also doing the marathon relay. I am looking for a partner. Where would I post this if not this thread?

Thanks!
Amanda

Amanda Come post over here with your desired leg and expected time. Soon, I will attempt to play matchmaker, since it's getting closer and closer.

Hello everyone.

Just wanted to share that I spent this morning running a marathon here in beautiful Victoria, BC. Nice blue sky but cool weather, perfect for the race. I set up a play list filled with Disney music (and a few other songs too) and achieved my time goal.

This is my second full marathon, with my first being WDW in January, but I had hurt my knee halfway through the WDW full and had to spend the second half of the run partly running/partly walking. This time both legs stayed healthy and I improved my finish time by an hour and ten minutes.

Good luck to everyone else in their continuing training and fall events.

Next up for me, the Goofy Challenge (and the WDW half for my wife and kids races for DD and DS)!

Fantastic news 9798! Congratulations on making your goal. What's been your plan? My first full will be Jan. I can do it if I just stay healthy.

What did you change from your first attempt?

Ronda

Just signed up w my partner for the Marathon Relay! Definitely excited! I didn't think I could pull off a full marathon this year, will do it next year for the 20th anniversary. I ran last year's but couldnt commit the time to train for the full this year, an inaugural marathon relay is the next best thing!

Team Go For Broke (since we're both broke after running all these Disney races!) will be ready to go for the relay!

Hey everyone! I just found your thread and, although DH and I aren't at the level you all are, I am excited that we are signed up for our first Disney race! We are doing the 5k. I've done a few in my area but DH has never raced before. We can't wait!! :yay:

Ronda:

I think the main change was that although last year I did follow an organized plan for beginners (Marathoning for Mortals), I didn't vary my effort level and just trained hard every time, which lead me to the injury. I didn't do some runs slow and easy and others at more of a tempo pace just everything at a pace that pushed the limits of my comfort zone.

This year, I've been using a Runners World "Smart Coach" app on my iPhone (I think you can get the same plans through their website) where you input what a recent race or run time was, your goal distance (10K, Half or full marathon, etc.), how long until it is scheduled and the plac generated is very explicit about the types of runs to do, distances, and a suggested pace to run them.

So far it's worked for a half marathon in June and the full just today with little to no injuries.

Good luck to you in the training. For your first full just keep the goals simple, to finish and still be able to walk afterwards.

I don't think on these boards it's an issue what level you are at or what distance you are training for, just that you're willing to sign up and give it a try. And a healthy love of the mouse helps around here too!:goodvibes

My goal for 2012- to earn the Coast to Coast medal!
I'm signed up for the Donald. My 19yr old son is going to run it with me because he's embarrassed that his mom can run a 1/2 (W&D 2011, my 1st)
and he hasn't.

We share that goal. Running the Donald and then running the DL 1/2 in Sept.

Then going to go for the WDW Full in 2013.... :scared1:

Same goal for me too. Going for Goofy in January, then the DL half later in the year. I've already made our DVC Grand Californian reservation for the 2012 Labor Day weekend.

Hi Everyone,

I'm located up in WNY and starting to prepare for winter running. If you live in the north what do you do during the cold sloppy conditions? I've been running in Saucony Ride 3 and love them, I came across the Saucony Razor (waterproof) running shoe. Upon reading about them they appear to be more of a trail shoe with a little beefier sole which seemed to be a perfect fit for our snowy conditions. However, some of the comments I have seen on other site indicate that they are ok for some road running, I do most of my running on the road. Anyone have any experience with these or have any other recommendations for winter running? I don't relish the idea of doing laps (11/mile) at the YMCA for my 20 miler, so I'm trying to prepare to do as much of my training outside.

Thanks,

Cam

Hi Cam. No experience with the shoes, but last winter I used an empty parking garage for long runs a couple of times. It was the same building as the gym. I could TM a few miles and use the garage ramps for hills. Then back to the TM. The temp change was the worst part. Our snow doesn't usually stick around, but there was a month of dangerous sidewalks.

Good luck with your training.

My run this morning was the best of my Tuesday route and the worst of my Thursday route. I saw driving in that the power was out along part of my route. The moon had just set and it was DARK. Forbidden forest dark. I don't mind dark, but I wasn't sure if the walnut hazard removal team had finished their work. I turned around and ran the worst hills of my Thursday route. It's in the books.

Cam,

I am from Wis and I run outside all year. This is the first time I am training for a marathon in the winter. As long as you know how to dress for the conditions you should do fine. Carring water could be a little more of a challenge. If you are running on snow covered roads they have things like yaktrax that you can pull over your shoes for traction. I also have a pair of old shoes that I put screws in the bottom.

Well, I have had an interesting development. On Sunday, I went for my 6.5 mile walk/run following my training plan for the 1/2 marathon. My left foot was very tight throughout & was really hurting afterwards, but then eased off until 12:30am when I awoke in intense pain. Went to ortho yesterday & I have a stress fracture in my left foot. To further complicate things, we have back to back Dream cruises scheduled leaving in 12 days. The ortho recommended not traveling because I cannot weight bear for at least 3 weeks & will be in a boot, crutches & some pain. :sad2: No way to reschedule the cruises (without loosing lots of money etc) so I will be cruising with a boot/crutches/wheelchair & making the best of it & I am sure still having a fabulous time with some adjustments like not being able to do the Castaway Cay 5K that I was looking forward to doing.

I guess, too this will totally ruin my dream of doing the 1/2. He said 3 weeks at minimum with no weight bearing & then re xray & see where we go from there. If it is healing, I think I will still have to limit activity for 6 weeks total which would put us into late Nov/Dec & there is no way I can get back up to speed by January. Sad, sad, sad because I was doing so well. :sad1: But bright side is, I still get to tag along for the trip & be proud of my DH for doing his 2nd half. :woohoo:

Melanie Sending a boat-load of pixiedust: your way for a speedy recovery. I wouldn't totally give up hope yet of doing the half--but better safe than sorry.

Cam I don't have special shoes or Yak-Trax. (My potential issue with Yak Trax is they don't seem to be very durable and I am constantly going between snow/slush surfaces and bare/wet surfaces--where I wouldn't need them) There have been only a couple of times when I wished I did. My strategy for dealing with lousy conditions is to: 1) seek out the least snow-covered routes and run laps of them, if I have to (Better a 5 mile loop on reasonable roads then 15 miles on a TM). 2) Reschedule my long run by 1-3 days to take advantage of favorable weather. 3) If all else fails, I have done a run as long as 15 miles on a TM. My secret for maintaining sanity was to break it up into 3 5-miles segments (corresponds to my fuel breaks) and switch TM after 5 miles. Not a big deal, but it was easier to "just do a few" miles on a TM than do all 15 on the same one.

Another meh day training today. blew off the speedwork and just did a 5 mile run. Think I'll "resume my normally shceduled programming" next week.

I'm sure this has been asked many times before and I apologize for asking once again but...

Are there any special hotel rates for runners? If so do you know the prices? Thank you!!!
