Official inaugural Tower of Terror 10 miler thread. September 29, 2012

So I did it today - 10 Miles!!! :cool1: Woo HOO! :cool1:

My run went really well today. I skipped going to the gym yesterday, which made a world of difference - my legs felt fresh and ready to go! I still had some tummy issues around 4 miles and had to use the nasty porta potty again, :rolleyes2 but I think that's just me; I can live with it. The only other issue I had was some painful thigh chafing from my shorts which is making me rethink what I'm going to wear during the race. When I got in the shower and the soapy water hit the area - YOWEE! That hurt! But all in all, it was a great run!

This really feels like a miracle to me! A year ago, I couldn't run more than a block without stopping to catch my breath, and now I can run 10 Miles! It seemed like something completely out of my reach, but now I have the confidence that I CAN DO IT! I can't express how amazingly good that feels!

GAH! Not only did my planned 10 not happen, neither did 9, 8, 7, or 6. I squeezed out a total of 5 miles, but had to stop running after 3 and walk the rest. I'm ready to pull my freaking IT Band out and beat it! Oddly, it's not just outside knee pain, but inside, too. Also, aching and cramping in my foot and ankle. I'm falling apart!

I'm off to Universal the next two days, so lots of walking. Guess it'll either stretch things out or make it worse...

Congrats on your first 10 miler! I think skipping that trip to the gym really is the trick...the day before a long run is ALWAYS a rest day for me!

At nearly every race I do, I get a couple of tiny rubbed spots on my lower back from the waistband of my shorts...never happens during training for some reason and I wear the same shorts! But I know what you mean...you don't even know its there until the shower hits it...nice surprise :)

Sorry if someone posted those already, but have you guys seen the glow in the dark Raw Threads tees?? http://rawthreads.org/glowinthedark.aspx

I am thinking of getting the Sea Witch one to go with my purple SparkleSkirt. I was so excited the other day when I got a neon orange Godry tee from Old Navy for 6 bucks and had totally planned on wearing it...this may change my mind...

If you get chafing anywhere you can always use petroleum jelly. I learned the hard way and now put it on before every long run whether I need it or not! They usually will have it at any medical tent along the race. Just remember...if it's on a stick from the medical tent, don't eat it!

I have been slowly increasing my distance after getting peroneal tendonitis. I ran the 10k a couple weeks ago and limped along to the finish. My time could have been better. (12:27/mile average) I had to take a few training days off in order to heal, but today was my best run since starting back. 4.66 miles with an average pace of 11:10

I still am hurting and have been adding about a half mile each time I go out. It dawned on me that if I do that... with the 3 times a week I go out, that will put me at 10 miles on the 29th. However, thinking about it... on 9/25, I will be spending the day on a plane...so no running. And on 9/27 I had originally planned a short run (like 3 miles or less) which is probably way better than a 9.5 mile run just two days before the race.

So any advice on how to build up and then not over do it before the race? And..food? Will food on 9/28 matter much since the race is so late on 9/29?

4 weeks from right now I hope to be nearing the finish line!

I hadn't see these, but they're great! While I've already got my costume (Minnie for the 5K/ Zombie Minnie for the 10 miler), I may get one of the Sea Witch shirts just 'cause. So thanks!

I have plans today to do a 9 miler at around 8 or 9 PM to test my food/water/etc before race day. I figured tomorrow being a holiday it would be a good day. But, I can already tell I'm going to try to procrastinate, knowing I can do it tomorrow, or get sucked into a Labor Day weekend party, or end up drinking at my fantasy football draft. Someone give me motivation! :). Really though, just posting it here is probably motivation enough...now I've written it down on a public forum, so it has to happen!

It is such an amazing feeling isn't it? I started Couch to 5K program a couple of years ago and am now training for a marathon. Crazy!

Just wanted to share something I just discovered...Nuun Tablets. I'm sure some of you have tried them but I never had. They are electrolyte tabs you just add to your water but they don't have all the sugar and extra junk some of the other drinks like Gatorade have, which just doesn't sit well in my stomach. These are great. They have a bit of a fizzy taste but they work! I like the strawberry lemonade flavor best.

Not always a bad thing to take an extra day or so off every once in a while. If you keep increasing your mileage and plan on being at 10 miles on the 29th, spending one day off because of a plane and doing a short run or two before the race, you'll be just fine. That will keep you from overdoing it.

As for food, stick with what you know. That's really the best advice I can give. If there's some dish that sounds awesome, but you don't know what it will do, stay away from it. My theory has always been splurge after the race, it's your reward for all the hard training and pain you've endured over the past however many months you've been training.

Thanks! I appreciate the feedback. I guess I just needed to run it by someone else....

Congrats on the 10 miler! That should make the race all that much easier.

At least you know where the chafing is going to be for the race. That way you can make sure to use plenty of bodyglide or whatever you use in those areas

Your pace is really good! I really think if you train up to 8miles, or even 8.5, and give yourself a week to rest you will be fine for the 10miles. With your pace you could even walk the last 2 miles and still beat the pace requirements. I would seriously consider letting your body rest that last week with maybe just a 3mile run a couple days before the race.

My friend and I got the Sea Witch one to wear for the race! They came about 2 weeks ago and are cute!

Which color did you get and how was the fit? I am undecided between the tank and the black v neck...got my 9.5 miles in today, which I think deserves a new shirt reward :)

I also want to do something with glow in the dark features but I'm not certain what products work best on a tech shirt. Please share if you decide to do this and what worked!

:thumbsup2:cool1::cool1::cool1: Thank you, I can do it now!!
I can tell you I have used Glow In The Dark paint for shirts I have made to wear at WDW. I used Wonder Under to iron a design onto the shirt, then painted it with the paint. It glowed bright in the dark rides. I'm not sure how the Wonder Under would work with a Tech nylon shirt, but if the shirt says you can iron it, I think it would work. I decided to not dress up as Sid from TS, which was where I was planning on the Glow In The Dark. (on the skull fabric)

For now, I am considering light up laces or Glow In The Dark laces. I might use the light up laces in my costumes, but I'm still in planning mode for that idea.

Oh and funny story...my mom shared with me yesterday that my legs don't jiggle when I walk anymore. Thanks mom! I wasn't aware that they ever did jiggle but ok.

:rotfl::lovestruc:lovestruc Gotta love moms!!

How often will there be photo ops? Every other mile, opposite the water stations? Or just sporadically throughout the course?

I am doing the trail run in the morning too, any idea how many photo ops are in that one.

Any suggestions on how to carry a small camera, my phone will be on my arm to try and keep me on pace, so I can't use that.

My daughter really wants a Maleficient photo, any odds on her being at the trail run or at the after party?

I ran the Royal Family 5k in Feb and used a Spibelt to hold my camera. I also attached my bib to it with toggle straps. I love the Spibelt! I will be using it again for the camera since my iphone will also be on my arm for my music. I didn't stop for photos since the lines were long (in hindsight, I could have but it was my first run ever and I was scared I would be swept), but I can remember at least 6 stops, probably more. If Maleficient isn't at the Trail Run, I would think she would be at the party.

So I did it today - 10 Miles!!! :cool1: Woo HOO! :cool1:

:cool1::cool1: Good Job!! My 10 mile long run will be this weekend.

I think this sounds like the plan I will do. Just keep getting my distance up and then taking a bit of a break the week of the race. Probably getting one small run in but nothing big.

:thumbsup2
