Official inaugural Tower of Terror 10 miler thread. September 29, 2012

I did my 15k yesterday in 2 hours and 31 minutes yesterday. It was so sticky hot out that it made it hard to breathe and I walked a lot more than I wanted to. Needless to say I will not be submitting my time, but it was good to know that I could *almost* do the 10 mile distance in a race setting.

Does anyone know if there will be lots of TOT merch like the half marathons or not so much like EE? I want to shop till I drop at the expo.

Will everyone be swept at 2:40? Also, can I move down a corral to run with my wife? We kinda want to do this together.

no...the sweepers start after the last person in the last corral crosses the start line. So, the further up you are in the corrals, the more of a cushion you have on the 16 minute minimum pace. I've heard accounts that there is a "balloon lady"...bringing up the rear, maintaining that 16 minute pace...if you see her, just stay in front of her and you should be fine :)

You can move down to a lower corral to run with someone else...you just can't move up a corral.

I would have found that if I had looked back far enough. My daughter and her twelve year old son are from the Humble/Kingwood area and are in Corral B. I'm in C, and my wife is in D. She's the only one that might have a little trouble making the time. Guess she'll have to pace herself.

I understand how serious trying to stay in front of this "balloon lady" can be if you are not wanting to be swept up in the race but that term is just really funny to me. There was this guy last year in the Wine and Dine that was dressed as some grapes, and that is what I am picturing a woman covered in balloons chasing after everyone toward the end.

I experimented the other day with Cliff Roks shots! Chewy yummy tastiness! I've got some sport beans to try tomorrow....

I know, right? :rotfl2: I've not actually seen her before, so I don't know if she carries a whole bunch of them...or if they are labled "sweeper" like those pace team balloons are that I always see? Who knows? I just know she's always called the "balloon lady"...wonder if there's ever been a balloon MAN? I've heard she'll sometimes call out warnings too...letting you know she's there and you have fallen behind pace and give you a chance to pick it up. I don't know for sure though.

You're going to have a great race! So few people are able to even think about completing a distance race, so whether you walk, run (or a little bit of both), it is a huge accomplishment! Especially when you've been persevering despite having such a rough time. I tore my achilles tendon about 6 weeks before the 2008 Disneyland Half and it was an incredibly disappointing and frustrating injury. In the end I was able to run about 4 miles and walked the rest and still finished in just over 3 hours. The medal proves you finished the distance, no matter how you got to the finish line! :cheer2:
You are so right - thank you for giving me a much-needed boost!

I guess I'm officially in a "tapering" mode :) I ran 8 on sunday and from here on out my long weekend runs are 7, 10k, 5, then race day!
:yay: You know I know how miserable those 8 miles probably were - way to get it done!

Awesome! :thumbsup2

:lmao: That's EXACTLY how I kept picturing the "balloon lady" until I saw actual pics of her!

If she's stressing about D, have her make sure she gets into her corral as early as possible and start right in front...it'll at least give her a few minutes on the sweepers!

according to my waiver, i'm in Corral A!!!?!?!? How in the heck did that happen? I submitted my 10K time, but was hoping for B or C......A wasn't even an consideration!! Count me as on who'll be hiding in the back of the corral!! Oh well.....atleast that means shorter lines for the characters right?? LOL

did my 1st Half Marathon last weekend in Indianapolis......7 minutes off my goal, but the humidity was really nasty this weekend. so my time was 2:37 which I am still happy with for my 1st. normally I can keep up a 11:00 mile for a 1/2, but the heat got me....won;'t have to deal with that at Disney.

as for outfits.....I was going to go with a villian, but can't figure anything out. I've got a pink sparkle skirt I am going to wear, but Raw Threads doesn't have anything to match it that Glows in the Dark.

The sports beans work better for me. Smaller.. less to manage in my mouth while I run. PLUS... I have to be careful when I eat a rok shot... a bathroom needs to be near me not to far in the distance. :rotfl:

.

I did my 10k limping... didn't do my best for sure. However, this was the time I was going to submit at the expo. I started to get nervous about how bad it was but after emailing back and forth to disney sports the response I was given was that most likely, my 10k time would move me from D to B. I wonder if D is full of a lot of people who just won't have a time to submit? So I don't know if that helps you... but maybe it kinda gives a picture of how liberal the coral placement might be. After all... my 10k average pace was 12:27

Again, I just have to share... met my goal of doing 5 miles today. (I am trying to add distance every couple of days as my ankle heels) Ankle is still a bit sore (walking down stairs again this evening is a bit of a challenge)... but my pace was 10:50! I really feel like I am heeling. Oh...and all my shoe woes that I had... the 4th pair seems to be great (could use a bit more cushioning in the heel though ) I got a pair of Nike free. I was told at the running store to use my super feet with them... but haven't. I am so afraid that I will hurt myself again. I can tell I am heeling..and since I developed the peroneal tendonitis while wearing the superfeet (and stability shoes) I am a tad nervous to try them in the my new ones. Had them a couple weeks though... and now have broke the 5 mile mark so I figure they are probably good. :cool1:.

This is interesting...I used go wear Saucony Triumphs with super feet in them. Eventually they got to 300 miles I switched over to an Asics Nimbus 14. When I put my super feet in them, my feet HURT, even with just a few miles. However, without the Superfeet, the shoes seem to be perfect. I was worried my knees would hurt, but I did a 9.5 miler in the new shoes with no super feet and was fine. Any ideas why the insoles would seem so different in different shoes?

I was wanting to dress as a villian as well but am not having any luck. I have been thinking of switching it up to wear a superwoman outfit. I have found a few that would be really easy to run in and I figured a Superhero would be needed with all those Villians around :thumbsup2

I would be curious to know too. I would think it has to do with the support in the shoe itself... but

I think I do need some cushion.. maybe just a heel insert? the super feet scare me.

I had the same issue! I wore Asics 2140, 2150 and 2160. When I got the 2160 and put the same brand (new) insoles in my knees started to hurt. I was so scared to take them out since I had worn that brand for years since I had PF. I finally gave it a try and was fine. I ran the 5k in Feb without the insoles.

When I started training seriously for the TOT in March, my shins were bothering me. I took the 2160 and insoles to the running store and they said I don't over pronate anymore and don't need the insoles and could move out of the stability shoe. I asked why and they said that as you heal you may need a different shoe than when you are foot healthy. For me, I don't need the stability shoe anymore and the combo of insole and stability shoe in the 2160 was most likely why my knee was bothering me. Basically too much of a good thing. It all comes down to the shoe and what it does with and without the insole. I'm now in a neutral shoe with custom insoles though to even out my foot and relieve some pain from a slight bunion. So I'm back to insoles, but for a different reason. ;)

My 10k was 63;10 which I didn't think was that great.....good enough to get me out o corrall F but certainly not into corral A! Maybe there just aren't a lot of "elite" runners since it is only 10 miles?

I find that shoe companies make changes to shoes that have worked for me for years. Not sure why they feel the need to do that, but those minor tweaks cause big problems. I had worn Nike (Pegasus and Vomero) for years with progressive discomfort problems, but the last pair caused my toes to jam the toe box (I wore a half size larger than normal and still had this issue!). I have a wonderful manager at our local Running Free store who put me in Mizunos (I have a pair each of Wave Riders and Wave Creations). What a difference - for the first time in ages, my toes are happy! He had to talk me into them because I use the Nike+ system and like the way the shoe pod fits directly in the shoe, but I'm so glad he did! :cool1:

I suspect I don't overpronate (badly) as what the running store first thought I did. (my edema from going off my insulin regulating drugs was BAD) So once the edema was gone, I think my feet were "healed" so I didn't need the high stability that they thought I did.

See, so your time was quite a bit better than mine. If the person from disney sports is correct and I get moved to B with a time of 77 minutes (and some seconds..don't know off hand what I finished with...just noted my average pace) then you being done in 14 minutes certainly should put you in a higher corral. (or at least I would think) I think I saw the elite bibs were only the first 20...

My dh just bought some mizuno wave riders!

Shoes kinda fascinate me. what works for one person doesn't necessarily work for another...
