Official 2011 Wine & Dine Half and Relay Thread

got back to training today......did an hour on the treadmill.....25 minute run, 5 minute walk, 25 minute run, 5 minute walk. what amazed me so much, rather annoyingly, was that my pace today was 11 minute mile.....which was my average for the disasterous 5k last weekend, which i finished in 34:56. when i started my 2nd running session, I was barely a 2 miles!! it seemed like i was slower, despite running the whole time. obviously i need to work on pacing myself better during the big events.

Your pace on a treadmill will only be what speed the treadmill is set on. What is you running speed? what is your walking speed?

BTW a 34:56 5K isn't "disasterous."

I think what SO many runners are not aware of is the ease of walking because there is almost no harsh impact on the body that you get from running or jogging. I walked with DW at Disneyland last week and finished with a 3:36:55 and Yes I wore the C2C Medal and the 1/2 Medal with pride.

Today I got out and WALKED a 13.12 miler here in El Paso in a time of 2:19:47 which is 13 minutes slower than my best to date. Just saying that with all the hype about RUNNING I think many people are missing out on faster times with fewer injuries by walking.

Walking fast is a great workout, and sure is fun when you pass all those runners.

Good luck to all in a few weeks.

BTW, I will miss anchoring this year's W&D Relay with DW like last year but our DD will take over the 4.8 and DW will be doing the 8.3. At least one of us will be eligible for a Legacy status in the future if there is one.

Walking 13.12 miles in 2:19:47 is...... impressive. But are you sure you weren't flying some of that? 2:19:47 would be me running almost the entire distance.

Thank you for the compliment and I do not fly at any point of my stride. By using Danny Dreyer's Chi Walking Method and my background in bicycling, I have been able to perfect my walking form.

Actually, I had originally planned a simple Tempo walk but after my first 5K was under 30 minutes I kept it up to where the last 1.06 mile of my 10K took 9:22 for a 8:15mm pace completing it in under 60 minutes. After that I resorted back to a 11:00-11:30 Tempo to finish out.

My strength in walking comes from the fast twitch muscles and higher cardio-respiratory output resulting from years of 100+mile bicycle rides using lower gears with higher cadence. I do not strength train but will soon begin a training routine in swimming for a planned May 2012 WDW 70.3 Ironman. Looking forward to wearing the Gold cap for the swim.

Wow.... just... Wow! You are my hero! :worship:

I'm a walker as well, and would love to start incorporating more racewalk technique...hoping to add that into my training for the Princess. Last time around (2006 Half), I was able to complete the half in 3:10... this time around for the W&D, (late start with training and hadn't walked, practically, since that last race), I'll be lucky to avoid the sweepers.

I do not racewalk as does windwalker, Dave. I speedwalk since I can not tolerate a heel plant in my stride. I midsole strike. I found that racewalking actually slowed my forward progress because it felt like putting on the brakes everytime I planted. The midsole allows a smoother glide into the next step.

When we pick up our packets at the expo, will they change out our shirt if it is the wrong size?

I'll be running with happy feet; my 2 sons, who are away at college, will be joining my DH at the Finish Line Party! It will be great to all be together for a little while.

I am amazed and intrigued. I would love to talk about this. Hopefully we will meet during the weekend.

I ride as well - a lot. I really enjoy walking. I hate running. I run/walk just for the time. And because it gives me more burn for the same amount of time. But for me.. running equals nagging injuries. I really don't understand how you mechanically walk that fast... Again.. I'm intrigued!

Finished my race day outfit this weekend! I will not be able to make the meet since we do not get in until late friday night, so if anyone recognizes me at the race or afterparty please say hello...this is what I'll be wearing: (the pic on the right is what is on the back of my shirt) I'll also have a clip in my hair that has strands of pink LED lights attached to it!

Until I read about Chi Walking by Danny Dreyer, I wasn't able to focus on the mechanics involved. Unlike many, I do not stand upright rather lean into the movement. This causes one to bring feet forward to prevent a face plant. Instead of lifting the trailing foot high in the air I simply take if forward using less energy thus applying the lift energy to forward motion. Almost like rapid shuffling than really walking but the result is a very smooth motion with virtually no bounce. Think walking at a 10:00mm pace with water in a dish on your head and no spillage occurring.

Afraid I am not making this year's W&D because I am watching 2 DGS's while DS and DDIL are both away taking care of Army duty. I was really looking forward to improving on my 9:36mm pace for last year's 8.3 in the relay.

Glad to read that you are a biker. I think many overlook the true advantages that bicycling can bring to walking, jogging or running faster. Be glad to answer any questions, just PM me.

I love the top!

I'll be wearing my pink sparkle skirt and depending on how hot it is I'm hoping it will be comfortable enough for me to wear my pink compression socks too! But just a basic white running tank to top it all off.

I just got my WISH shirt, so it will be a first for me. I'm wearing Minnie ears for 5k, but don't think I can do it for the 1/2

Jennifer

This is a good realization. You shouldn't add anything to the half that you haven't practiced with. (ie wearing the headband style ears) You can handle most anything for the 5K or carry it as it is not a chip timed event, but after a while it could get tedious/cumbersome over 13.1 miles.

And anything you discard will be donated to local charities (similar to the Salvation Army) to sell in their consignment shops. So please don't think, I can take it off and come back for it later. It won't be there. And with the exception of along the Boardwalk and Yacht and Beach Clubs, there won't be spectators (your friends/family) to take it from you.

Thanks guys! I'm hoping some of you will happen to see me on the course, pre or post race and say hello since I won't be able to make the meet up that's been talked about on Friday.

Everyone is all so friendly and supportive of each other on this thread! It really... like literally... brings a tear to my eye. Running always seems like such a solo thing (which doesn't bother me when I am actually running cause it's not like I can have big conversations or social time), but the community of running peeps really strikes me as a nice bunch. Plus we are all Disney crazed, which probably helps. :)

Summer - LOVE your outfit, and the note about the cupcakes. So true.

John - I second Sam. I am having a hard time picturing a body move that fast and yet still be walking. I don't doubt you at all - just intriqued. Especially since when I picture myself attempting that, I really WOULD face plant. Or maybe hyper extend a knee. It wouldn't be pretty.

Run2Relax - So cool that your family will be there at the finish line!

All - regarding the MEET, I really think DTD on Friday at 5 PM is smart. I reiterate that the plaza/amphatheater just outside World of Disney is a good place. I also re-bring up the idea of a short group run after for those that might be interested. I would be down.

Also, regarding CLOTHES, I think it would be fun to follow Summer's lead and post our outfits. Maybe even us wearing them. With 71 pages and so many posters, I feel a little bit bad to admit that I am having troubles telling everyone apart. Maybe if we post a current pic in running gear with our real names - this close to the race especially - I might actually have a prayer of recognizing some of you at the event and tackling you with a group hug prior to the starting line!
