Official 2011 Wine & Dine Half and Relay Thread

Congratulations on your triathlon finish. We already have site reservations at FW for the 70.3 in May, 2012. Figured I might as well make my first attempt at a triathlon a 1/2 since my first marathon was the finale of a Dopey Weekend this January.

I have been looking at that race too. I have the distance on the bike and run. I can do a reverse brick. But once I get off the bike, over 20 miles.... I can't run. I haven't tried it lately though. I think I will try another actual brick soon.

The swim is another matter. I am having my shoulder reconstructed October 20th... I will have to see how the rehab goes.. which will be a lot of swimming.. before I sign up.

Oh my, how this thread has grown since I last checked in. I hope everyone's training is going well.

A couple weeks ago I finished my first half ironman race which I am super thrilled about but haven't done diddly squat since then bc I was so burned out from all the training. I was really hoping for a personal record at this race but I dont think that's going to happen. :(

I'd love to see what everyone is wearing for the race. I don't have mine finalized yet so I'm going ot hold out on the surprise. One recomendation if you dont' know it already; nothing new on race day so train in the outfit before the race. I made this mistake once and paid dearly.

I meant to add my congratulations as well. GREAT JOB!! Impressive. Which half was it?

The heat and humidity killed me and defiantly effected my time. I was 3 minutes slower than a race 3 weeks prior and I was still a little sick for that one. I spoke with the overall female winner and she was about 3 minutes slower too.

It probably wouldn't have been as bad if it hadn't already started to get cooler up here so it wasn't such a swing. I prefer to run halves in the low to mid 40's and according to the web it was 82 (but felt like 88) and the humidity was 74%.

In Jacksonville, FL the temperatures have fallen to the low 80's to high 70's (pleasant) with a drop in humidity (the late evenings to about 6am are the worse here) at 10pm and my son in Orlando says it's been about the same. This pretty typical for this time of year until November.

To stay acclimated for the FL weather, try to do some of your training at the most humid and warmest part of your day. Not only for the 1/2, but the days at Disney are still HOT and will drain you if you aren't used to it.

Kind of the same here. I was about 3.5 minutes off my PR. I don't think it was as bad as it could have been, but bad enough. I agree with Frank, it doesn't help that it starts getting coolers here before we go down there to race.

It's a good thing I wasn't planning to PR on Oct 1. I haven't run since a 6.5 mile tempo a week ago (Sept 8).

I missed a 10 mile race this past Sunday. I started feeling sick on Friday and when I woke up on Sunday, the room was spinning. Then came the cough. One doctor's visit and a chest x-ray later, I have bronchitis (thank goodness not pneumonia, which I had 2 years ago). I'm supposed to give myself "lung rest" until Monday. :(

So I have missed a whole week of training and I have to resist the temptation to "make up for lost time" when I'm well enough to run again.

I plan to wear my usual race day garb on Oct 1 - fave pink shirt and my cw-x shorts. :)

Right shoulder problems here. Bike crash April 2, C6 and clavicle fracture, compression and slippage of C5, C6 and C7, LTN, still have numbness and tingling. Will have shoulder worked on when back in Fl. next month. Dr. says rotation with return and constant cracking and pain will be no more so can build up strength.. Only concern is swim but plenty of time to work at it.

Good luck with surgery.

yeah I am from central Florida and it is brutal running here. I try and run in the mornings, which is usually in the 80's but sometimes I have to run in the afternoons and temps are always above 90! Most of the time between 95-100! Humidity is killer here...I hope my running times will be faster when it cools down here!

How does the relay exchange work? Do we end at the same point the second leg starts? My partner wants to use my phone because of my runkeeper app.......so I need to get it to her at the exchange. Will that work?

Thanks for all the feedback about the temp! Here's hoping some of the humid training walks from this summer have 'stayed' with me, since it is FREEZING here now. My regular training time is after 9:30pm bcs of work/kids, so that works well for the race time but not so much for trying to get the warmer part of the day.

Trying not to worry... and hoping for that 'race adrenaline' effect. :goodvibes

I think it will. I believe they hold the second leg until the first gets there. The relay people ran off to the side at animal kingdom lst year.. so I didn't actually see the exchange.

Thanks! My right shoulder too. Torn rotator... old injury. Recently torn again until I have trouble even feeding myself now. I pushed back surgery until after the wine and dine... But with hopefully enough time to get ready again for the January half and full.

But are you telling me you aren't able to swim yet.. but are already signed up for the half tri? I thought I was the only one who did things like that.. :)

The weather in Atlanta has been cool. Cold front came yesterday. Hopefully my training from the summer with the heat, humidity stayed with me. Its not normal to be like this in Atlanta this time of the year. At least not now. The hills really give me the endurance that i need but every time i see a hill, i tend to play mind games and want to stop.

So what time friday night at dtd?

I can move in the water but no speed right now because of limited rotation and plenty of pain. We have reservations at FW for the Tri Weekend and waiting for the entry info to be posted. When I get back home to Fl. in 4 weeks we will join our county pool so DW who used to be a lifeguard can get me swimming. I will sign up as soon as the race is posted since the 56 miles and 13.1 miles are no problem. Because I am 61, I think I will be going off in the 4th wave so have plenty of time to get the job done.

Yes, the 1st runner will meet the 2nd runner...there is even a flashlight 'baton' that can be transferred (you get it in your bag at the expo) so handing off a phone will be no issue.

DW and I decided to exchange a kiss :lovestruc instead of the flashlight last year.

we both get a baton, so i know we don't have to actually "hand off" so i wasn't sure if we were even in the same area......good to know we'll actually see each other.

did 6 miles today for the 1st time......i feel so weird being happy for 6 when you guys are all hitting 12 and 13. :rotfl: but man oh man......i'm sore!! didn't think 6 would be so much harder than 5!

Hi everyone, just checking in! Hope everyone is doing well.

I did absolutely NOTHING this week except on Monday, I ran/walked 4 miles. I have to take it easy because my knee cap is loose among other things.... it was quite a surprise when the ortho asked me if I liked running and suggested a different sport :(

I plan on doing a long run this weekend, even if I have to walk it....

You should listen to your Dr. because he has your health in mind. I told my Ortho I was going to run a marathon and he told me he really didn't want me to run so instead I took up walking.

DW and I walked the DL 1/2 two Sunday's ago and this week I walked 13.12 miles in 2:20 on Mon., 10.01 miles in 1:45 on Wed. and 15.28 miles in 2:45 today. I have bad knees and can not run a hundred yards without issues so walking is the way I go. I might not be as fast as runners but the miles melt away without issues.

I am happy being a WALKER because I would never make it as a runner.

Good luck this weekend.

You definitely meet up with your partner at the relay exchange point and go a (very short) distance together before the partner turns off to get their medal and you turn off to continue the race.

Saw the medals today at the philly expo and they are awesome ;) I think I liked the lanyard more last year with the vines on it, but having spaceship earth pieces on the lanyard matches the medal better. And the medal for the 1/2 is HUGE. I like that the relay is the same design, only slightly smaller, but you definitely feel like you earned the bling when you're done! But I couldn't believe how big the 1/2 medal was!
