Official 2011 Wine & Dine Half and Relay Thread

Saw you are from Dallas ChloroFiend :) Do you do any local races?

I've done a few...mostly 5Ks:
  • 2010 Red Nose Run (Dallas)
  • 2010 Arbor Day Run (Plano)
  • 2010 Turkey Trot 5K (Dallas)
  • 2011 Wounded Warrior 10K (Las Colinas)
  • 2011 Warrior Dash

Pondering doing another Warrior Dash style run called The Survival Race in early december and the Tough Mudder in April. DFW Mud run is late October too. Probably run the Turkey Trot again (if we're in town) but might shoot for the 8-miler. My buddy just signed up for the Dallas 13.1 in late October. Not sure what else is on the docket; I still refuse to call myself a 'runner', so I prefer the 'adventure' style races. ;)

I have used BioFreeze. Love it! Three weeks before my first full marathon I pulled a hamstring. BioFreeze worked well during the race.

Do you use it before you run? During? After? I am gurious. Does it work differently than compression socks?

Congrats on the DL 1/2! Very exciting! The W&D is my first. I was slow before but am even slower now that I have this knee thing...problem undiagnosed until after 10/1...:rolleyes1

I am thinking of trying C2C for next year, but want to get my intervals higher before I commit to that. I want to be a better runner. It will be the next "goal" How long have you been running??

I use it during the race as needed. The medical tents sometimes have it but you can also get packets to carry with you. I've never used compression socks so I can't say how they compare. I also have used it after a race if I have any soreness that is bugging me.

I started doing 1/2's in 2008 as a walker. This was my first race where I jogged about 1/2 the race. Before that I would mostly walk w/a little jogging here and there.

I hope your knee feels better soon!

question!!!

they posted the pics from the 5K this weekend in Indianapolis, and they have a picture of me......with no feet on the ground. :confused3 I told my husband i must be doing something wrong, and he said NO, that when you run, there are times when you have both feet in the air. I told him that should be physically impossible for a 13 mile race!! I'm pretty sure I didn't hop/jump thru the race, so what gives with the no feet on the ground picture?

technically I think the definition of running is having both feet off the ground at some point while the definition of walking is that at least one foot is on the ground at all times....or something like that...?? Someone else have any insight?

Running does require both feet to be off the ground during the stride. Seems that there is also a pace requirement of 8 minutes per mile and below to be considered truly running by some. Slower than 8m/m would be categorized as jogging.

I have done a couple of those races. I was supposed to do the Warrior Dash but chickened out at the last minute. Something about having to run through barbedwire didn't excite me, hahaha! A friend of mine did it and he had a blast.

I was looking at the Dallas 13.1 - at least the weather should be nice by then. Just not sure I will be up for another half so quick!

Dagny -
Congrats! We are very similar in our times! I did 11 (I think) this past Sunday night. I took abour 2.5 hours... All of these thinks are because RunKeeper quit in the middle...and now I can't get it to work at all. I am getting nervous, but nervous excited. How about you? Where are you staying again?

OregonGirl - Hi Carey! Hope all is going well. It sounds like you are more than ready for this race. It has been busy the last few weeks with school starting and all of the kids stuff restarting, so I haven't had much time. I was able to get out and do 11 this past weekend, but have been having knee issues. I am a little worried, but am going to put off the doctor until after the race. The back inside of my right knee is bothering me a bit after I start every run on the forward swing and planting of my foot, but am hoping to get through the race. It still hasn't cooled down any here, so it is still hard to run. Hopefully it will start to cool off soon. Where are you staying again? I am at POFQ. We definitely need to meet up before the race!

On a separate note,

Are any of you vets familiar with BioFreeze? Do you use it?

Have a great one!
25 days?? Really??? :scared1::banana::yay:

Michele

Hey Michele: I am VERY nervous to say the least. Excited too, but mostly nervous. We are arriving on 9/29 and staying at AKL for three nights. Then to the Boardwalk for 4 nights. I see that you are at POFQ - love it there!

You know what is funny. I am having a knee issue as well. Yours is the right knee, mine is the left knee. Knee has just been feeling "weird" so when I ran the 9 miles, I used a knee brace, and now the back of my knee hurts. At first I thought it might have been a chaffing issue but it definitely not that so I have that going for me as well. I am going to try to run without the brace tonight. I am also trying to hold out until AFTER the race to go see a doctor, which I realize is probably really stupid.

What number are you? Perhaps we are in the same corral. Worse case scenario, we can tie our bad knees together and do a "potato sack race" motion for the remainder of the race, ;)

All:

It appears that everyone is interested in getting together to meet one another. Should we try to put something formal in place before the race - maybe at the Expo or on Friday night?

I know some people are doing Mickeys Not So Scary Halloween Party Friday night so maybe we could meet up at the Tambu Lounge which is right outside Ohanas at the Polynesian before the party starts?

Just a thought... :goodvibes

Dagny:

I would love to get together. I am driving up Friday and going to the Expo then heading over to Epcot for the afternoon/night. I will miss the Tambu Lounge Friday if that is what everyone decides on, but would definitely like to meet at some point.

I am skipping MNSSHP Friday night just because I am afraid it might affect my race. I don't know if I could handle that. My time is slow to begin with.:rotfl2:

Regul8ter18 - Where is kaj1436 staying? Isn't it there?? Can't remember.

Looking forward to it!

Michele

I am still looking for a place to stay at. Where you guys decided to all meet up at before the race?

I'm staying at Pop is anyone needs a ride..i'm driving to epcot and taking the shuttle to the start.

Running a half marathon on the 18th in preparation for this one...getting very nervous..at least i'm not alone for this one....

I am open to any and all suggestions for a time and place to get together - If a theme park meet works better for everyone, then it works for me. I know it will be impossible for everyone to get together but if there is a consensus ..... ;)

i would love to meet with everyone, since i don't know anyone else running, and my relay partner will be at AK before the race. but my family won't go for anything that takes away from park touring. :rotfl: i'm trying to figure out how to squeeze in the quick trip to the expo to get my packet before we head to Blizzard Beach on Saturday!

If anyone staying at All Star Sports, or any of the All Star resorts, wants to meet for dinner and ride the bus to WWOS together, i'm up for that.

For anyone that did this race last year, did they give a mesh drawstring backpack as the goody bag at the expo...like the one we got at the Princess?

I am staying at the Dolphin with my sister who is also running the race. We're coming up Friday and plan to hit the Expo Friday night, because my DD is running the Kids Race Saturday AM, so we want to get all the packets on Friday. I'm down for a meet-up, but as far as suggestions, I kinda suck at that. ;)
