Official 2011 Wine & Dine Half and Relay Thread

I just bought these shoes 4 months ago, so I can't imagine I've worn them out yet.

Truth be told, there's a good chance you likely have. The average pair of running shoes on the average runner will last 3-400 miles. If you have a heavy foot fall, run on hard-paved surfaces, or are a heavier person, the effective life will decrease.

I'm at 180 miles on my current pair and contemplating breaking in a new set before the race.

On that note, please, please, PLEASE make sure that if you get a new pair of kicks, that they're adequately broken in before race day. Blisters are no fun. :)

Has anyone been mid afternoon? Is it fairly busy? Will I miss anything not going when it first opens?

Thanks :)

While we haven't been to the expo for W&D, we've normally done the Marathon Weekend expo mid afternoon. It's busy, but not what I'd call slammed. Never seen any special events/flavor like the Fairy Godmother. About the only thing you might miss on is sale/discounted items in limited quantities.

I returned to running about 9 months ago after a 20 year hiatus due to injuries and health issues. In March, I ran the Gate River Run 15k in Jacksonville FL. I've always wanted to run a 1/2 marathon, but not alone. When I registered for this one, I was tagging along behind two other people, but now am running it alone and am a little nervous. This board has been so helpful in reducing some of my anxiety. I run best later in the day but the coolest time of the day in FL is between 5-7am. I'm hoping the Imodium will take care of the Runner's Trots issue. DH bought me the multi- symptom package.

From what I've read, we will receive our corral placement on our bib when we pick up our packet.

I've just switched to Asics GT 2160 shoes. I've had foot surgery and the pain in my foot would stop me around 7-9 miles. These have the most cushion in the forefoot that I've found.

Being signed up for this run is the best way every to make your Disney trip not feel like to takes forevvvveeerrr to actually arrive. This time I actually wish I had a couple more weeks.

As for my training, I was in Nashville last week and did a 5.75 and 8.5 mile run. Call me crazy but I loved the hills don't get many of those in Miami, average times were between 10:30-11 mins/mile.

I'm planning on one more long run 9.5 and a 4-5 6 milers before the main event. Am I crazy not going over 10 miles at least once before the race?!?!?

29apr00 - you can do it! I started in spring this year and ran my first half yeserday :cheer2: Are you planning at least 1 long run before the race?

if I am able to squeeze in the time between class, work, kids school schedules, and leading my daughter's girl scout troop, i will only be able to run the weekend of the 16th, and I'd probably only get 5 miles in. but the 1st half of the relay only has to run 4.8 so i think i'm good. I can get 5-1/2 to 6 miles in on the treadmill more often.

Hey there everyone. Hope you all had a great holiday weekend. I appreciate the continued encouragement and support - it definitely keeps me going :)

I got in 8.9 miles today (yay!), averaged 14 minutes 14 seconds per mile so I feel pretty good about that all things considered. I am pretty sure that I won't be able to walk tomorrow, but feel a little better about my ability to at least finish the half next month.

I really started enjoying my run around mile 3-4 and then by mile 7, I couldn't wait for it to be over. My right foot started getting numb and my left hip started to REALLY bother me.

Enjoy the week :)

Looking forward to the Wine & Dine Half. It'll be my last half-marathon until May 2012. Because I live in the cold, cold, cold Canadian Prairies, there is only one half-marathon between Sept/Oct 2011 and May 2012 and I don't do winter races anymore.

That being said, my longest training run for this will be 10 miles (and I have a 10 mile race this Sunday too). I know I'll finish in the allowed time and I am definitely NOT going for a PR - I plan to stop and take lots of pictures! :banana:

For the Princess Half I went to the expo first thing in the morning, there was a line up and it seemed pretty busy but I saw the Fairy Godmother open the expo and got pixie dust on us, DD thought that was cool.

For the Wine & Dine I wanted to go o DHS first, LOL....go rope drop to ride Toy Store, Rock & Roll RollerCoaster and Tower of Terror :rolleyes1 and then thinking of going to the Expo mid afternoon. Has anyone been mid afternoon? Is it fairly busy? Will I miss anything not going when it first opens?

Thanks :)

I would recommend you follow your plan. Unless runDisney pulls something unexpected out of their hat, there won't be anything special. Going a little later will not only let the commando 'I NEED to have my bib NOW' runners (I admit, I want mine as soon at I hit property...) get theirs as well as let the volunteers get accustomed to what they need to do and be more efficient in getting you all you need for the race.

Dagny, you're rockin'!!!! :cool1::cool1::cool1:

I got back very early Monday morning from running the DL ½. Thank goodness WDW has the WWoS for the expo.:thumbsup2

If you ever get the chance to do the Coast to Coast Challenge, I would highly recommend it. Just be careful when they place the C2C medal around your neck--you very well may topple over.:goodvibes

Twenty-five days WISHers!!! 25 Days!!!:dance3::dance3:

I'm back from the DL half (nice and sore!) and looking forward to the Wine & Dine! I will say though that around mile 11 of the DL Half I was thinking "OMG. I have to do this again in only 26 days???" DL ended up being tougher than I thought, but I was only 2 minutes slower than my time at the Princess and I thought I was going to do alot worse than that, so I'm pleased. BF PR'd...again! Wine & Dine will be more of a fun run for me and my BF...we're running together and plan to stop for as many pics as we can. I'm worried about it being a night race though...I'm not much of a night person, so I don't know how I'm going to react. Hopefully all the extra breaks for pics will help me out some.

Great job to all who did the DL 1/2 this past weekend! It was a great race this year and the weather was perfect! With that race behind us, I'm getting so excited about the Wine & Dine 1/2! This is my first time doing the W&D and my first night race as well. Does anyone know how big this race is? DL had 15,000 registered runners. Is this one similar?

Thanks Todd. I am feeling a little better about it. Now if only I could take the treadmill with me so that I could monitor my pace that would be AWESOME.

CONGRATS on the C2C Medal :) I plan on going for my Coast to Coast next year :) That is if I don't fall apart first. ;)

They will most likely have pacers running amongst the rest of us. They are seasoned runners who can keep a certain pace over the course of the race. They carry a stick with balloons (or have them tied to their belt) with the finish time they are pacing written on them.

Wow, great to know. That will definitely help :)

Did they have these people last year? I don't recall seeing them, but it was my first half and I was admittedly a bit overwhelmed. :)

I am fairly certain they did. However, my memory could be inventing them....:scratchin:scratchin:confused:

Dagny -
Congrats! We are very similar in our times! I did 11 (I think) this past Sunday night. I took abour 2.5 hours... All of these thinks are because RunKeeper quit in the middle...and now I can't get it to work at all. I am getting nervous, but nervous excited. How about you? Where are you staying again?

OregonGirl - Hi Carey! Hope all is going well. It sounds like you are more than ready for this race. It has been busy the last few weeks with school starting and all of the kids stuff restarting, so I haven't had much time. I was able to get out and do 11 this past weekend, but have been having knee issues. I am a little worried, but am going to put off the doctor until after the race. The back inside of my right knee is bothering me a bit after I start every run on the forward swing and planting of my foot, but am hoping to get through the race. It still hasn't cooled down any here, so it is still hard to run. Hopefully it will start to cool off soon. Where are you staying again? I am at POFQ. We definitely need to meet up before the race!

On a separate note,

Are any of you vets familiar with BioFreeze? Do you use it?

Have a great one!
25 days?? Really??? :scared1::banana::yay:

Finished my 2nd run of 10 miles last Sunday morning. Felt like crap the rest of the day as well as Monday. I may try to take 2 advils as recommended by some fellow runners here. Took GU energy pouch after the first 5 miles, then felt fine for the next 2 -3 miles after the GU. The bottom of my foot cramped up and didn't feel too well. I had to ice that foot up along with lots of rest the next day. Hopefuly this dosnt happen again when i run 3 miles this wed. Anyone from Atlanta area running this 1/2? This is my first 1/2 marathon and just excited that its disney. I have been running the Peachtree 10k for 4 years and never thought of doing a 1/2 marathon. Just wondering, i want to do the c2c but this wine and dine i think is the last 1/2 marathon for this year. So is it next year i have to start all over again? I just bought a pair of nike structured 14 which is recommended by a running shoe store called Big Peach. Hope to meet you guys on race day. I am nervous by the way. Very grateful that this board existed.

OregonGirl & ChloroFiend: I'm #3170 with an 11:18 min/mile proof of time from a 15K. My dream is to finish in 2:15, but will be okay with a sub 2:30 for my 1st 1/2.

Dagny: You are doing great, but it is hard to not discouraged when the body doesn't cooperate. I'm not an expert, but your shoes may be cause of your foot & hip pain. You may need something with a little wider toe box and cushion as you increase the distance. I was experiencing the same foot issues when I ran past 7 miles. I now have a pair I like for my treadmill workouts, one for 10k or less runs, and one for distance. Although until the 1/2, I'm wearing the later for all runs.

Helloooo everyone! It's so nice to read everyone's updates! Glad to hear most of yall are doing well and sticking with the training.

I was bad last week and didn't run at all after my 9 mile run last Sunday. I finally had time to do a 3 mile run yesterday. It actually got cooler here this weekend! By cool, I mean the high was 90 rather than 102. I'm so excited cause if it stays like this it means I can run at 6pm rather than 8pm on workdays. I might even be able to begin my long runs at 8am instead of 6am! I'm hoping the cool weather lasts through the weekend.

I wanted to mention to those of you who are talking about taking Advil prior to running, I noticed in the W&D race packet pdf this info:

"Recent medical research has shown that non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) like Advil, Motrin, Aleve, ibuprofen, aspirin, naproxen, etc. may be harmful to runners' kidney function if taken within 24 hours of running. Only acetaminophen (Tylenol) has been shown to be safe. NSAIDs are thought to increase the possibility of hyponatremia while running long distances by decreasing blood flow to the kidneys and interfering with a hormone that helps the body retain salt.

Therefore it is recommended that on race day (specifically beginning midnight before you run) you DO NOT use anything but acetaminophen (Tylenol) if needed until 6 hours after you have finished the race, are able to drink without any nausea or vomiting, have urinated once, and feel physically and mentally back to normal. Then, an NSAID would be beneficial in preventing post-event muscle soreness."

I kind of thought that stunk because I at least like to take advil right after a long run because I usually get a bad headache, but it says to wait 6 hours!

I can't believe it's just 25 more days!! Ahhhh!!!!! Good luck everyone and see ya real soon!

In order to obtain the Coast to Coast medal, you have to complete a race (of at least ½ marathon length) in both Walt Disney World and Disneyland in the same calendar year. So yes, unfortunately this will mean you need to start all over. But the Disneyland half was a great race!!!
