Hi! I am about to launch back into a no refined carb diet and I am hoping there are others on this board doing similar diets looking for support. I have been successful with this style of eating in the past, and I also know that the first week will be the most painful! I find that once passed the first few days of depriation, I can live happily with out sugar, flour, white potatoes and rice and such rather happily.

A little about me: I am 33 and I have yo-yoed my way to being heavier than I am willing to claim. I am determined to lose weight and gain better health for the long term, but with my first week long WDW trip in June 2012 as extra motivation.

Who's with me? Anyone else looking for a support community?

What you're talking about is not much different than the Primal diet I am on! I don't really eat any processed or refined foods but do eat plenty of carbs in fruits and veggies and stuff.

I've been doing this for about a year and feel better than I ever have. I turn 35 (ugh) tomorrow and have lost 70 lbs this year. My goal is to get in the "normal" BMI range which is about 15lbs more that I need to lose.

What are your typical stumbling blocks when you try to make this change? Also, what do you think motivates you? And what can we do to help? :)

Wow Liloh, good for you! Did you make mostly dietary changes, or did you add an exercise practice as well?

Personally, I have so much to lose (nearly 200 lbs) that I can easily get bogged down in how overwhelming the challange will be, and how long it will take. Also I am the cook in my home, and I know that this mode of eating can be a lot of work, so I know I need to start planning. This time around I have a LOT of great reasons to stay motivated. I am a full time student looking to start a career, DH and I want to start a family, I want to live a good long healthy life and I want to have the most comfortable summer trip to WDW possible.

What I am looking for here is a community of people striving to be their best. People to check in with and celebrate with. Is these somewhere else you could point me? Is the W.I.S.H journal space the best place? :confused3

:welcome: MrsGumdrop! an alaskan cruise....ahhh....sounds soooo heavenly!

i have read this posting like three times now, i need to reply. i really am a carb addict and i have found myself in a place where it's become critical that i cut back on the carbs. i've been having some health problems since last summer, i won't bore you all with the details but the bottom line is my body is producing too much of the chemical that is more or less a body's natural steroid. i look like i'm on steroids, or so i've been told :teeth: my understanding of this complex issue is that my body is wrongly breaking down protein into sugar. so not only breaking down carbs into sugar, but protein as well. and when the protein runs dry it searchs more out and breaks down muscle. lovely, huh. you can only imagine this process makes a person gain weight, which i have. i don't know at this point if i'll be able to lose weight....but i'm in a vigorous pursuit of a confirmed diagnosis...it's just a really hard one to confirm. or so i keep being told. until then, i figure i can start to reprogram my eating habits and use what i've learned to my advantage. i really don't want to gain any more weight during this whole ordeal.

but i'm a sugar addict......waaahhhhh!!!!.....it will be really hard to give up sugar...

I am really looking forward to it! This trip is a gift from my DSIL, so I am Extra lucky!

ohMom, I am sorry you have to deal with this illness. I hope you get the confirmation you are looking for very soon. Personally, I have never been successful at cuttung back on sweets, I crave them too much! I know this suggestion might sound unthinkable, but have you considered going cold-turkey? I have found that I still want things emotionally, buT I don't get the physical cravings after a week or so. What do your doctors suggest?

Thank you Pjlla!

I gave up sugar about a year ago and going cold turkey really worked for me. I adjusted to it faster than I expected and now don't even like sugary stuff anymore.
The first week is the hardest but after that you won't miss it anymore. You can do it!! :)

I really started with my sugar free, flour free dinner last night, but today is my first full day with my this eating plan. In seven days I will be home free! Or at least craving free. :goodvibes Count down with me.

Boy was I excited to find this thread!! I am on a Paleo type diet called "Primal Blueprint"-so simple carbs are out for me. It is hard at first but then you start to feel so much better and you get hooked on the lifestyle. But, this being the Passover season and me having celiac's disease, all of the grocery stores now have wonderful gluten free baked goods in stock. It is hard to resist. I currently have 2 packages of gluten free cookies in my kitchen. I bought them yesterday, came home and had some, and hated them. Since going Paleo my taste buds have totally changed:thumbsup2. But, now I am battling the guilt of throwing food away (a definite extension of the clean plate club).
Anyway, I am so glad to have found this thread. Good luck to everyone trying to go simple carb free!

Good luck Mrs. Gumdrop! You can do this!!!!!:cheer2:

Thank you Alice! I am glad to hear that you have found the Paleo diet rewarding. I am staying strong knowing that once the week is over, I will feel so much better!

To be honest, yesterday was my first day on plan, and I felt like I as starving! I am just so glad this feeling doesn't last, or I would never make it.

Have any of you tried a quinoa pasta that you liked? In general I don't eat many "swap" products, but I would live to be able to have small serving of pasta that is on plan.

I don't eat Quinoa at all. I have celiacs disease and it is gluten free. But, most quinoa is processed in wheat plants. I have had terrible reactions to quinoa because of that. Also, I no longer eat grains in general. If I want something carby like that I eat an occasional potato or lima beans (which truth be told, I like a lot better than any grains).

Not sure which plan you are doing but if you are starving try adding a little more fat to your diet. Even just a tablespoon of butter on veggies will help the hunger go away and not add many calories. Good luck getting through today. 2nd day is always better :)

Goodness! I didn't realize just how limiting gluten intolerance is.

I am doing no sugar, no flour, no white or processed foods. So brown rice quinoa or yams are on plan.

Veggies! You mentioned veggies and that is exactly what I was missing yesterday. If I had eatten more leaf greens, I am sure I wouldn't have suffered so much yesterday, so that is what I am going to do today.

It sounds pretty dumb now that I am thinking about it, but other than grocery shopping, I really didn't plan what I would be eating. Which is why I was left hungry yesterday.*I didn't do the need prep work before getting started.

Thanks for the inspiration! Sometimes I am be a Pooh of little brain..

That is the hardest part for me as well. Planning everything from organizing the grocery list, coupons, shopping, and cooking...all of that can really overwhelms me. But, it does seem to be the only way to really have success.
I hope today is much easier for you! Good luck!!

Hi everyone. I just wanted to post to let you guys know that your diets sound really healthy and good. It is hard to give up your favorites, but it's so worth it. I couldn't do the paleo or primal thing because I'm a vegetarian, and it's hard enough to get my protein now. Take away my dairy and it just wouldn't work! ;) I am doing a clean eating plan that also calls for no sugar. I am not having any white carbs at all, and it is tough.

As far as gluten free, I certainly do feel for you. I thought my son may have celiac for awhile (lots of stomach problems and I have Hashimotos thryoiditis, which increases his chances for celiac disease), but it turned out he didn't have it. During my investigation phase, I was shocked at how difficult the lifestyle is. So, more power to you! :thumbsup2

Anyway, that's my long winded way of routing you on!!!!! :lmao:

Thanks Rubato, just to let you know (but not to put a fine point on it) the Primal blueprint diet allows you to eat dairy as long as you feel that you don't have an intolerance to dairy. I have cream in my coffee every morning and cheese on my hamburgers. I have plenty of vegatarian primal friends. But, that is not to say you should convert to it either.
Anyway, thanks for reaching out to us!!!

Didn't know that. I looked into it a long time ago, and just assumed. Sorry. Maybe I'll have to look into it again. :thumbsup2

Thanks for the support everyone! Today has been better than yesterday, though I am certainly looking forward to dinner. ;)

Good job Mrs Gumdrop! It's all down hill from here! ;)

I am primal too and still love my dairy. One of my favorite breakfasts is a big bowl of berries (blueberries, blackberries, raspberries, strawberries), a big scoop of (full fat!) yogurt and a drizzle of honey. Yum!
