No Simple Carbs Support Thread

Welcome Jessicasmom! As I am sure you have read, we all do things a little differently, but I know I have found the support helpful!

I am going to admit that while your name and avatar are familiar from the EBTA thread, I don't remember any specific interactions we had. I became a full time student since the cruise and all sorts of useful information has been forgotten in the effort to shove more info in my brain. But I know I remember the people who's company I DIDN'T enjoy, so that has to be good right? Either way, I' m glad you are here!:flower3:

You brought up vacation eating, and I have come to a conclusion about our upcoming Alaska cruise. I have decided to remain sugar and flour free on my upcoimg trip. At the time of the trip, I will only have 3.5 months of the plan under my belt, and I don't want to lose my momentum. It will also be an experiment for myself to prove for myself, that I can have a wonderful vacation without obsessing over sugar! I am confident that between the no sugar added cheese cake and the fresh fruit onboard, I will be just fine!

Actually I have some other trips on my mind. In addition to Alaska in August, I might be headed to Disneyland in CA in November, followed up by a week in WDW in June. For some reason, crusing "on plan" seems relatively easy, but WDW without Dole Whip? That feels impossible! I am hoping that be June, I will able to eat sugar moderately while touring.

Hang with me while I take us off-topic for a sec...
In fact with these three trips coming up, I am considering doing a Pre-Trip Report that encompasses all the trips. It would take place over a year from June 2011-June 2012 to capture a year of firsts! It will be my first time on the Wonder, first time in Alaska, First time in Canada, First time in L.A., First time in Disneyland (and all that goes with it) and first weeklong trip to WDW (and all that goes with it). But will I be about to keep up with it?

Any thoughts?

Jessicasmom - when you returned home from your trip, did you have sugar withdrawl? It takes me about a week to be comfortable not eating sugar again after consuming it in quantity. But that might just be me. :confused3

Mrs. G: Don't feel bad...I'm terrible at remembering people, but you reminded me of a friend of mine, so you "stuck" in my head :goodvibes. We really never had much of an opportunity to get acquainted. I think we might have spoken a bit on the cabin tour.

As for post-cruise cravings, it really wasn't that difficult. In my head, I've just accepted that being home means low-carb, period, so I was able to get right back in line after the trip. I must say that, while we maintain a :rolleyes1 attitude about vacation eating, we find ourselves limiting the "bad" foods naturally. On the ship, we would have breakfast or lunch, rarely both, and whatever we wanted for dinner (early seating). The portions are not that large, so overall the impact was minimal. We would snack if we were hungry but never really stuffed ourselves (except for Palo :thumbsup2). And there were occasions when I chose the sugar-free desserts simply because they sounded better than the rest (SF creme brulee is :worship:). We kept physically active (by our standards) roaming the ship delivering FE & SM gifts and just exploring (our first time on the Magic). We're not sit-by-the-pool types. Of course, we ate more than normal (dinners at home rarely include an app, soup, salad, entree and dessert!), but way less than we would have years ago. I also tried not to drink my calories...only imbibed when it was free (and you know that wasn't very often!) On the WB, my adult dtr will be with us, so a drink-of-the-day will be in order, I'm sure.

We did an RCI cruise this past January out of Galveston and also ate whatever we wanted. That was part of a month-long trip to TN and TX to see family. We relaxed our eating style somewhat, but maintained our weight within a few pounds and leveled off again when we got home and went back to low-carb. It really is a lifestyle, not a diet.

I'm over 50 now and FINALLY feel like I've gotten a handle  on what it takes to get the weight down. Of course, it would take me this long to figure it out...when the metabolism is crawling and the hormones are working against me....:headache:.....ah, life.

As for the trip report...go for it! Wow! And what a great time you will have!

I'm doing good! Busy, but sort of keeping up with my good eating habits and I ran for 10 minutes the other night. I know that doesn't sound impressive but a year ago I literally couldn't even run one minute without stopping so ten is a miracle for me!

That sounds terrific! I'm trying to convince myself the exercise bike is NOT my enemy, so running for 10 min. does sound impressive. DH will do 20+ minutes on the bike (on the "Pikes Peak" setting...ugh) followed by 45 mins. of yoga; I can do 5-10 minutes on the "ride in the park" setting and am exhausted! And trying to contort myself into yoga poses...well, it wouldn't be pretty! :rotfl::lmao::rotfl2:

Congrats! 5.5lbs in 2 weeks is a great accomplishment! Don't be discouraged if it slows down at all, that's normal and you're still making healthy and positive changes for your life. :)

How are you feeling? That's important too!

JM beat me to commenting! I am totally impressed by your 10 mintues! Pretty soon it will be 20 minute, then 30. You are on your way.

:cool1: It's a day off for me, and I'm spending it :surfweb:! I just can't quit checking these boards...yep, I need to get off my tush and do something!

Thanks ladies! I was just lazing around but your words gave me motivation to get moving! :tigger: I will go do the run I was thinking of bagging tonight.

How is everyone feeling today?

I also found these badges in the smiley section. Pretty cool! You just type a colon, the word wish then your amount lost. (Rounded to five)

:wish75

Good for you Liloh and thanks for the tip! At this point my sig is so full, I don't think I could squeeze the 5 pound icon in.

You know, the past few days I have been shocked how little food I have wanted. I have been eating healthfully, but I lose interest before I get overly full instead of cleaning my plate!

Food aside, if you see me online tomorrow, please tell me to go away! I have 2 school projects I must work on tomorrow. Must, must, must. By next Tuesday night the pressure will be off and I can focus just on my regular class work. I have less than a month left in this semester and I am grateful!

Happy Easter ladies. Good luck avoiding those yummy treats. I think I am going to let myself have a small break today, especially because the weight loss has stalled out right now.

Mrs.Gumdrop: It sounds like you are really on top of everything. Great job on the weight loss! So, what are you going to school for? I am just starting back to school this summer at the age of 41. I am scared! And, I'm starting with algebra and chemistry! :scared1:

LiloH: You are talking my language. Running is my passion. It is fantastic that you ran 10 minutes! :cheer2: I ran marathon weekend this past January, and there are people of all fitness levels there. I absolutely know that you can run the Princess half. You have 10 months to train if you start now. :thumbsup2 If you need any advice, come over to the events/competition boards. They are great because they've all done it many times before.

Jessicasmom: Great job on your weight loss! That is so impressive! And, amazing control while vacationing! :thumbsup2

On the cruise front, I have found a way to cruise that works for me. I only order off the "diet" menu at dinner (called different things on different cruise lines). The food is amazing, and it's healthy. Something about having great chefs and unlimited resources to work on the best taste to that low cal food manages to work! ;) I only order sugar free desserts. Then, I run. I run about 4 miles a day while on the ship. I am, in fact, a lay around the pool kind of girl, so I have to do something to combat that. I enjoy a cocktail while cruising but never overdo it because those fruity drinks are killers. For breakfast and lunch, I eat as much fresh fruit as I can to try to fill up, then try to finish off with something healthy. So far, I've managed to maintain my weight or lose a pound or two on every cruise except my first one. On that first one, I had no idea what to expect, and managed a 10 pound gain. Of course, I was so skinny back then that I needed the 10 pounds.

And to you Tandy! We are having a very beautiful day today.

I would really love some sugar free jelly beans, but I haven't found any in my local stores. I am taking fresh berries and sour cream (a shockingly delicious comb) for desert at our family meal this afternoon.

I am getting an associates degree in Interior Design. I understand your reticence about getting back to math and science. I am taking Algebra this semester and I still have two more math classes before I complete my requirement. It is not nearly as hard as I remember, but this is remedial math! I am also taking Geology as a lab science, which I am really enjoying. Try not to be too nervous. And don't don's be afraid to ask for help!

I will be adopting your cruising strategy when if comes to food. Some people are good a moderation. I am not! I hope that I will be able to manage eating moderate amounts of sugar when I am a healthy weight. But I know myself, and right now, no sugar is the way for me.

Congrats on going back to school at such an "advanced" :rotfl:age (says one who's over 50!); I always thought about grad school, but life and economics always seemed to get in the way :sad2:. I'm sure you'll do very well in all of your classes, even math :teacher: !

Wow! :worship: talk about discipline while cruising! I'll never have that much self-control (not sure I really want to, actually :rolleyes1).

And to you Tandy! We are having a very beautiful day today.

Jelly Belly makes great sf beans, but you have to eat in moderation or they do cause the usual gastric problems  . I've found them in several stores where Jelly Bellies are sold, always in a small hanging bag (only mixed flavors).

The best of luck with your degree :flower3:. ID sounds like a lot of fun, although I know it's also very hard work.

You're absolutely right about the sugar. Sounds like you have a great handle on things.

Happy Easter!; hope everyone had a great day.

I also think you are so right about sugar; it's addictive! I've periodically tried to sneak a bit back in and all it does is kick up cravings. The weird thing is, I can handle honey and agave, but no sugar!

How did your assignment go?

I am horrified to say, my project is still not complete and I have a paper I need to work on today. So I am going to log out andgo take care of buisness.

Happy Monday everyone!

Hello Everyone! How is your week going?

I am happy to report that on day 21, I am down 8 pounds. :cool1: I am very pleased! Our Easter meal was a delicious and cheat-free success. And yesterday I had the most amazing mango. It's called a champagne mango. It is smaller than what we usually see in the stores and has a golden skin. Good Golly was that thing amazing. I took it to night class with me and was glad I did because someone gifted our class a chocolate cake. I just sat in back enjoyed my fabulous mango. :thumbsup2

I am good to go on the eating plan track but less good on the school track. I finished 1 of the 2 projects that were/are hanging over my head, but I still have the big one to go. I just feel so stressed. And then last night in algebra the prof introduced square roots and I just didn't understand. I wanted to cry, truly. I suddenly felt like a 3rd grader all over again who couldn't remember her times tables. :sad1:

But today is another day. So I am going to log off and go work on my math homework before heading to class. I will never get it if I don't try right? Right! Off I go.

Congrats!! Doesn't it feel great to see results from all the changes you've made? Hopefully that is motivation to keep it up!

As for the stress, keep your head up. Your work WILL get done if you stick with it and keep moving. I'm definitely rooting for you!! :)

I am not going to lie, today sucked. I had two tests, a (very late) project to turn in and all the rehashing 9/11 in the news really started to get to me.

After the first test, but before the second, I came really close to cheating. All I wanted to do was drive off campus and buy a big ol cheeseburger. Something inside willed me to just keep walking and not head to the car. I think I understood a tiny bit that going off the rails would only make things much worse. And I know now that starting over during finals would be extra horrible. :scared1:

I arrived home grumpy, tired and hungry. But Not guilty, or defeated or Angry. :thumbsup2 I guess I will have to call that a win!

I also have to say how much I appreciate this forum! Have a space for venting and support really means a lot.

Sorry yesterday was so hard but you did it! You kept going!! Congrats! Sometimes winning a battle of the mind is more of a victory than anything the scale could say.

Yesterday was such an emotional day for so many reasons for so many of us. No one could blame you for feeling upset yesterday.

Anyway, so glad you got through yesterday. Congrats !!!

Lauren: It's amazing you made it through if you were that bad off! Congratulations. That is a success in anyone's book! You are learning so much. It's day to day, and no matter how long you are successful, you will have bad days. I am a firm believer that, every once in awhile, it's okay to have those bad days, and even succumb if you need to. It makes you stronger in the end.
Congrats on your weight loss. 8 pounds is awesome!
Interior design sounds like so much fun, but I am not a creative person. One of my best friends does it for a living, and, every time I see one of her houses or offices, I am intimidated. She just looks at a room, and has all these ideas flowing. I'm jealous.:)

How's everyone else doing? I fell completely off the wagon 2 weeks ago, but fought my way back last week. I am back to no sugar, no white flours, and am working on no processed foods. I am also a vegetarian, so I have to make sure to eat something besides fruits and veggies!

My 11 year old son and I ran a 10k on Saturday. It was his first race and he hates to run. So, much to my surprise, he asked if we could do a half marathon! I am sooooo in to running. I'm glad he enjoyed himself so much. I've got one planned for his 12th birthday in November, so, with full time school and training, I'll be a busy girl. My fall school schedule is ridiculous! 18 credit hours and traveling 30 minutes each way 5 days a week is going to add up.

Good for you for resisting! That takes a lot of willpower and I bet knowing you did made your resolve even stronger later on.
Lots of busy ladies on this board! Just think how much energy eating right and exercising is giving us! It would be so much harder with bad habits in place. Go us! :)
