News Round Up 2016

The reptilian part of my brain, which is somewhat disposed to conspiracy theories, wonders whether Iger is deliberately pumping the well dry. Disney is seemingly striving to exhaust all earning potential from its movie franchise IP within just a few years, leaving very little new franchises in place. Of the few new IP successes Disney has bought to market recently, Frozen at the very least seems to be something of an unplanned success.

Whoever takes Iger's place is going to have their work cut out for them keeping Disney's movie machine printing cash as efficiently as it is right now.
I'm sure there will be a dip at some point. You can't have success forever. I just watched Waking Sleeping Beauty. A great documentary of the rise of Disney animation under Eisner. Animation was not doing well when he came in. Then soon enough with some work they had success after success. Even when they got to the lion king they thought who's going to want to see this. They thought for sure the lion king was a huge risk and a likely flop. Little did they know it would be one of Disney's most successful movies of all time.

Not sure who's idea it was (Iger's or someone else's) but their movie strategy is brilliant. Where a studio would be lucky to get a nice trilogy of movies, Disney has multiple trilogies going within one "universe". We all know what Marvel has been up to...each phase leads to an Avengers movie, and then the film following an Avengers movie is "smaller". The risks aren't high and they don't try to compete with the latest Avengers movie. They recognize that there is a build up that has to happen, so the movie that follows and Avengers movie is typically pulled back a little.

On the Star Wars side of things, they have at least two trilogies going on right now. The episodic films (VII, VIII, IX) and the Anthology series.

Think about any TV show you may watch (Once Upon a Time, Game of Throne, Arrow, etc). You care about the characters and want to see what happens. Disney has done a great job at developing characters you want to watch and getting you in the seats.

That is true. I think up to this point most if not all of the live action remakes have been at least somewhat different. This might be the first that is almost completely the same. I am also okay with that though. Beauty and the beast is one of the best disney films of all time.

Kubo doesn't interest me at all. The animation looks good but it just doesn't appeal to me.

Also, they have all been at least pretty good - it isn't like Disney is giving them the quickie treatment, they have been of high quality

I'll give you Jungle Book as something different (and better) than the original...but Cinderella was so similar it was scary. I expect this to be like that - only maybe more so.

This is true - they are making them quality movies.

I'd say the difference there lies with how successful the original was, and if it's aged well.

Although many hardcore Disney fans may say that the original JB was amazing, it's overall reception today is a simple meh - some people love it, others hate it. Same with Pete's Dragon - which is why we get these movies that may be vastly different from the original.

Meanwhile, things like Cinderella/B&TB/TLM (Or generally any of their princess movies, for that matter) remain iconic - and Disney attempting to widely change the story for a live action version wouldn't look good for the general public. Maleficent fell into that issue, though that was generally pretty bad in it's own special way.

Universal might be using a fastpass like system for one ride, Pteranodon Flyers. A photo popped up on twitter showing a small hut with a sign saying "Return Time Tickets" and two covered things. It should be noted that Pteranodon Flyers is not part of the Express Pass but can easily get back up due it's low through put. One wonders what Universal would do if they get favorable feedback to a fastpass like system.

Well, the thing is, Iger (and Eisner during his last couple of years) did try to create a lot of new franchises and pretty much all of them tanked at the box office. At this point they are clearly going safe with their lineup of films. Most of the new franchises are basically coming from animation.

Yes I saw this but didn't know what to think of it.

I can't wait to see the new Beauty and the Beast film - it's always been my favorite and it looks like they're going to do a great job with the live action version. I have no problem with them remaking these classics as live action features. Pretty smart of them!

They did that around Easter 2015 while we were there. It was simply to eliminate the mass of people in line as there isn't alot of room for them. At least at that time, it was a team member giving our kids a little piece of paper, nothing more.

My friend got to Disney today and said that as of an hour ago they were under a tornado warning. Sounds like Hermine is going to make for an interesting holiday weekend after all.
