New rule for banks????

And be sure to tell TCF why you're moving your money! Are you eligible to join a credit union?

By the way, do you have or are you willing to get direct deposit? That would exempt you from the fees.

Had direct deposit. DH just lost his job. Will be taking money from savings to cover expenses so we will be okay I guess for a while until I find something or he finds another job. My guess is money transfer from savings to checking would not be the same as direct deposit.

I couldn't get through on moveyourmoney.info, but I was able to find a local bank by using this url: http://moveyourmoney.info/find-a-bank

Maybe it's just their main page that's down because of all the traffic?

Unfortunately, no Lansing banks are listed on the page I put my zip code into. Most of the banks that are listed are TCF, the one the OP was seeing the high fee at. :(

Bummer!

I still can't get the page to load when I put in my zip. DH wanted to see if his bank was listed. :rotfl:

Oh, yeah, one :rotfl: more comment: Time to change banks anyway. It appears the teller lied to you about the REASON for the change.

This is a huge leap-I am sure the teller didn't LIE, I am sure the teller MISUNDERSTOOD how it worked.

I am a member of my Credit Union at work....I would NEVER change to a Bank, they rip you off, especially BOA!:sad2:

I am also a member of a credit union and completely agree with Poohbear. The fees are slim to none and the service is wonderful. I would suggest checking with your employers to see if they have credit union affiliations and/or going with a small bank. My DH was with a large bank b/f we got married and at that time didn't really consider my credit union. After seeing the difference in service, he quickly switched and never looked back.

Also, right now I'm getting 3.5% interest on my checking account. Hard to beat that with today's interest rates.

At this point, though, I wouldn't move to a smaller bank. Although things seem better, the system is still faulty, and I feel safer with a larger bank.

I would rather take my chances with a small credit union than be fee gouged by the big banks.

I  NFCU!

BoA doesn't charge me any fees.

I would definitely change banks if they want to charge you fees like that.

On the other hand, why not just keep an extra $500 in your checking account instead of savings. It's not like you are going to lose any significant amount of interest with the rates on savings accounts as low as they are.

My bank has charged low balance fees for years. You can combine household balances and the mortgage counted. So I never thought about minimums until we paid off the mortgage. DH and I keep enough in checking that we meet the minimum and when my daughter opened her account, I had her open a joint account with me so that it would be included in the household balance.

I do agree with those who say that if you aren't going to have a large enough balance to waive the monthly fee, find another bank. It is a pain to do, especially if you have direct deposit and lots of automatic payments coming out. But worth it if you are going to be charged $10 per month.

Three cheers for my credit union.

By the way....what's a bank:rotfl:

Just saw on the news that Citibank is going to start charging $9.95 for accounts with less than a $1500 balance!!! :scared1:

Looks like a $500 balance might be a good deal.

only certain banks do that.

i saw your reply to someone else saying you don't have interest checking, which is usually is the case for an account like that.

i'd go elsewhere. i think the teller might have been misinformed.

I don't think my bank has started charging fees yet. I work here so I have no choice really where I keep my money. Plus, they've always been good to me :)

I do have one funny story. We will be charging fees in the future and one of our products is called Totally Free Checking. We need to change the name in some of our operating systems before the changes occur and my boss said that it would be an easy fix...change the name to Totally FEE Checking!

Yup. I received a letter in the mail last week. :sad2: I'm so mad as I can't close my account until my tax refund lands in my account which should be in the next few weeks. And you better believe as soon as it does, I'm done with Citibank. I've had that account for 20 years!

We usually carry a decent balance, but this is silly. Leave your bank if they charge you to make money on your money. Move to a credit union...

I hope BOA doesn't do that. There's no way in heck I'd be able to keep that kind of a balance. Not at all. I'd have to go to a paycard instead of a direct deposit checking account.

No. Sorry. The checking account is mine and DH's. I was just dropping off a deposit of coins DD saved and wanted put into her savings account. DH and I have a savings and checking there. Oh, and yes she is in high school.

I have TCF also...that link posted above shows the fee only if you don't have direct deposit or a couple other things. You should check it out first. We have the basic no frills checking and pay no fee with direct deposit.

Well, I have accounts at two banks and a credit union right now - credit union for about twenty years, need to set up direct deposit after changing jobs; one national (regional?) bank... and one bank on that moveyourmoney site! And, I've had that account for, um, going on 37 years. I called today to make sure they weren't changing my checking account to a fee one (they did that once, a few years ago, but I got it switched back), to make sure there's no fee on my savings account, and to order a debit card. The CSR asked if I'd signed up for their online banking service, and I hadn't. She talked me through the steps. Not hard, I know - but I thought, given the size of the bank, it was a REALLY nice move.

Oh, and then I asked if she knew how the weather was - and she did! Very helpful indeed!
