...Although not my favorite resort, SSR has the extra 12 years, and we can always go elsewhere...
Nails on chalkboard.

The comment was made because of your comments about not being thrilled with SSR, and especially the "we can always go elsewhere" statement. To be honest, I cringed too when I read that. Guides have been telling this to SSR buyers, and I think a lot of those buyers are in for quite a bit of disappointment in the future.

Frankly, SSR is the largest resort and therefore has the most owners. When many of those owners are trying for the smaller resorts at the 7-month window, especially if they're hoping to go at a popular time, they're not going to be able to get in and will be "stuck" at SSR.

The mantra on these boards has always been "Buy where you want to stay", and for good reason. As DVC grows, that 4-month home resort priority will become more and more crucial.

Thanks for the clarification. I certainly didn't mean to be a pain to anyone's ears. As much as I hear "buy where you stay", I have also heard "points are points". This seems to be a similar controvery to buying new versus resale. You will always have a fair number of people on either side of the coin. We made the best decision we felt we could make and will just have to see how it all works out. In the end, it *is* Disney, afterall, so how bad can it be? (this is meant to be a rhetorical question, by the way! :goodvibes )

That's all you can do!!! And I totally agree with you ... it *is* Disney, and that in itself is magical! :wizard:

I think you made a fine decision. The SSR contract has about 1/3 more years than the other resorts. (49 remaining years rather than 37 remaining years). That's quite a few, and can easily justify buying there, it will help it's resale value (if you need to do that in 10 or 15 years say), and if you keep it, then you or your children get 12 more years of Disney vacations bought and paid for at today's prices!

What is the current going Disney price for any or all of the resorts? I heard there is a $8.00 point buy back. What is the price before this buyback? Are all of the points the same price for any resort or do they change depending on the resort? I know SS is available and the others are wiat listed. :earsgirl:

I dont have the answer to whether direct or resale is better, but what I would like to know is what is the advantage of adding on at different resorts?

We only purchased 150 points at Vero beach and are considering buying more, what would be the advantages of adding at VWL,BV,SSR, etc if we would only be adding 50 or 75 points. Yes, it would give us the 11 month window, but if you make a reservation for only a few days at a resort and cant entend it when the 7 month window arrives, what good is it ( I dont like to unpack, repack, unpack again at a different hotel)?

Im not trying to cause an arguement by any means, just one of the issues we are dealing with about adding on.

Maxsdaddy!

That sounds like a very good question to me - one I have pondered myself. I am thinking although a 50 pt add on will not give you a full "vacation", it does give you a couple to a few days (depending on the season and size of room) to stay at that resort at the 11 month window. It also just gives you additional points to stay anywhere else at the 7 month window (combined with your existing points). Maybe that is too simplistic a view. My mind is so cluttered with all of this DVC business (after our recent purchase last week) I would not be surprised if I am completely missing the point of such an add on after all :rolleyes1   .

Best wishes,
Kristina

No, you're actually right on the money. A small add on at a different resort gives you two things -- more "points is points" points, and the 11-month window at another resort (but only for the points you own at that resort).

That small block of points with the 11 month window, however, might give you a really nice vacation. For example, you could use 50 points for a lot of things -- Saturday-Tuesday, 4 nights including a Saturday, in a BWV standard studio during Food and Wine (48 points); or Sunday-Thurs, 5 nights in the same accommodations (45 points).

For Kristina, living in Florida as we do, short trips are easy. We do almost all of our trips in 3-5 day bunches.

Many who buy small add-ons at other resorts bank and borrow to get enough points for their vacation.

For example, if you bought 50 points at VWL, you could take up to a 150 point vacation there every third year. That's enough to cover either 5 nights in a 1 bedroom or a whole week in a studio for every season except Premier (Christmas & Easter).

Best wishes -

Edit: Yeah, what CarolMN said...

Don't forget you can also bank/borrow points. So if you did a 50 pt add-on at VWL, you could bank one year, then during the next year borrow points. So you could have up to 150 points available every 3 years, or 100 pts every 2 years.

Example with October UY:
October 1, 2004 - bank 50 pts
October 1, 2005 - current 50 pts and borrow 50 pts from 2006. Total 150 pts
October 1, 2006 - 0 pts available

October 1, 2007 - bank 50 pts
October 1, 2008 - current 50 pts and borrow 50 pts from 2009. total 150
October 1, 2009 - 0 pts available

I wasn't thinking about the banking/borrowing idea. I was thinking of putting everything together for 1 longer vacation a year at 1 resort(as I said, I dont want to repack). I know many people use DVC points to take more frequent short trips, but for us right now with small child(another on the way) 1 long vacation works better.
Thanks to all for your input. Adding on is something we are considering, and we've only been members since July.

6IRISH - I'm glad I'm not the only one with this on my mind. :scratchin
