Please forgive me if I don't make too much sense. I'm still in shock but I really need to get all of this out.
DH, myself and our kids DD7yo and DS 2.5yo were driving home from the mall on a highway we travel on almost daily. I was doing the speed limit(65mph), we all had seat belts on, DS was in his car seat. I was on a 2 lane highway and all of a sudden I hear my DH yell, I see the cars ahead of me swearving and all of a sudden right in front of me, coming towards me was the trailer of a huge truck tumbling towards me. The thing was huge and I tried so hard to avoid hitting it head on. We skidded and all I remember was trying to stear my car away from hitting the trailer, we smacked into the mile marker on the passenger side door. Then all I remember was being upside down, then sideways. The car was on its side the drivers side. DH got his seatbelt of and climbed out the sunroof. A guy from I don't know where came and helped him, then tried to get me out, but I got my seat belt off and tried to get to my kids. This stranger pulled DD out and I got DS out. I was in shock. DD was screaming and shaking. DS was asleep when we got into the accident so he was just waking up and had no idea of what happened. Dh was bleeding from his arm. I was just in shock. People had pulled over to check on us. The highway was dead stopped in both directions. People were looking at us in awe. I was saying why is everyone staring at us? A woman came over to me and said we all just watched your truck flip over 3 times in the air hit down on its side, and flip again. We all walked out of the car and they were amazed. We couldn't believe it. We knew we had flipped but we had no idea of how bad it was. It is a miracle that my family and I are alive. We were taken to the hospital, we are all bruised and achy, DH's arm was cut because his passenger window had shattered on him. I had my window down and thank God my sunroof was open. The whole thing is surreal. I still can't believe what happened.
As I learned more about what happened from the police and witnesses, the driver of the truck was going fast on a turn in the highway. What he was trailing(bottles of wine) was a bigger load than an 18 wheeler, it took a crane to get it off the highway, it just came off the hitch!!!! How that happened, who knows. It definately couldn't have been on correctly. He was driving and didn't realize that the trailer came off until he somehow lost control of the part he was driving? We are actually really worried about the driver because he had to be air lifted to a hospital. I have no idea how he is.
There were alot of witnesses and they gave their statements to the police and gave us their info just in case. We were so lucky there were so many kind, good, caring people around. There were so many cops, firefighters, ambulance. They were all so great to us, especially to my kids. DD is really shaken up. She keeps crying about it. So is DH. I'm in a daze. I'm trying really hard not to think of what could,ve happened. the police told me I was a great driver to avoid hitting the trailer, that I saved my families life. I just feel so guilty that I was driving and I couldn't avoid what did happen. The trailer came from the opposite side, over the median aiming right for us. I tried so hard to not hit it but we still flipped over so many times. I really don't want to drive and DD keeps begging me not to ever drive again. My poor daughter is traumatized. I know we are all OK and that's all that matters, but I keep thinking this can't be real.
The car of course is totalled. We had to go to the towing place to get my keys, the only ones we had on us to get in our house. When I saw our car I was so overwhelmed. I can't believe we're alive.
I can't really think straight so I'm going to stop typing. If you can all spare a prayer for my daughter I would appreciate it. Also for the driver of the trailer. And his family. I was told his wife was driving behind him following him and she saw the whole thing.
Thanks for letting me share my thoughts.
Oh, please everyone always wear your seatbelts. We would have all died if we didn't have them on. And moms, please make sure your childs carseat is properly installed. Thank God ours was and DS is perfectly fine.
