MSNBC Suspends Imus After Racial Remarks

Maybe they were replaying it? Was Imus talking about how he had the guts to go on Al's show but Al was refusing to do his show?

Exactly! Also, how many other public figures have made offensive comments including some of our most notable congressmen and senators. Imus said it. He apologized. Get over it. I'm not a fan of Imus, but this punishment is over the top.

It is over the top but in the end, I am not sure he can come back from this. The only presidential candidate who seems to believe in redemption is John McCain. Now John McCain is NOT my favorite republican but I do have to admire his sense of loyalty which isn't that common these days. On the other hand I think you can count on no more Chris Dodd appearances, no more Lieberman, Biden, etc, and the usual parade of NBC pundants, etc. I am alwo wondering if anyone with a book to sell will give Imus a chance to promote their book first on his program. That was a rule he had. If you go elsewhere first, you don't get aired on his show. He may be damaged beyond recovery even if "all is forgiven". To often all is not forgiven.

We are such a rudy poo candy a society that is afraid of anyone saying anything controversial. Yeah his remarks were wrong, but there is a place for wrong and offensive comments in our society. We shouldn't limit their acceptability to only those who we deem that it is ok to offend. We need to grow some thicker skin and let the insults hurl. Let's have some damn fun in this country instead of looking something to whine about. Political correctness does nothing good for America, we take ourselves way too seriously.

I agree also. I don't like a lot of what Imus says, or what Howard Stern says (that is why I don't listen to either). Neither would I listen to Jessie Jackson or Al Sharpton. I find them all offensive, but we have free speech in this country and it's my freedom to turn the channel.

I think Imus will come out of this alright. Imus's audience understands where he's coming from and has heard this kind of joke before. As I mentioned earlier, it's all part of his act. He'll take the 2 week suspension and probably return to the air with some of the largest rating he's had since he started his career covering the signing of the Declaration of Independence. :teeth:

The funny thing is watching Al and Jessie call for boycotts of Imus' show. I have not heard them call for a boycott of BET and some of the music channels, which air rap videos featuring large groups of half naked women dry-humping some rapper while he talks about his 'ho's. Snoop Dogg is considered mainstream, but Imus is a pariah? Gimme a break .. This whole issue will be kept alive by individuals craving camera time.

Where's a clapping emote when you need one?

In no way do I agree with what Imus said... but I think he has the right to say it. Until people stop calling themselves names such as these why is it wrong for others to say the same? Not the same context I understand but it still applies.

I used to work for BET and spoke to Bob Johnson PERSONALLY about the image he's portraying in those disgusting videos. I guess we have those videos and you have "Girls Gone Wild"... both are WRONG and not accepted in society but guess what, sex sells and as NAUSEATING as they are they will always exist.

There will always be someone offending someone else, it exists. The only difference between then and now is the people who are the victims of the offense are no longer rolling over and taking it. If someone called your wife and her club members a bunch of "fat a$$ hoes" I'm sure you would just say "get over it"... huh?

Tavis Smiley said it best this morning "it makes no sense to be reactive but to be PROactive". Instead of getting POed about this mess but to try to fix the problems that allow us to continually be seen in such a derogatory manner... including the DISGUSTING booty shaking videos and gangsta rap throwing around terminology that we don't want to hear from anybody but allow in certain medium. It's disheartening that this kind of diatribe only comes about when it's put upfront on tape like this instead of just kept amongst peers.

I don't think it is lack of audience that will be a factor here. I think he will dramatically curtain his acerbic manner, which may make those who tune it for that sort of thing, bored. I think he will have a hard time getting his guests back. THAT will hurt him because to be honest, I don't think he handles callers well, he is rude and doesn't really engage them in conversation so "talk" radio may not be a viable alternative. I also don't think he is witty enough to do a talk show with no guests. I would tune in for his guests, without a continued stream of interesting guests, he may have a problem. I think that there will be a cadre of liberals, for whom he has provided an audience, deserting him ....unless the networks order them to return (Andrea Mitchell, Chris Matthews, Russert, et al)

Actually I would:confused3

Who cares what others say. I am not a "ho". I know it. I could care less what others say about me. Infact, I just called my best girlfriend a "ho" about a half hour ago. I don't know why, I just wanted to see how she would respond. Keep in mind we are "boring" SAHM's. I worked it into our goodbye and her response was priceless:rotfl: , but too naughty for The DIS;)

Who says he hasn't got the right to say it? He's not getting arrested is he?

"Free speech" doesn't protect you from any and all consequences of what you say, it just means you don't get thrown in jail for it.

Imus did something that reflected badly on his employer, and his employer is taking action - the same thing that would happen in any other workplace.

So would my DH ............ after he cleaned the guy's clock 6 times over. And I'm sure quite few other men in here would do the same if someone called their wife "a fat *** ho".

Really, the rhetoric is starting to venture into LaLa Land with each person trying to prove how open-minded they are.

Btw, both Jackson and Sharpton have criticized the black rappers and hip-hop music in general for their language towards black women.

This is the whole issue in a nutshell. Freedom of speech is not the license to say whatever you want, whereever you want, and whenever you want without any repercussions.

And in the real world, most employers would've kicked the offender right out the door.
