MSNBC Suspends Imus After Racial Remarks

That's what I thought, no connection what so ever.

When all else fails, change the subject.

I'm sorry you can't see the relevance. But it was *you* that mentioned Rush and made an incorrect statement. There is certainly a connection between Rush's comments and the media's coverage of two black coaches in the Superbowl. Maybe you weren't paying attention because the comments weren't made by someone you dislike.

He was FORCED to resign. Here is what he said about quarterback Donovan McNabb of the Philadelphia Eagles:

"I don't think he's been that good from the get-go. I think what we've had here is a little social concern in the NFL. I think the media has been very desirous that a black quarterback do well. They're interested in black coaches and black quarterbacks doing well. I think there's a little hope invested in McNabb, and he got a lot of credit for the performance of this team that he really didn't deserve."

Sounds like a football sports analysis to me.

Once again you paint disagreement as an inability to understand the discussion. :rolleyes1

I think this is a good time to actually remind those reading that I actually diagree with Imus being forced to resign or fired. The same was true for Rush at the time.

But he wasn't fired as claimed by cardaway. And I'm familiar with what he said. So where is the racism in those comments? Why did the media make such a big deal about *black* coaches in the last Superbowl?

Well, the last sentence ("...he got a lot of credit for the performance of this team that he really didn't deserve.") is at least...which, as much as it pains me to say, I agree with Rush. However, the first part of Rush's comments, about the media, is ridiculous and full of his typical conspiritorial bluster.

indeed...

I don't care if you agree or disagree that Imus or Rush should have been fired or forced to resign. I don't think either one should have been either. The point I was trying to make was that IMO, Rush's comments weren't racist and there is indeed a connection between Rush's comments and the last Superbowl. Too bad you didn't understand that. I thought I was quite clear.

I'm going to have to agree with you there. I'm no fan of Imus. Not because of his remarks, but because I think his show is lame. I love Howard Stern and south Florida radio personality Neil Rogers, both who say similarly inflammatory stuff. Why anyone would get in an uproar about an insensitive remark that Imus said is beyond me. Reminds me of Bill Maher getting canned for his un-PC remarks on his show "Politically Incorrect". Hello?!?! It's part of these guys' shtick. They're equal offenders to all people, and shouldn't be punished for doing what they're paid to do. If you don't like what's being said, simply place your hand on the little knob on the right side of your radio and turn.

:thumbsup2

Really? You missed the extensive media coverage of two black QB's during the run up to the Superbowl?

Personally (at least in this case) I think Rush was spot on.

I understand just fine, I simply disagree. Too much coffee this morning?

I think it's all a bunch of bunk! Just something for Sharpton and Jackson to get airtime for. He said it, said he's sorry, get over it. I agree with the poster that said the networks hire these guys for the ratings then act shocked when they say something like this... :confused3

As for Rush, I don't see anything wrong with what he said. The media was playing the "race card" in big ways on that one and no one was upset before the game. Rush stated the obvious and they threw a fit... again, go figure. :confused3

I personally do not listen to either of these guys and my opinion on their shows being good or not makes no difference.

Two words for you: Doug Williams. The NFL's already had a black QB who led the Redskins to the Superbowl, won the thing and got MVP honors!! I don't think Rush's comments were racist, just ill-conceived and lacking in common sense. He wanted to attack the media on a story (wanting a black QB to succeed) that no longer existed.

The Dungy/Smith (coaches, not QB's, as you said in your post, but I get where you're going) story was huge, seeing that they were the first black coaches in the Superbowl. If you remember back not too long ago, the league thought that blacks couldn't be head coaches because they lacked the intelligence to lead. That story is huge!

I'll admit that I don't know a whole lot about football so I don't know who he is.

Not long ago? How long ago was that?

So the league was racist? :confused3

So right there is the connection I was referring to.

Because the media made a huge deal out of there being to black coaches in the Superbowl at the same time.

And maybe you could explain why Rush's comments were racist?

:confused3 It was the first time it happened, I think that's a noteworthy thing. And it was coaches not QBs. I am guessing you won't be happy on April 15 with MLB.

I find it hilarious that racist Imus went on racist Rev. Al show to make an apology. They are both cut from the same cloth.

If he'd worked for me, I'd have fired him. I wouldn't want to be represented by someone that says stuff like that.

There is no law against saying what you want (and shouldn't be), but there is no law that says you have to pay someone to say things you find disgusting, either.

I guess I'm not as excited about it. I think the media coverage was more noteworthy than two black coaches being in the Superbowl. Just as I wasn't all that excited about a woman becoming the Speaker of the House. It was bound to happen eventually. Just is the first black president or the first woman president.

What happens on April 15th in baseball?

I agree.

Charade, April 15 is Jackie Robinson day. Many players and coaches will be wearing his number that day (in fact I believe ALL the Dodgers will be wearing 42), and I am sure the Fox broadcast will have some sort of Jackie Robinson tribute.

Yeah, we all know what gets you exited: another old Republican white guy in the White House. ;)

Imus is on the Today show right now getting into it with Sharpton.
