Moved from the Budget Board: anyone else eliminating High Fructose Corn Syrup

Does anyone else avoid MSG? I've recently discovered that I need to avoid it, and it's everywhere!

I've cut out HFCS and hydrogenated oils at my DD's urging, and that was hard enough, but avoiding MSG is a nightmare. (Because I love salty, packaged convenience foods. And soup.)

Any tips from others who are sensitive to MSG?

We've cut down quite a bit on HFCS. The only one complaining is actually my healthiest eater because she doesn't like pure maple syrup. She wants the Mrs. Butterworth's! :lmao:

Most of our groceries now come from Trader Joe's. Does anyone know if cane juice is as horrible as HFCS? Any info would be appreciated.

I think the theory is that HFCS is so bad because of the chemical processing of it, etc makes it unnatural for your body to breakdown, etc. Whereas cane sugar is more natural. Someone else can probably give better info.

For the person asking for barbeque sauce recipes...

I've been looking for a great bottled HFCS free barbeque sauce, but haven't found one I like. I ended up making a batch of the Flame Tree BBQ sauce with some Meijer organic ketchup (sweetened with sugar) and it was AWESOME and SOOO Easy...freezes well, too.

BBQ Sauce

Ingredients

58 ozs Ketchup
7 ozs Rice Wine Vinegar
4 ozs Molasses
2 Tbsps Chili Powder
2 Tbsps Paprika
2 tsps Tumeric
2 tsps Ground Cumin
2 Tbsps Garlic Salt
1/2 tsp Ground Cloves
2 Tbsps Onion Powder
16 ozs Water
2 Tbsps Brown Sugar

*I halved the recipe easily....

Method

Mix all ingredients together and simmer for 20-30 minutes.

I know it's difficult to find HFCS-free BBQ sauce ...... so thought I'd report that while at Costco this weekend I found this:

Organicville BBQ sauce
35 oz. for $4.99 (I think)

It's a decent size bottle for the price. And also GLUTEN FREE.

Costco also had Organicville salad dressings.

I was at BJs last Monday & was delighted to find Bulls Eye Original BBQ sauce to be HFCS Free! On the cap of the label it reads, "New Recipe, No High Fructose Corn Syrup!"

I had also been searching for a BBQ Sauce for awhile.

In the same trip, my DD6 found that Danimals Drinkable Yogurt is also now HFCS free! She was delighted, as she is not a huge fan of the Stoneyfield I have been buying.

I haven't been keeping up so forgive me if this has already been posted but Stop and Shop has an organic line now. Nature's Promise. We have tried the pretzels, animal crackers, teddy grahams, meat and bread (to name a few!) They taste great!

We tried this Bullseye sauce this weekend and it's fine making pulled pork sandwiches!

Yum!

I'm so glad to hear about the BBQ sauces.

I was at Whole Foods today, and their line is all HFCS free, but I know they are only in certain parts of the country.

I eliminated it for a long time when I went low glycemic and ate 6 times a day. I felt much better, my energy levels were more stable, and the weight melted away. My cravings for junk food also went away.

HFCS is among the top worst things for us.

REALLY?! That's awesome! I guess I really need to be out on the lookout for that crap in our foods that I buy. Just another ingredient we have to do without. I suppose shopping on the outside isles of the stores wouldn't hurt. No processed foods!!! It's so hard to do especially with kids who are so picky about what they eat. I have a four year old son (will be 4 June 3rd) and he won't eat anything but cheetos, french fries, bread, and chips/crackers. Oh sometimes yogurt but still picky. Ugh...

Shopping the outside of the store is always the best option! But their are healthy cracker/snack options. Kashi brand crackers are good. I also have found certain wheat crackers that don't contain HFCS. Cheeto's are free of the stuff. I buy the "Natural" ones (they're white) and it's a now and then treat.

Don't mean to sound like an advertisement, but I maintain a list of HFCS free foods here: http://www.stophfcs.com/list.html

Thank you for the link to the list, I have been trying to cut out HFCS from our diet. I have discovered Trader Joe's and started buying some things from there, but its still cheaper to shop at Aldi's so little by little we are trying to change.

Thanks so much for posting this. That's my favorite, but we'd been using a different brand that DH likes. When I read it's label, it had HFCS. Now we can go back to MY favorite! (I had originally started using it when an Applebee's waiter told us that was what they used on their riblets.)

Regarding yogurt, I love YoCrunch vanilla with the crunch pieces  and was happy that it is HFCS free. However, the same thing with the strawberry yogurt has HFCS. Just a reminder that you may find that different flavors of the same product may or may not have it. Doesn't hurt to double check the label.

I was happy to find Bulls Eye too! There are several flavors all labeled HFCS free. On sale at Publix this week for 4/$5.

I cut out high fructose corn syrup a few years ago. I read labels and do most of my own cooking (have not yet mastered sourdough bread :sad2: ). I also try not to use white sugar frequently since it's really had all the nutrition processed out of it. I use sucanat, turbinado sugar, pure maple syrup, agave nectar (though I've read you have to be careful w/ that, too, b/c some people have actually taken HFCS and labeled it agave nectar), and stevia. But I've noticed that I feel healthier, my nails grow longer, and I have a clearer complexion if I limit *all* sugars. Which I need to do again. *sigh*

:hippie:

As many of you know, I'm keeping a list of non HFCS foods at www.stophfcs.com/list

However, I have recently added a message board so folks can share HFCS free foods, as well as ask for a HFCS suggestion.

I would so appreciate it if y'all would share some of your findings (info on this thread has been marvelous!).

There is a Message Board link at www.stophfcs.com or you can get to it directly here: http://stophfcs.aforumfree.com/index.htm

Please feel free to make suggestions. I'm a newbie when it comes to message boards.

Thanks!

I bought some HFCS-free soda today at the store to keep in my office. It is called Blue Sky Organic Soda New Century Cola. I hope its good. I didn't have time to check out the cereal aisle because I was running late for work. I bought my regular Special K with berries to keep in my office. Is there anything similar that is HFCS-free?

Maggie
