Moved from the Budget Board: anyone else eliminating High Fructose Corn Syrup

I wanted to thank everyone for keeping this topic active and for all the contributions.

I have been maintaining an HFCS free list (www.stophfcs.com/list.html), and this site was recently mentioned in Living Green magazine. I was so thrilled to see that word is, indeed, getting out.

If you go to this page www.stophfcs.com/blog, then click on the magazine image, you'll be able to read the article. :goodvibes

I clicked on the blog link and got a message that the system couldn't find the file specified. :confused3

I'm not convinced that fructose is the debil.

Recently, I've all-but-eliminated fat from my diet and pretty much said goodbye to my dear friends, Mr. Bread and Mr. Pasta. Those extra pounds are disappearing and I have lots more energy.

It's not fructose, but high-fructose corn syrup, that we are talking about. They sound similar, but fructose is naturally occuring while HFCS is chemically altered.

Just wanted to post that we have been mostly off of HFCS for over a month (I still have a bit of Pepsi every day - gotta have one vice!!), and I feel GREAT!! I feel lighter, cleaner and overall just more healthy. We've been looking to the bakery department for breads, as it is so hard to find any without HFCS in it. Target has a good selection of breads, buns and rolls.

:cool1:

I just stumbled across this site and want to thank you all for the great info and links to sites with lists of high fructose corn syrup free food alternatives. I get migraines, tons of them really( 15/month), and the corn syrup seems to be a common ingredient in many of my triggers. Sadly, my list of triggers is as large as the list of things that contain the stuff I can't do artificial sweeteners either for the same reason. I wish I could find that sugar only soda for an occasional sip but have resorted to drinking water only for the time being and there has been a drastic & immediate improvement. Anyway I believe 100% there is something odd about the corn syrup we eat & drink all the time otherwise my brain couldn't tell the difference. Thanks again, its good to know I'm not alone.

LuvOrlando, in Kroger today in the Mexican food section there was coke made with sugar. It was 1.89 a bottle!!!! but if it's just for an occasional alternative to water....

I don't think I posted it here (if I did I apologize for the redundance), but on stophfcs, I posted that I found bread without HFCS at Costco that my family likes. It's called Natural Ovens Bakery Healthy Beginnings White Wheat Bread. It's like soft white sandwich bread. It's $2.99 for two good-sized loaves. Gotta be careful not to let it get smooshed on the way home. Finding that helped me make my decision to become a member. Now, I wish I could find hot dog and hamburger buns without HFCS that my family would like.

I found it at my Kroger, too, a couple of months ago. I bought one as a treat and the next time I went to get one, it wasn't there. I keep occasionally checking and then last week it was back. It was "only" $1.39 at my Kroger though. They do carry other sodas from Mexico with sugar vs. HFCS but I haven't tried any of them.

Sara Lee stopped adding HFCS to its Hearty & Delicious line of breads, thankfully, as DS loves their honey whole wheat. Now if Sara Lee would just get rid of the HFCS in its hamburger buns ...

For those of you who crave soda, Whole fo*ds makes an inexpensive line that uses cane sugar....

When my daughter thinks I'm evil, :stir: once in a while, I let her have one of these.

Generally, we live on IZZE if we need a sweet bubbly fix: it's just juice and carbonated water. ( We discovered these at Star*ucks, but now order from Am*zon grocery)

It's difficult to avoid hfcs, but worth it in the long run! Big corporations will never admit fault...they'll cite environmental factors, heredity, or anything else to avoid admitting they engeneer products to be addictive and care little for thir ultimate effect on consumers. :sad2: They will say we don't have to buy their products if we do not choose to, thus making us complicit in our own demise.

Everything is just a series of coincidences...not proveable....Remember the rotovirus vaccine that gave kids ulcers?

I have yet to find a good hot dog bun, but Target, in the bakery are has their own hamburger buns that are fantastic! They are just basic label, no archer farms or anything, and they are HUGE! I have to cut part of the middle out for myself cuz they are too big, but they are really really soft and yummy. They are usually $1.99 a bag at my store. They have white and very light wheat versions.

My fault for the lazy posting. I should have posted "I'm not convinced that chemically altered high fructose corn syrup is the debil."

Sorry for the miscommunication.

The blog link is http://www.stophfcs.com/blog.html, the website link is http://www.stophfcs.com, the list link is http://www.stophfcs.com/list.html

Hope that helps!

Thanks! They worked!

I checked out my cupboard last night, looking for any foods that had HFCS. I was actually surprised that there wasn't much in there that had it. Of course it was in the ketchup, BBQ sauce, and Worcestershire sauce, but the only other thing I found it in was the Kellogg's Raisin Bran. I was shocked that it wasn't listed on any of my salad dressing bottles or spaghetti sauce jars.

While I was happy to see that we're already eating foods that generally don't have this stuff in it, I can't help thinking that some manufacturers call it something different.

There is a good documentary film on this topic... It is called King Corn. Check it out if you have a chance.

We just found some ARnold's bread that even says it is HFCS free! Woth a try. We just started looking at this ingrediant and we are eliminating it. Ketchup will be the hardest, but we have a trader joes so we will go there yet again this week!

Trader joes has lots of food without HFCS. They seem to use a lot of cane sugar instead!

I have been eliminating that for my DD. I eat really healthy so I didn't have to really worry about it but it was in a lot of her snack foods. I just slowly replaced the item with the HFCS with something that didn't have it. I allowed me DD to keep one item with it. Once we finished something it got replaced with an organic version.

She goes to a Deli with her Dad a lot and the big treat is Chocolate Milk, I sent them with the Hersheys Choc syrup, it is the light version and doesn't have HFCS in it, they put her name on it and she even gets Chocolate Milk without it.

I am not finatical but I figure the more that I work to eliminate it the better her health is going to be. Once I learned how bad it was I just had to do something about it.

Heinz sells an organic ketchup in the regular ketchup aisle. It tastes exactly the same as regular Heinz! Everyone in my house eats it without blinking an eye.

I have a tough question! I am trying to eliminate HFCS. I noticed in some articles that English Muffins has it. But I looked at the ingredients and it is not listed. Does HFCS have another name? Do they hide it and I am just not reading it? What else should I really try to eliminate...I know hydrogenated oils.

It depends on the English Muffins, some brands do and some do not. The ones I buy do not, I think they are Thomas brand? I can't remember.

I was looking at ketchup at the store this morning. Del Monte didn't have the HFCS, but did have corn syrup listed. (I never know what to think about corn syrup since I've found different brands of corn syrup that contain HFCS.)

I sent an e-mail to a company regarding one of their products that I like. I commented that I only choose one of their flavors because the others contain HFCS. The response I got was that they do understand that some consumers prefer products without HFCS, that they hope I'll continue to use that one flavor. Then they referred me to www.hfcsfacts.com if I'd like to learn more about the subject. This site is run by The Corn Refiners Association. They state that, "HFCS is made from corn, a natural grain product. HFCS contains no artificial or synthetic ingredients or color additives and meets the Food and Drug Administration’s requirements for use of the term 'natural'." Not that I believe that spin. The mere fact that other countries have companies make their versions of products without the stuff says a lot to me.
