Mission Space... Will I get sick?

Ok... I really want to try Mission Space, but I'm nervous... In general, I don't enjoy spinning rides, and it seems to be getting worse as I get older... I mean, I sometimes get icky feeling after those giant swing rides you see at some amusement parks and carnivals... And I definitely had a bad experience on a tilt-o-whirl once... So will I hate Mission Space? I'd really love to try it, it sounds like a really cool ride, but I don't want to ruin the rest of my morning at Epcot with motion sick feelings...

Thanks for any advice!!!

I was nervous about MS too, but it was great. I followed the instructions to look straight ahead at all times, and I never even felt like it was spinning. The effect feels more like you are being pushed back into your seat (like during take-off). It is definitely NOT like a Tilt-A-Whirl or even the Tea Cups as far as spinning goes. I think body wars and the star wars ride are much more likely to make me sick.

I have the same concern. I think I'll send DH on first and then if he can stand it, maybe I'll try it. I get so motion sick. I will definitely be taking some sort of over the counter medication with me.

That was totally my backup plan in case I totally wimped out!! The boyfriend doesn't mind spinny rides and he really wants to go... at least I know there's a single riders line and won't feel so bad sending him in alone...

If you do what Disney tells you then you won't get sick. Alot of problems occur when people lean forward and look around. Keep focused on the screen and keep your head back and you will be fine! I loved MS and will do it again and again I am sure! I was a little disappointed with the way it ends but overall, it is awesome! At least try it once! Again, you won't get sick if you follow their instructions! Have fun!!

I felt a little sick on MS, similar to what I feel on other spinny rides. My sister doesn't normally feel sick and she did for about an hour after MS.

I'm going later this month with my DH. As he ages he feels sicker going on spinny rides, but I think he will try MS and I will tell him to follow the directions closely. It's a neat ride and hopefully he will take the chance and try it.

After my second pregnancy I suddenly could no longer go on any spinning rides--tilt-a-whirl, teacups, octopus, scrambler. Rode them my entire life, but now one encounter means migraines and nausea for the rest of the day.

I rode Mission Space without any problems (other than dread from seeing the centrifuge from the outside.). The look straight ahead tip certainly helped. I was very worried about how DD7 was doing, but still didn't look.

(Turned out she was fine; went back on it with her older brother--and went in the singles line to get on faster!)

So my verdict is a thumbs up.

However I went on Primeval Hurl, ummm, Whirl, in the burning sun, and that was a mistake that cost me several hours and sent me to First Aid to lie down in the dark, cool space. STAY AWAY FROM IT.

I was worried about this as well, but found the ride wasn't that bad. I could hardly tell that we were spinning at all. I actually felt sicker after I got off of Astro Orbiter.

Another vote for following the directions and you should be OK..... DON'T close your eyes, look straight ahead and if you start feeling queasy you might try gulping big breaths of air. I'm not fond of spinning (no teacups for me) but love everything else and I was fine on it. Wouldn't recommend doing it right after a big meal if you're concerned though.
BTW - if anyone's an HP employee (they "sponsor" the ride) if you take your employee ID you can get into a special lounge that overlooks the ride line. It's a really nice perk - my husband and son waited there while I went on the ride....

Thanks everyone, for the (mostly) comforting words... I think I'll try the ride and make sure to follow the directions exactly... It sounds like such a cool ride... and I'm so excited that I'll be able to ride it TOMORROW!!! :)

Agree with the majority ... follow the directions and you should be fine. Just don't look outside or lean forward and your equilibrium will remain balanced. I am not one for spinning, at all, and I enjoyed MS completely. Drop me from 10000 feet and I'm fine, but put me on the teacups and it's going to get ugly- quick!

I'll add one more voice to follow the directions to "look straight ahead at all times" & you should be fine.

I was a bit concerned when I saw what the ride looked like from the outside & when I got inside & saw the barf bags by the seats, I thought "uh oh." I even picked up a bag & put it in my lap to have it ready. I just made sure to keep my eyes focused on the screen & I had no problem at all...and I loved the ride!

For the past several months I have been reading every post I could possibly find about Mission Space because I wanted to know exactly what it was like before going on it. Well here is the conclusion I've come to: It seems like it depends on the individual how he/she will react to it and there is no blanket statement that can be made as to whether someone else will react in the same way. I have read where people who always get motion sick on spinning rides were perfectly fine and those who never have a problem were sick for hours.

Just follow the rules they tell you exactly and try not to be too nervous...I have a feeling that part of the physical reaction is related to the nervous buildup; people get themselves so worked up! (I probably will, too, even though I'll try not to!)

I've read that they blow cool air on your face which should help you feel better. One tip I'm going to try is to ride Mission Space at the end of the day. That way, if you get sick or feel queasy at least it won't ruin your day at Epcot. Hopefully you'll be able to recuperate by morning!

Good luck everyone!

I get motion sickness very quickly but I rode MS and had no problem at all. I followed the directions about not closing your eyes and keeping your head back and it worked.

If someone had not told me ahead of time I would have never guessed I was spinning at all.

I also took the precaution to ride it later in the day incase I felt ill so it would not ruin the whole day. ::yes::

I was worried also because of a bad experience with a tilt-o-whirl at the state fair last year. It was always my favorite ride and now all of a sudden spinning rides make me feel sick. So when I rode Mission Space and my stomach didn't do as much as a flip flop I rode it a couple of more times to make certain. I think looking straight ahead and the air blowing in your face to keep you from feeling to enclosed does the trick!! Have fun!

Yep! I did, well not totally, but was sure I would and felt that way for 2 hours.

I rode MS in July 2003 before it officially opened. It is an absolutely terrific ride that unfortunately lasted a little too long for me. I was well-versed in ride strategy from this wonderful board. I kept my head back, and my eyes glued to the TV screen. Even with those precautions I started to feel headachey toward the end of the ride, but luckily was able to exit the ride and make it to the ladies room before I was actually sick. I routinely ride RnR with no problems, but MS did me in. It truly is an amazing ride, but for me, once is enough.

WDWFAN9 - maybe they "tweeked" the ride before official opening. Several of us were talking after we got off, and agreed that had the ride gone on just a little longer, we'd have had problems. So maybe they learned from you :teeth:
If so, thanks ;) !

My husband can usually handle all the rides gets sick everytime he rides MS. He says it takes him a good day to feel "right" again.

Just a quick report from The World...

Rode Mission Space today... I followed the advice of Disney and everyone here on the boards and looked straight ahead with my head back against the seat and kept my eyes open the whole time... and I didn't get sick... but I didn't really enjoy it all that much either. There was definite potential for feeling ill. After the ride started, all I could think about was when it was going to end. It, thankfully was short... I'm glad I tried it, but I won't be doing it again anytime soon!!!

Back to having fun!!!!
