Mickey Mouse arm/wand removed from Epcot

Oh what a great day to be an Epcot fan.

Anyone think this thing may be down by the last week of September? That would be soooo Awesome.

I just want my daughter who can't ride her favorite ride (Spaceship Earth) to at least see the ball the way it should be.

Apparently the folks who own the real Chinese Theater don't like people taking pics in front of a very good fake--licensing/copyright issues, etc. That's what I've heard, anyway. Don't know how true that is; they apparently didn't mind for quite a while. But it may have recently changed owners or something. I don't know.

That's what I had heard - the ownership of the real Chinese theater changed hands, and with it, the rights for Disney to use its likeness in any marketing materials went away. Not sure why they didn't require them to tear the external facade down, maybe there was some kind of compromise.

I had not heard that....thank you for the information. It really is a shame if that's the reason. :confused3

I still don't like that hat there though. If something had to be put up to shield the front of the theater, a nice grove of palm trees would have looked better! :)

Or maybe remodel it too mkae it look like an old 40's style movie theater and move the Hat to the Animation Courtyard.

Something along these lines

I liked it too but I also liked the gold decorations on Cinderella Castle....The castle just looks so plain now, and I imagine that SE will look plain as well. :confused3

that could seem too much like the Pantages theater at Universal though

To the previous posters who talked about removing the ugly tombstones, um I mean, the Leave a Legacy structures, from Epcot, I read just this week that the Leave a Legacy will be no more. They are discontinuing the program and you could contact Disney to find out where your tile will be.

I don't think that program took off like Disney thought it would. More than half of the structures a/k/a tombstones are empty.

I think I read that on www.allearsnet.com. I'll have to go back and look.

I was thinking the same thing about my trip in mid-September. I really like that ride, as well. BUT at least you'll get to see the newly revamped Haunted Mansion!

you cant buy any more tiles but no word on when/where they might move tombstones, if at all

Oh yeah. Really looking forward to that. Although I've heard Rock and Roller Coaster will be closed and possibly the Little Mermaid in addition to Spaceship Earth.

Yes, that's correct. So the tombstones may eventually be removed. Nobody knows when that could be, though. (Or if they do, they're not telling.)

The Leave A Legacy program, first launched at Epcot in Fall 1999, has been discontinued as of June 16, 2007. The current display of more than 550,000 tiles at the main entrance of Epcot will remain for the time being. The Leave A Legacy Locator station will be relocated to the Camera Center underneath Spaceship Earth. If you need to get information about your Leave A Legacy tile from home, contact the following email address: WDW.EC.legacy@disney.com

Yay Yay Yay! This is great news! The wand was out of place on SSE and had outworn its welcome a long time ago. Now onto removing the tombs in front of SSE!

WHAT??!!!! :scared1: I know that it went down unexpectedly for a couple of days last month (technical problems I believe), and people were upset. However, it was back up and running shortly. And the FASTPASS is going down this month from the 12-17th. But that's ALL I've read. PLEASE tell me where you heard this information so that we can discount it.

It won't let me do it, but it was on the wdwmagic site under the Disney section.

Anyone heard anything about the rehab of Spaceship earth? Are they making big changes, updating, or just some new paint? I love this ride, but have gotten pretty tired of it stopping once or twice ride in recent year. Hope this changes, but I wouldn't want to see a lot inside change.

So glad that spacehip earth will be back to normal- without the wand.. and I'm really excited to have the leave a legacy stuff gone!

So happy about this for...

1. just plain happy it'll be gone

2. it will be finished by the time I'm there in Nov, so my pictures won't have a big ole crane &/or scaffolding in them

I don't know what you mean by the "disney section" as the website is devoted to Disney  Maybe you meant something else. BUT I did check out the "rehabs & closures" page and there was nothing of the sort for September.

I started thinking about this a bit more. (trust me though I STILL want it off!)

Some opinions may have to do with how one FIRST viewed it. I came years ago before the wand - and the "golf ball" was so exciting to see from my hotel room - it was the mark of Epcot. The design was so futuristic looking, at that time, it was breathtaking to see it off in the distance.

Fast forward to people who have only seen it with the wand. It might look incomplete without it...

Either way, in my opinion, it totally changed the look of the structure.

Not the case for me! I saw it several times without the hand/wand/sign. I like the hand/wand/sign but I also like it without it.

I'll be interested to see if they have down by the time we get there in late Sept. I would assume that they are going to want it down completely by the start of F&WF.

:sad1: Looks as though we will have pictures of a crane for our upcoming trip. (2 weeks). Looks like I wil have to break down and buy a photo editing program.

I sent you a PM. Hopefully now you can get it to work.
