Michelle Obama...

Again, I'm not going to argue the meaning of it, as I simply do not think it is relevant, and the only reason anybody would is to use it to smear the campaign (completely regardless of the fact that there is no there there to smear with). We've got very serious problems in this country and very serious differences of opinion on how they need be addressed. Going off on tangential nonsense like this just distracts from the real issues for nothing more than the pleasure of those few that enjoy the political bloodsport when played at it's most disgusting.

If she didn't inject herself into the campaign supporting his ideologies, then I agree, her comments would probably be irrelevant.

Surely you remember the "dust up" over Mama Bush's "let them eat cake" comments. Here's a woman that hasn't been in the political limelight for close to 20 years. What she says today should be just as irrelevant as it was when she was on the campaign trail or first lady. Or not? I guess it's a matter of perspective. Right?

Honestly, so what? Her poorly-chosen words will affect his presidency how? Exactly how?

I believe the world is flat

Still don't think anything could be taken out of context? :teeth:

Yeah, I remember the comments, and - while certainly dumb - they had no impact one way or the other about how I felt about Georgie's campaign. Believe me...just because the press gets the bit in its teeth and runs with a story doesn't mean I think it is relevant to anything at all. This is just as irrelevant as Laura's car wreck when she was younger. It has nothing at all to do with his candidacy.

Obviously it isn't "so what?" to you when you follow that with "poorly-chosen".

And it's not that it will "how" it'll affect it but it provides insight to their ideologies.

Her "idealogy" is that blacks have suffered a considerable amount in this country. Who doesn't believe that? :confused3

We're talking about two things. Her thesis and her recent comments. Are they connected?

Not that I know of, but I missed the transition from one meaningless comment to the other. :teeth:

As far as I'm concerned, the "deeper meaning" behind her "proud of this country" comments is simple: she thinks this country can do one heckuva lot better than it's been doing in the recent past.

I don't think it was taken out of context, but I think it was a "slip of the tongue", an innocent blunder. But what a blunder it was!

Nah...the "taken out of context" comment was about the thesis she wrote in college, and the fact that people are taking one sentence out of a rather lengthy paper and critiquing it. The "proud of America" thing was a different topic. I just missed the transition between the two. :teeth:

I haven't been proud of my country for a while now. Does that mean I should leave? Isn't that an allowable emotion in an elected leader's wife? Should she stand there with a blank stare and wide smile on her face while waving a flag?

Am I missing something here? Why is this such a big deal?

I find it difficult to think that an American can not find something to be proud of in this country and that is why I find Michelle Obama's comment so appalling.

If you can't find satisfaction in your politicians, then take a look around you and see all the regular folks who work every day to make this country great and instill pride in our daily lives. For example, how many times have we seen police or firefighters risk their lives and go beyond the call of duty to save someone else or watched a nurse work an extra shift to tend your health needs. America is filled with folks that should make us very proud.

This country is made up of many wonderful people performing extraordinary acts every day. Perhaps we have been bless with so many freedoms that we forget how truly lucky we are, but a simple look around should make anyone feel very thankful to be an American and instill great pride in this country. It is sad that in her whole adult life Michelle Obama has never had pride in any of America's people.

DisneyMom - I think your post is very valid and heartfelt.

Me too, :thumbsup2

No, I don't think it's legitimate. I think it's nonsense. Disneymom is objecting to one sentence in a thesis that was how many pages long? I mean...give me a freaking break. If people went back over the college papers of just about ANYBODY, they'd be sure to find a statement that they could TAKE OUT OF CONTEXT - just as DisneyMom did - and make a big deal out of. I'm sorry, but I think the notion that anybody should give a rat's derriere about what Michelle Obama wrote in her thesis 20 years ago is completely ridiculous.

.

Why do I think this would be not be so if it was about Cindy McCain .. :teeth: :teeth: And, wow - I'm just amazed that you are unable to comprehend that someone else could be offended by this statement. :sad2:

I could make the statement that I believe the world is flat and give 95 pages thesis on why I believe that. Still doesn't change the fact that I believe the world is flat. The whole point of a thesis is to explore a specific topic in detail. So not much in it can be taken out of context.

Again....I think she meant....she has never been AS proud.
If we were to pick apart what Bush says....and what he is trying to say....
We could be here all day.

Ok, but the reason I was confused is because on her thread the other day you indicated that you would have rather the campaign just went ahead and released it now. I was getting a different vibe in the post I questioned you on here. Are you changing your mind and now think it would be best if it was not released??

It is not my job to make assumptions about her comments or to try to second guess what she meant. She is a Harvard educated woman and an accomplished attorney. She is not new to the political scene since her husband has been involved in state politics and has served as a US Senator and is she is used to being in the spotlight. It was hardly a slip of the tongue since it was repeated again. If her husband is elected, I certainly hope she doesn't make this kind of error in any sensitive foreign situations.

On the other hand, Bush has spent 8 years with people picking apart everything he says. I don't see anything wrong with that. Politicians and those that represent them should be accountable for their words.

I remember years back when Barbara Bush called Mrs. Clinton a *itch.

Little correction: Barbara Bush, about vice-presidential candidate Geraldine Ferraro: I can't say it, but it rhymes with rich. (Barbara Bush later apologized for calling Ferraro a witch -- October 15, 1984, New York Times)

BTW, I think Michelle Obama would be an atrocious First Lady after her idiotic comment and I don't care where she got her degree and what she does for a living. It was stupid, plain and simple. Obama knew what she was saying and she was pandering to her audience.
I'm a Democrat and I hope Hillary gets the nomination because now there's no way in Hades that I'd vote for Barack Obama.

WVREVY, can the Obama's do no wrong in your eyes? It seems as if many in the Obama camp feel that way and that is what has turned me off to them (him). At this point, if he wins the nomination, I will not vote in November.*

*I may change my mind in the future. lol

there's no way in Hades that I would allow a candidate's spouse to affect my decision on who I vote for. I wasn't particulary happy with Bill Clinton's behavior during the SC primaries, but if Hillary wins the nomination I'll still happily vote for her.

I'm not voting for Bill Clinton, Michelle Obama or Cindy McCain, just as I didn't vote for Laura Bush, Hillary Clinton or Barbara Bush.

That's one think great about the country- you feel one way and I feel another and it's ok.
