Michelle Obama...

Oh, I do. I lurk in freeperville all the time (I joined and posted once and immediately got banned - LOL!). There are just some perspectives I refuse to hear or read. Malkin, Coulter, Limbaugh, Savage come to mind.

I enjoy reading opposing views, but only those presented in a reasonable manner. None of the above, IMO, meets that criteria.

ITA. Just because I might listen to Glenn Beck but refuse to put up with the hysterical screeching of Coulter or Limbaugh doesn't make me any less informed.

Absolutely.....the day after the election...will be business as usual.

Republicans like to through the word "FEAR" around.
Oh if you don't vote republican to "protect" your country....we will
be vulnerable to another attack.

That is fear talking.....unfortunately....most americans can't tell the
difference....ie...the past 8yrs.
Kerri
Well, I do think we will be vulnerable to another attck after the election.

I think that the new administration will be "tested", probably within its first year.

I haven't been proud of my country for a while now. Does that mean I should leave? Isn't that an allowable emotion in an elected leader's wife? Should she stand there with a blank stare and wide smile on her face while waving a flag?

Am I missing something here? Why is this such a big deal?

There is a very big difference here. She said this is the FIRST time in her life she's been proud of her country. The woman is 44 years old and this is the FIRST time?

No, that isn't what she said.

While I don't think it was taken out of context I don't think she really thought through what her words really meant. I don't think she truly meant the words she has never been proud of her country. She should have worded it way different but I didn't take it as that big of a deal.

Funny..I heard the word "adult" in there. Did you miss that part? :confused3

PAH-LEEZE!

So what are you saying? From 0-17 she was proud, but for the last 26 years she wasn't?:rotfl2:

Wow. Thanks for the youtube clip. I had not seen this yet.

I think she made a very bold statement there.

How could she be 44 yo and for the first time be very proud? I hope that it just came out wrong and that she meant it differently than it sounded.

How could throwing in the word "adult" make her statement any better?! :sad2: :confused3

Of course, she is not running for President, he is, so we should remember that. I have not heard everything Bill has said during Hillary's campaign but I'm sure he's screwed up also. What about McCain's wife?

I think I know why DH has never run for President. ;) :rotfl:

Yep...I heard it. Which makes the statement worse IMHO.

Really? In the last 20 years - since most people I know really consider their time since graduating college as their "adult" lives - I would argue that there has been very little to be really proud about as an American. Yes, there have been a few things that stand out. But other than just general pride in our country and the freedoms we hold (or used to hold), this country has become more and more divided along party lines. Politics has become a ridiculously dirty business, and Michelle seems to be commenting on that fact, along with the fact that her husband isn't running that kind of a campaign.

Am I surprised that it's being spun as if she's somehow anti-American? Of course not. That's what some people do best, and it's the exact kind of nonsense she is commenting on. That said, it was a poorly worded commentary on the state of cross-party relations in this country. She set herself up for this kind of ridiculous attack, which makes it her fault for not forseeing how it would be spun in the media and by conservatives. But that's all it was.

So? I'm 37 years old and I'm hard-pressed to feel pride in this country. I am impressed at the acts of particular people or particular organizations, but on the whole the last 37 years in this country have not exactly been our most glorious ones, IMO. Does that make me a traitor? Shall I pack my bags for Guantanamo Bay now?

That's sort of the whole point of "America" isn't it? That we aren't obligated to have mindless, lockstep pride in our nation?

My husband has served in the military his entire adult life. He is much more conservative than I. We disagree on many things. But nothing makes him prouder of the job he does than the fact that his wife can be critical of her government.

:confused3 Sorry you feel that way.

May I join you at Gitmo - 39 years old here and I am not proud of this country either. Maybe we could get a discount rate since there are so many of us!

So are you saying you haven't been proud to be an American ONE TIME in the last 19 years?

No one said she should be walking around wrapped in the American flag singing God Bless America. Saying it's the FIRST time she's been proud though are some pretty strong words coming from a woman who has been married to a man who has been politician since 1996. She wasn't proud to be an American he was elected to the State Senate? She wasn't proud to be an American when he was elected to the U.S. Senate?

Well...He did beat Alan Keyes for the Senate. I think Spongebob would probably win that race by 10 or 15 points. ;)

As I said, she should probably have said it's the most proud she's ever been, or most proud in her adult life, or whatever. Frankly, I think it's being made into a much bigger deal than it actually is by people that want to tear down her husband. That being the case, it's not really worth being all that concerned about.

Did she really say that she was proud to be an American for the first time in her life? Or is it being taken out of context? I hope that a woman who has had so much American Opportunity her entire life was proud of her country well before last week:scratchin

:

I haven't read the other post, but yep that is what she said. I am sure others will say it was taken out of context and give her excuses or reasons she said what she said. but the bottom line is she said exactly those words, that she is proud of America for the first time in her adult life!
