Magic Band Is Tracking Me And I Don't Like It

I find this new dimension very creepy.....much too "Big Brother-y for me".

This isn't really new it has always been about of the magicbands. Most CMs just ignore the information though. I think recently they have gone back to training CMs to read what information MBs provide and use it for guest interaction.

Also, you can still get an old fashioned room key to use. I actually had to get one on my last visit because I left my room without my MB, but luckily with my ID. Front desk made a room key and it now shows up as a "Magic Band" in MDE. I meant to try if I told works as my ticket for parks (I think it should), but forgot about it. The room keys are passive and short distance. much less tracking. And you could even get a rfid-safe wallet to carry it around in.
I was actually thinking about this. Is there an option to pick a "card" instead of a MB on the MDE?

I do understand and appreciate technology, even at my old age, but it still is creepy to me. Guess it's my generation.

When the info first came out on how they'd be able to create more personal interactions that was my immediate feeling too. Creepy. I don't love it nor even like it but they don't seem to have an opt out option so it's either accept or not go as far as I can tell. Personally I've enjoyed Disney just fine without signs posting my name or characters greeting me as I walk up.

I have had a couple emails in the past that showed tracking. I do not particularly care for the tracking but live with it. However, the day I get the email that asks how I liked the particular cleanliness of one of the restrooms is the day I may lodge a serious complaint.

Since the cards are listed, I guess you can. Plus the card is the fall back proof you have the AP. Well, I guess your photo ID is really what you need.

Heh, heh. I can see it now, used in Defense: "No, officer, I wasn't anywhere near the scene of the stated crime. I was at WDW. Really. Yes, I can prove it. Phone Disney and ask them for my MB tracking history." Yep, that out to be solid evidence in a court of law, right?
you'd still have to prove that YOU were wearing the magic band and not your accomplice!

Really no difference between that and your smartphone these days but I agree it's annoying.

I don like the magic band cause you can spend so much without even realizing you spent anything

Just seems a little too personal.

Agreed.

Same.

Havinnaimeone or something greet me by name because a computer read something I'm wearing is even LESS personal to me than no greeting.

How does that work? You know there's a bill at the end, you know how you'll pay for it. How do you not mentally add it up or deduct it from your budget mentally as you go?

And how is it so different from using the keycards to pay?

But really how does one disassociate themselves from the fact that they are spending money with a band or keycard vs cash or a credit card? I just don't get that.

Trip Advisor tracks you...based on what you have searched for. I get e-mails daily about "now is the perfect time to plan your trip to Magic Kingdom" or "Ready for fun in the sun? Well here are more vacation rentals near Makaha for you", etc. It's because I went to the Magic Kingdom attraction page on TripAdvisor and in September we went to Hawaii and stayed at a vacation rental so we did a lot of researching beforehand. Basically anytime I search for something within the Trip Advisor app or on their website I seem to get an e-mail back from them and I keep getting those e-mails long after I stopped searching for that place/attraction/hotel, etc.

It's annoying to get the e-mails but I'm sure in their Terms and Service I agreed to promotional contact from them based on x,y,z.

Also Facebook has been recently suggesting writing a review everytime it sees I either checked-in or was tagged at some place or had my GPS on and searched for some place.

In my day to day life I'm getting tracked by way more things than I care to think about.

If it bothers you so much, take off the magic band and wrap it in foil.

Or look super dignified and splurge for a nifty Farady bag for $30 on Amazon:thumbsup2

This subject only bothers me cuz Im bringing a dear friend for his first visit in 5 mos and he is VERY anti establishment. Ive JUST warmed him up to wearing the band and haven't told him yet about the finger scanning :sad1: As of 2015 they weren't avidly tracking and soliciting this hard; as in sending emails just cuz you visited a location. I HAD to list him as one of my DVC guests and he may want to link his CC, but he will FREAK out if he knows he's being monitored this way...shucks...like Im already gonna have to explain the fingerprint getting transferred to binary to ease his mind, but theres NO way I can say they're not watching you if he gets an email saying "HEY, we just saw you in the bathroom, how was the paper?!" What do I do?! Just make sure he doesn't link anything that has his email attached to it????

Have him get a plastic card instead of the band. Still won't stop their transaction tracking which is done through information available when people use their CC so unless he pays everything in cash everywhere he goes he has people following him already.

yeah,I actually have his ticket (card) already as I'm planning everything. I mentioned this to him as an option and maybe if I present it that way he'll know that I did everything I can to keep him away from the Mickey "Man" and if he uses his credit card somewhere on property than thats his own choice. :confused3

Yup. I keep on getting notices on Facebook on my cell phone to review places that I have been even though I didn't officially "check in" on the app. It's annoying.

I responded to a post last week about someone who wanted to buy MBs for her "husband's (VERY) tech-phobic aunt and uncle". I have a feeling they are going to freak out the first time they ride Space Mountain and their name pops up on one of the screens on the way out of the ride.

Yeah just use the ticket you have and if he uses his cc or anything to buy something that is on him.

Well it's not so much that I can't keep track . There been many studies that suggest that making payments easier to transact result in incressed sales . That's why they do it . The main reason is because people don't pay "feel it " as much since they aren't actually paying for it at the POS .

No difference with a card but when I had the card I could put everything else I needed with my card now I have this magic band that magically does everything I need I can't put cash and all my other items on the band . There is not room after all the sliders
