LOST SEASON 3 **Official** Discussion/Speculation Thread (No Spoilers)

Wasn't there an instance in Season 1 where Locke comes face to face with the monster and nothing happened? They never showed the monster but just Locke standing there staring up at it?

That was Eko in Season 2 that had the stare down with Smokey.

Yes,Locke had a staredown with the monster in season one. He stared up at it with almost a smile on his face. We did not see the monster but he did.

Exactly. I don't think we had seen the smoke monster yet at that point. So, I assumed it was the polar bear or the thing that got the pilot that he was looking at. And that was when Locke had his epiphany about the island.

and Who is the new couple?! Is it like Star Trek where the new "Ensign Johnson" shows up only to get killed off right away??? :sad2:

Ah, yes, the red-shirted expendable crewmen. Ensign Tim Porary.

Ooops, sorry, listening to too many episodes of the Radio Adventures of Dr. Floyd!! :)

In the pilot episode, on their first night on the island, there was a big something in the jungle that made a metallic roaring sound and shook the trees. Then there was the thing that pulled the pilot out of the plane and then chased Jack, Kate and Charlie through the jungle. Finally, there was something that Locke confronted in the jungle, while hunting boar. Everyone assumed he was dead.

Are all these "monsters" the smoke monster or something else???

All the Tallies aren't dead. Roses' husband is still alive, can't remember his name.

Bernard.

He's like background at this point. They never show him or Rose any more. Hopefully they will as time goes on.

The whole spoiler thread v non-spoiler thread frustrates me a lot. But I did want to mention in case people weren't aware of the podcasts that Damon and Carleton do...you can get them on abc.com or iTunes. I won't post any spoilers but a lot of the questions that have been asked here and things people are saying they are frustrated about have been addressed on the podcast.

I guess I'll have to start watching the podcasts from now on. I really don't want any spoilers, and I want to have my questions addressed within the context of the show. I shouldn't need to watch a separate broadcast to find out what is going on. I think that the creators need to realize that not all fans of the show are looking at those type of sites.

I want to love this show, really I do, but I'm getting frustrated. For some reason I don't like the new couple and just see it taking away from getting more involved with the "orginal" cast. The first seasons were so much better because they were more of a group but now everyone seems so split up and hard to keep track of. IMO they didn't need to bring a new girl in to replace Kate when we still have Jin and Claire. When is the last time we got more than a passing flash of them on-screen? Maybe I would have been happier if they didn't focus soooo much on the Others. Jack seems to be the only survivor shown every week but his character has seemed to change to the point where I just find him annoying.

On a positive note, the previews look good for next week. I think it's the last episode before their break which should mean another big cliff hanger. It would be nice if we could at least get everyone back to one island, together again but I don't see that happening. Come on writers...don't let us down!!!

I think it's time for me to check the spoilers!

Well they don't really spoil stuff....they do a lot of clarification because people stopped taking a lot of stuff with Lost at face value. People are thinking too hard about what it all means instead of sitting back and just watching the story unfold.

It is their show...they want people to watch so anything they really 'spoil' must not matter much in their minds.

They have said season 3 is about the others.
That once you are dead on the island you are really dead. Yes characters can be seen in flashback or dreams but they won't show up alive.
They've also addressed the 'issue' of people not talking to eachother. They said to assume that they ARE talking to eachother...we just aren't seeing it onscreen.

Someone asked about Penny and her workers in the cold climate - that is something that has been addressed. I won't spoil it but they've answered that.

They take a lot of viewer questions from ABC.com

You don't HAVE to watch but I think it helps.

I am devastated that they killed Eko-- I truly loved his character and his story line. I don't understand how he could be 'stronger' than the Smoke before, but now it beats the stuffing out of him and he is dead!!?? I'm starting to think it is the "get arrested for DWI, get killed off on Lost" thing going on.
Honolulu- September 27- Akinnuoye-Agbaje, who portrays Dr. Eko on the hit drama, was arrested Sept. 2 for driving without a license and disobeying a police officer.

However, the charges were dropped Tuesday after the actor's attorney produced his license and the state failed to prove the other charge, the Honolulu Star-Bulletin reported Wednesday.

The "Lost" cast has kept Hawaii's courts hopping with traffic violations.

Actresses Michelle Rodriguez and Cynthia Watros were arrested within minutes of each other last year and wound up pleading guilty to charges of drunken driving.

Six other members of the ensemble cast have been cited for traffic violations but were not arrested.
And those 6 are not dead yet, are they...??

Speaking of Spoilers-- at the end of last Season, my Yahoo mail E Online had this header-- "Looks Like Getting Picked Up By Hawaii 5-0 Gets You Kicked Off the Island". And I had Tivoed the show and not watched it yet. So of course I knew Anna Lucia and Libby would die! Of course it didn't say spoiler alert until after the big headline. Gee, ya think the headline didn't give something away??

I also agree with those who do not like the new couple. I don't care for them at all--they are infiltrators to the cast! I think there are plenty of original cast members to keep this going--unless they need more bodies and don't want to totally alienate all of us?

On the whole Ben thing--I agree it is really interesting to hear the coincidental part about the crash timing-- but then one of my favorite quotes is, "Coincidence is when God laughs". I like MyGoofy26's thoughts--

I think the show is going to get into how interconnected everybody on the planet is (think 6 degrees of separation) and it could have been any set of survivors and there would have been links in their past. Obviously this theory doesn't cover the whole plot of the show. . . but I have this feeling that Dharma will be studying the "global community" as we find out more. Getting into the whole "there's a reason why everything happens" I think we may find out that it's true. . . it's just a matter of digging back far enough to find the ties. And most people will never figure out their connections to everyone else. . . but I'm wondering if those files they have on the survivors do make those connections.

Any thoughts on who the heck the guy with the eye patch is? Kinda weird that he knew he was being watched and covered up the camera.

RadioNate - can you post this over on the spoiler thread? (I can't believe there aren't ANY posts since last night's show.) For the life of me, I can't remember what was said about Penny and the artic guys.

And yes, what's up with the guy with eye patch? Is he with Ben and the Others? Or is he someone else? And how did he know he was being watched? I guess when Sayid activated the camera, maybe it beeped or something to alert that guy that it was on.

I'm sad to see Eko die. I'm just hoping that next week we get some resolution of what's going on with Kate, Sawyer and Jack. I can certainlyee Jack operating on Ben, but I can't see him deliberately killing him. Unless Blondie is assisting during the operation and SHE does it but blames Jack. They've played so many mind games, it's hard to know who to trust.

I'm still kind of "bleh" about the show this season. It seems to be moving awfully slow and they're not telling us much. Just beating up Sawyer. Ok, last night they beat up Eko for a change.

I wonder if the thing with the smoke monster and Eko was because of his saying that he is not sorry for the things he did in his life. When he first saw it, it showed things in his life and I wonder if because he did not repent the "monster" punished him.

And the camera's have a light on the bottom so the patched guy would know someone was looking at him. :magnify:

I think this is where the powers that be can't win. For two seasons people begged to know who those freaky people in the jungle are and now they're starting to introduce us to them and people (not directing this to you personally - it's a very common complaint. . your post just made a good intro for it) complain that we're not seeing enough of the survivors.

This is a HUGE ensemble cast, and you just can't tell everyone's stories in 42 minutes once a week. They're naturally going to have to let some regulars slide into the background from time to time otherwise we're stuck with season 1 where they rotated backstories of a dozen regulars and don't get any further.

The producers said they KNEW people would think that about Ana Lucia and Libby, but that it REALLY was not the case. In season 1, they were looking specifically for an hispanic woman to to be the leader of the tailies. They were told they needed to take a look at Michelle, but she had said she was only interested in doing one season....she didn't want to lock herself into a long series. After her arrest, they called her to LA for a meeting to discuss how her character would die, and she made a comment like, "Well....I've already settled into Hawaii pretty well", but they had already written the next few episodes. They pretty much commented that it was too late for her to change her mind, and they said she took it really well.

As far as Eko, I think he was afraid this time because "his brother" had told him it was time to confess (i.e. his time to die). I also think that when he knew his "brother" was not his brother, then he knew it was futile to resist. It would be interesting to know what he saw while the smoke was around him. When the producers said we had seen the smoke monster all season and just didn't know it...I always wondered if the monster was impersonating people at different times. :confused3

As far as Juliette, I'm not sure about her....either she is disillusioned and feels trapped, or she is evil and trying to get control. I look at it like this....Jack could possibly be better by siding with her, but he certainly couldn't be any worse. We KNOW Ben is a liar. He says they don't kill...but, they were willing to kill Claire. Also, he is treating Sawyer and Kate pretty badly....and, he was NOT nice to Michael and Walt. Juliette and Ben don't seem to be to "cuddly" when they meet in the halls, and Juliette seemed really shaken up and over her head when the girl Sun shot died. In the preview, we also see Juliette warning Kate that Sawyer will be killed (even though Ben doesn't believe in killing). And, we KNOW that Ben is a liar. Of course, I guess it all could be another psychological "test" to see how good of a person Jack really is. No one ever said the x-rays were actually REAL....they could've been staged to give Jack just enough information to hang himself....it ALL could be a hoax!!! It certainly looks like things come to a head before any surgery happens.

It will be nice to both see, and and maybe actually HEAR from Alex. I would LOVE to hear her side of the story.

I figure that ...
  • Charlie and Sayid told people who asked what happened, maybe not in a lot of detail but it happened off-camera. I mean, watching one character tell other characters plot details that we had just seen wouldn't make for exciting television
  • there has to be a third group on the island. I don't know exactly who and what they are -- renegades or test subjects from Dharma that got away and out of control, another group of scientists, or something else. They have to be the group that grabbed the kids and others from the tail section. Remember when Jin saw them when they passed by and how dirty and "wild" they appeared to be? Maybe Patchy the Pirate (DW Lauri's name for eyepatch guy) is part of them, or he's another "Desmond" stuck in a hatch somewhere. Maybe the guy in the cage across from Sawyer at first was part of them?
  • the black smoke could assume a variety of forms, such as Yemi or Jack's father from season one, or the black horse that Sawyer and Kate saw. That can explain the visions many have seen.

What I wonder is --- is the black smoke the same thing as the light that Locke saw? Is it something that appears to examine and judge a person and their character and actions, and appears as a black cloud when it has judged a person and their actions to be that of a sinner, evil, or basically bad, but appears as a bright light when that person is judged to be good? For example, Locke hasn't led a spotless life. He got caught up in that pot-growing cult, for one thing, but overall he has been basically a good person all his life. Eko, on the other hand, may have had good intentions but his actions and methods were brutal. Locke saw a bright light because he was judged to be good and Eko a black cloud because he was judged to be bad. When Eko didn't confess and repent, he was killed.

Or are they two different things? Did Locke see one thing and Eko saw another? Maybe what was dragging Locke into the jungle near the end of season one was what Eko saw but he thought it was what he initially saw.

And what is the origin of the black smoke/white light/whatever? Is it a product of a Dharma Initiative experiment gone bad, or is it something else entirely?

LOL is your DW a Spongebob fan??
:rotfl: I'm going to call him Patchy the Pirate from now on too pirate:

Well I hate to admit it but I fell asleep during the last 10 minutes of the show. So I totally missed what happened to Eko - I take it that the smoke monster killed him somehow?

The two biggest questions my DS and I had were - Why the heck is Sayid back and nobody is even asking him what happened!? and Who is the new couple?! Is it like Star Trek where the new "Ensign Johnson" shows up only to get killed off right away??? :sad2:

well when Charlie and the rest of them came back from the hatch after it exploded.....nothing was explained then, either. they like to keep us in the dark apparently.
