Any one know why we haven't seen the Lion King on DVD yet?

Disney is notorious for holding out on Video releases. I'd assume this also would apply to DVD as well.

I believe they usually space out the re-releases by 8 years.

Anyone else?

Lion King is one of the DVDs that Disney has decided to release in their new 'Platinum' line of DVDs. The first one of these is Snow White, which releases this October, the rest of them release over the next 10 years. I don't know where Lion King falls in that 10 year cycle, but I know that Beauty & the Beast (my personal fav.) is near the end.

On the upside, when they *are* finally released, they should be worth the wait.

I read somewhere the Beauty and the Beast would be released in 2002. Let me see if I can find the site again.

ok i found it.

I don't know exactly where this person got all of their info, but they do say Beauty and the beast is scheduled for 2002. Also says the Lion King is 2004. This site has release dates for all disney movies. Now whether this info is accuate or not, I don't know, but I can hope!

I didn't know if I could put the link here. If anyone is interested, let me know. (Or if I can put if here, someone just tell me and i can add it.)

I thought that the big three (Beauty and the Beast, The Lion King and Aladdin) would be available on DVD approximately 10 years after their original theatrical debut. Beauty and the Beast is due to be rereleased in IMAX theatres next March, and I thought the DVD re-release would follow thereafter (or at least by Christmas 2002). And the other two would follow consecutively. I have no idea if they plan to release all 3 in IMAX, which would be way too neat.

I could be wrong, though ...

I know Disney has had this policy about holding video releases for a long time, but I think the days when that policy makes sense are OVER.

First of all, the DVD had taken over home theatre. Sure I can get movies like Aladdin and Lion King on VHS (and I have them ) but I don't WATCH VHS movies anymore. Frankly after getting used to watching DVD movies, I can't watch a tape anymore.

Second, by the time their 10 year cycle is over, the DVD will be replaced by the next generation of home entertainment device.

Third, if Disney needs an infusion of cash (which apparently it does) why not release these movies now, and charge a little more for them and make millions in pure profit. I know I would pay up to $50.00 for a special edition DVD of Lion King and I don't think I'm the only one. (realistically the target price is probably $35-40)

So why doesn't someone at Disney challenge this ridiculous policy and get those movies that we ALREADY HAVE on tape, released to DVD.

I think the original reason of holding them back so that each release "would be new for each generation" is a thing of the past.

I disagree here. I think the prudent thing is keep the tradition. If Disney abandoned the policy of re-release, they would oversaturate the market.

By keeping space between movie releases, you keep the "grand event" feeling when the movie is finally re-released to the public.

That's not necessarily true. The CD has been around for over 15 years, and it's still going strong.

Depnding on who you listen to, in 10 years we may, or we may not, have high definition dvd to go along with our high definition tv's, and the players may, or may not, play current dvds.

If they take 10 years to offer the full line, DVD will be the "Beta" of the future and outdated by some other new, slick technology.

I don't blame Disney for streaming their revenue and resulting cash flow, just annoys me to have to wait so long to buy my personal favorites.

If you cant wait foe the U.S release of Cinderella, Bambi, Sleeping Beauty, or Snow White: they are avalible on Ebay for about 20.00. I bought Cinderella and it works fine in my DVd player. I believe they are imports from Japan and are in English

I never understood it. My son ( who was not even born the last time the Lion King was up for sale) LOVES that movie! For the number of times i have rented it i could have and would have bought the darn movie! By the time they do get around to releasing it, he will be almost 7 and who knows if he will still like it by then! Everytime i go to the video store its always " want the lion mommy!"

His other favorite movie Pocohontas, i was just able to get today at the disney store. Now why has pocohontas been released again and not lion king? ARGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!

I have a DVD site and I always post any Disney news there on releases. like the release dates of Snow White and Dmbo.. Being a big Disney fan, that is one of the priorities. If you want to occasionally look to see if there is Disney release news, my page will say it. If you want to look it it at http://www.dvdrage.com:cool:
