Larger women in bikinis?

Not sure what your point is with starting this discussion. Are you trying to show how politically correct you are or, are you, yourself obese? Just wondering.

Well, that was a bit rude. I asked because I actually had a dream last night that I was at the pool wearing a bikini. This is not something I have done in quite a few years and I started thinking that I often see overweight men going shirtless in the pool/at the beach, but I very rarely see overweight women in bikinis. I asked about swim shorts, because I thought it was more equal to a man wearing swim trunks.

I wear a tankini, though I do not think it's as physically comfortable as wearing a bikini. I, however, do not feel comfortable, considering my fitness level at the moment, in a bikini.

And, I do not do "politically correct." I do try to keep an open mind, I try not to say things that I feel may be offensive to someone, and I practice compassion. Call it what you will.

I think people should wear whatever they feel comfortable in. No needs approval from anyone else. They have just as much right to wear a bikini as nasty anorexic chicks. Personally, I find confidence much more attractive than any physical attribute. I have "not skinny" friends who rock bikinis and I think they look amazing because a) they look like a real person and not a barbie or toothpick and I think that is beautiful and b) I find their confidence extremely attractive.

People should wear what they want and never let anyone feel bad about themselves or feel they are not good enough to wear any particular clothing.

You know that is pretty offensive. Why is okay to make comments like that about thin people? That is really an unattractive trait.

I admit that I'm shallow and think that just because they make something in your size, doesn't mean you should wear it. I don't make rude comments to those dressed in non figure flattering clothes, but do wonder if people look in the mirror.

I am an equal opportunity double looker and will look twice whether your male or female and got it all hanging out. Good on them that they have the confidence to wear a bikini if they are overweight, as my standards for myself are way different then theirs.

I do think that those with a muffin top can pull off a bikini top and swim shorts....

I also think that women hold each other to higher standards then men regardless if it's fair or not.

Flame away, but just being honest.

i live near the beach and see all shapes and sizes in bikinis. i just prefer people not have things hanging out that shouldn't be hanging out. and i don't care how fit you are, i really don't like thong bottoms.

the one thing i will say is that i wish i had the confidence that some do. i am fairly thin and still pick myself apart in a two-piece. i am going to try to overcome that this year since i'm the smallest i've been since before kids. i keep telling myself that nobody else is going to notice or care!

I wanted honest opinions. I think yours is perfectly valid.

I always think of that TLC show "What not to Wear". I don't know if it is still on- we haven't had TLC for about 7 years now.

Anyway, I think there is certain clothing that is more flattering for certain body types. Some suits can actually make a person look slimmer (not saying a bikini would do this- probably not). But, I also think that it takes a really confident person to not care about what they look like in the clothes they choose.

Personally, I wouldn't be caught dead in a bikini if it didn't fit me properly. But if you don't really care, then all the power to you!

I think you see more overweight men wearing a bathing suit with the gut hanging over the top than women because as woman we are more critical of how we look. I think you should wear the bathing suit you're comfortable in. I also think that if you are comfortable in a bikini but you're are overweight to the extent people can't tell if you have bottoms on or not you've probably gone too far.

Nope, I don't think very overweight/obese women should go to the pool or beach in a bikini.

IMOP if the size of you bathing suit is double digits then you probably shouldn't be wearing bikini! A one piece, tankini, a two piece with a skirt yes string bikini NOOOOOO!!! Sorry but it is gross and I cringe every year when we head out to pool on post because young Army wives are the worst offenders!! If I can see your csection scar your swimsuit is probably not appropriate for a public pool!

If your belly hangs over the top of the bikini bottom, you probably shouldn't wear it. In the end though I don't really care.

I'm more shocked by unlined white swimwear than plus sizes in a 2-piece.

Don't people realize that when white spandex gets wet it's the equivalent of being naked? Yet they don't get kicked out for indecent exposure.

My moto is just because you CAN do it, doesn't mean you SHOULD do it.

Yes, this.

Bingo.

More shame on the shallow folks that worry, post, complain etc about others..

No shame at all ... call it what you will, 'shallow', etc ... if you are obese and wearing a bikini in public there are folks who will form an opinion when they see you. It may not be a positive one. If you (general you) don't care, then bully for you.

I am truly sorry for having offended anyone. I was not referring to "skinny girls". I meant girls who are legitimately unhealthy underweight. I personally find it very unattractive when I can count every one of your ribs. Yet that is somehow more acceptable in our society than some one being a size 8. It drives me crazy. I feel this society pressures women into feeling like they have to be a size two or they are just hideous. It's a pet peeve of mine. Again, I apologize for offending anyone. Not my intent. But again, no one should care what I think anyway. If you are underweight but feel you are healthy and attractive, good for you. My opinion shouldn't matter.

Really? You're grossed out by a size 10 woman in a bikini?

I was at Copacabana beach in Rio last February and certainly enjoyed the visuals as the women wear very little cloth and string which is appealing to my eyes.

To answer your question, I hate to see overweight guys in speedos. But even worse are the women in bikinis who display excess baggage (belly, folds, spare tires and dimpled things hanging). Cover that up.

I can't believe what some women wear. I wonder if they look in the mirror or ask an opinion of someone before they go out. That is great that they feel comfortable but sometimes you have to cover up. Bikini's are designed for thin people. That is why the one piece was invented.

I'm in the camp of "Just because you can wear it, doesn't mean you necessarily should wear it."

I don't think anyone should avoid pools & the beaches because he/she is ashamed of how they look, but I do think some people need to realize that some suits are not going to look attractive on their particular bodies.

That said, I don't much care who wears a bikini. Or a tankini. Or a tank suit. And men in Speedos don't really bother me that much either. I guess I kinda look at an overweight man in a Speedo the same way I look at an overweight woman in a bikini... "That's possibly not the best look for you, but, hey, whatever floats your boat!"

I do admire people who are confident & comfortable in their bodies. That doesn't mean I don't sometimes wonder, "What was she thinking?!"

If I'm wearing a bathing suit, I want to find a suit that is the most flattering to my body type. I'm not very comfortable in a bikini (no matter what size I am!), but I think that's because, growing up, I was never allowed to wear a bikini. So, in my best "body years," I had to wear a one-piece, so, 3 kids later, why start now? ;)

And I do think that, sometimes, a well-fitted two-piece (two-piece not a bikini) looks better on an overweight body than a ill-fitting tank suit. It's all about finding the best fit & best suit for your body type.

We go to the beach every summer, &, every year, I always admire the ladies "of a certain age" who are still rocking a bikini! I always tell DH, "That's how I'm going to be!" Of course, I need to purchase a couple of bikinis before then... I have a nice collection of tankinis currently.

Oh, & I'm another one who thinks that some men look really, really good in those short tight square-leg suits.
