La Hacienda--No More Complimentary Chips??

DH read this somewhere online this morning that La Hacienda is no longer serving complimentary chips and salsa prior to dinner. I checked the menu and it does indeed indicate $6 for chips, salsa and queso with an additional $2 charge for additional chips and an additional $3 charge for salsa or queso.

Has anyone been recently who can confirm these up charges? It was bad enough when they removed the rice and beans from the Parridilla del Mar for two (if you want them they are a side dish with additional cost), but no complimentary chips and salsa--no bueno!

We use a large amount of salsa on our "tacos" made from that platter. This could get expensive even if we skip the chips. :headache:

Yea we were kind of annoyed. Kept waiting on chips and finally asked our server about them. He was actually really apologetic said he had been told they were now an appetizer. Of course it wasn't his fault. We did end up ordering them but they were in fact six dollars. He brought us cheese and salsa though not just salsa.

Jeez. The other key here is how big is the portion that they are charging for? Is salsa tiny like a side of ketchup I’ve seen in some places or beefed up? Are the chips considerable?

if not it’s adding insult to injury.

It was a big basket of chips. We didn't finish them but there were only two of us. A family of four of more would probably go through them quickly. The cheese and salsa were in medium sized bowls. I didn't ask if we could get more if we ran out though. I'm guessing no... But I could be wrong. It was enough for two for sure. But large parties would go through it quickly.

Forget ponchos or comfy shoes. It’s now BYOS that tops the list. 🤦‍♀️🤣😉

Dang it Cheapek. Now you can't even be as good as my local Chevy's. I think I'll go to Universal instead......
I wonder if cheapek offers guests a drink when they arrive in his home. may be an up charge for water that’s bottled?! 😂

Ok so basically they now want you to buy your “welcome to our restaurant” chips and salsa. And not get full. So you can pay for more food. I think they’ve forgotten this isn’t how it works in Mexico and not very authentic to that country.

Yea it really is ridiculous. We just had our minds set on salsa and chips since it's always been free in previous years so we paid the upcharge for it this time. I don't know if we'll go back next time honestly. There's other restaurants we've been wanting to try in Epcot anyway. They definitely charge for every little thing now. We went to Mama Melroses too and they still had the complimentary bread but I said next time it'll probably be an appetizer too...

I could swear we had them when we went in October...

We did! Just looked at a picture we took there and chips/salsa were on the table and we definitely didn't order them!

It's just a poor business decision in the way they went about it. It would have been much smarter, and more profitable, to raise the prices slightly in other ways to at least feign the idea of a "free" item. This is Chapek at his core. He has no customer service skills and isn't creative in the way he increases prices.

People always argue, "Its a business of course they raise prices to make money!". The previous Disney leadership knew how to better integrate the price hikes along with seemingly "free" items(hello FP and Magic Express). This is why Chapek will ultimately fail.

This was this month for us and it was San Angel not La Hacienda but I'm assuming it'd be the same for both if they're both owned by the same group.

I can't recall, but does Disney actually own/operate either San Angel Inn or La Hacienda or are they operated by an outside vendor currently? Which ownership group is it, if it's not Disney?

Thank you for this thread. Canceling San Angel next week. Ate at Frontera a few years ago and one of the biggest things I remember about it was no chips and salsa. I also like Chevy's, maybe wind up there. Since no Magical Express I'll be renting a car, makes it easier to go off property for food.

All the Chapek blame for something he doesn't really control? It's not a disney owned restaurant.

I'd rather they NOT charge everyone extra for everything to keep free chips. Making them an appetizer means I have a choice if I want them or not instead of forcing me to pay 6$ more hidden all over the menu for something I might not.

Supply chain issues and rising costs are real. I expect to see a lot more restaurants that essentially give out a free appetizer (ie bread service) to make similar changes. It's not just disney.

This is really strange to read. I was just in San Angel Inn like two weeks ago and there were complimentary chips.

I understand the supply chain issues, my business is suffering because of it. But ... You pay over $100 just to get in the park or you spent $1k for an AP, you pay way more for food and drinks vs. any comparable restaurant off property and they can't give you some measly chips and salsa? It was probably that fat shaming woman Christine Mcarthy's idea. After all, we need to all watch our waist lines, right? :furious:
