Kitchen sink in the island?

I enjoyed looking at your kitchen remodel pics. Your new layout is much better. I like how the wall is set back behind the fridge so the darn box doesn't stick out. Your cabinets are just what I'd pick and I love the Shaker style. Great idea having the breakfast prep area under the microwave. Enjoy your new kitchen for years to come.

Thanks, the breakfast area was my wife & her sister's idea. It works very well. They also put all the plates, bowls, cereal, and bread in those drawers for easy access. I happened to be out of town when they put it all back together so I can't take any credit.

When we met with the contractor he asked us if this was to be a working or a "show" kitchen which was interesting. So far we would not change a thing after 2 years.

I wouldn't do it. Our island is a massive work/serving space. I wouldn't like it any other way.

I am not a fan of islands an would hate the kitchen sink in an island. Myself I would not want to have to walk around an island or sweep an mop floor around an island. I've found them to be messy clutter catchers rather than good work space.

I think it's possible to do the open concept without an island.

I gotta have a view when I'm at the sink and I'm not talking about the rest of the kitchen. I've always had a window over my sink. Can't imagine not having that.

Love my island kitchen sink. We built our house 15 years ago and have our sink and dishwasher on the island. Our kitchen is open concept and flows into the living room. My sink faces the living room and looks out over our backyard (across our eat-in kitchen table.) Most of the "living" in our house takes place in the living room, so I like it that if I'm doing dishes, I'm facing everyone and can still take part in the goings-on.

We have had prep sinks in an island a couple of times, but never the main sink and I cannot imagine how that would look right to me, especially in context to the placement of a dishwasher. It just seems impractical, for everything from lifting wet dishes from the island to the dishwasher, to the inevitable overspray going everywhere. That having been said, if you want it, and it's a home you intend to occupy for a long time, there's no reason to get the house you want. I, however, would never design a kitchen in that fashion.
