Just closed on 160 direct contract at grand Cali

That seems odd because I found out about direct grand Cali points on the Disney website. It had a button you click about inquiring about sold out hotels. And then I called the Disney hotline and spoke with a guide.
same. which is why I dont want that person as my guide. It wasnt all that long ago I talked to her either. The next day I went under contract for a resale VGC.

Thank you! Also, how come you decided on 170 points as your magic number? How come that many and not a different number? I only ask because I was offered 160 and just took what was offered. What would you consider your ideal amount of points to the grand Cali ?
Wow okay so you were offered around the same points as me ! That’s fantastic. How come you jumped on the offer so quick? What is your math for the delta on direct vs resale ? Is 14k not considered large ? Sorry for the questions haha I don’t know anyone about dvc besides these chat boards. I also was wondering why Hilton timeshares and Marriott are so cheap compared to Disney timeshares.

1) We were looking for 160-200 points so we could spend a week in a 1 br every other year or so. We decided on that number by looking at point charts and when we usually travel to California. The guide only had 170 points so we took it although we would have taken up to 200 probably.

2) We jumped on the points because it’s rare for them to offer direct points and a resale contact with the right UY and number of points would have been challenging. We knew we would regret it if we passed on the points.

3) VGC delta is 310$ direct vs about 250$ or so resale. We are currently pursuing a BLT resale - 275$ direct vs the 110$ that the seller accepted.

4) Other time shares tend not to hold their value.

5) if you are doubting yourself or don’t feel like you know enough about DVC, you can rescind if you are still in the window.

Okay that’s good to know because I wasn’t sure if people would pay the extra amount direct at $310. It seemed steep for an extra 14k but I don’t know anyone in my inner circle or in general besides these websites of other dvc owners.
While many here agree that direct isn’t often worth the extra cost over resale, VGC, because of its super high resale value and rarity, is probably the one exception. It’s difficult to find a great VGC deal that has its current points so most would rather just pay the slight premium for direct, get the use year they prefer with all its points (and sometimes the previous years points which alone are worth at least $23/pt making the delta between direct an resale even smaller).

It’s a super small resort that is very difficult to buy direct (and resale if you want a specific contract). It’s also very difficult to book outside of its home resort priority so you really do need to own there to stay more than a day or two in a row unless you get really lucky.

As you delve further into the DVC side of these boards you’ll see how highly people regard VGC, so be excited and proud of your new ownership! I would love to buy there if it made any sense for us but alas I’ll have to stalk and try my best at 7mos like the rest of us non-VGC plebeians 😅

Same.
We had to rent VGC 11 months out to book!
I was able to get VDH at 7 months on my direct points.

Thank you for your response this is very helpful. Im
Beyond the rescind window.

Thank you for your response this is making me not feel as bad for my purchase haha and explaining the reasoning behind your response.

Since you dropped a ton of money on this contract like myself. I keep looking around and seems like Disney DVC costs more than any other timeshare like Hilton or Marriott. Why do you think that is ?

I honestly don’t know much about other timeshares but the little I do know is that DVC holds its value much better than any other time share system. We could sell our older contracts at significantly more than what we paid for them (but we never would). I think DVC is flexible which people like and it’s attached to destinations that people see value in. Beyond that I’m not really sure.

We have 4 home resorts: BCV, VGF, BLT, and VGF so clearly I am biased in that we love the DVC system.

What about the Dvc system do you like the most? Do you ever travel without children? I will have this dvc contract for the next 32 years and have no intention of selling.

You did great. We are at VCG right now and it is my home resort. I recently purchased a resale for 160 points but would have purchased direct if available for my use year.

VCG is a big purchase and it is easy to have a twinge of buyer’s remorse, but the overall delta between resale and direct is a fairly small percentage of the purchase. I think you math is off a little on the cost savings, plus the direct contracts have some perks.

I’m having second thoughts if I made the right decision. My guide sold me 160 grand Cali direct points at $310 a point. I know resale is lower but it would lock you out of staying at Disneyland villas hotel. I calculated it cost me about 14k more than going resale route and also gave me the blue card direct benefits. It’s too late for me to back out but I guess I’m looking for validation or if I made a 14k oopsies. Did I make the wrong choice ?? Do people regret going direct on aulani or other direct hotels ?
I just read that California has a 7 day backout period if you are interested.

We have no kids, just husband and I. I married into a Disney crazed family - they would go for a week at least once a year but never bought into DVC. I hated paying rates for a “normal” hotel room which felt cramped and claustrophobic on a regular basis. Hence, DVC - we get a 1 bedroom if it’s just the 2 of us or a 2 bedroom if my MIL joins us. We love the space, the king bed, and we use the washer and dryer waaaaay more than we thought. We don’t really cook meals in the room but the kitchen is nice because the full fridge holds snacks/beverages and we use the oven to cook frozen pizzas if we don’t feel like going out. We didn’t look at any other time share systems because staying on property in the bubble is important just from an ease of vacation/more hassle free perspective.

We did briefly consider buying a Four Seasons Scottsdale resale but hated the fact that it was a 2 bedroom, 1 week, and pretty much locked into a season. The DVC points system gives more flexibility.

I’m curious if you bought in May or June?
