Interesting... because Welcome Back, Kotter started airing in September 1975; and Travolta joined Scientology in... 1975.

Yes, seems to support some people's assertions that members of Scientology benefitted, in more than a spiritual way, from the association and were required to give back.

This religion has been around since the 50's, so JT probably dabbled for a while before committing. I'm sure he didn't have much choice after he won the role - if he wanted to keep it!

It's sad in this day and age that people still feel they have to live like this--and can't be free to be who they are.

One article I read identifed the other guy as their nanny and also the person who found Jett after his seizure. Not sure if this was verified, though. The media doesn't use fact checkers anymore

Thanks. I find this whole thing so sad. JT was my (or one of my) first crush(es), and though I'be been over those feelings for years the warm memories still make me smile.

I've heard nothing but positive comments from people who have met him; JT is alway reported as being kind and gracious towards fans. I just hope that the harrassement allegations are false and he and his familly can put this behind them soon.

Well, no. Taking the source (Wikipedia) with a grain of salt, Travolta apparently converted in 1975 after being given a copy of Dianetics to read on a movie shoot in - 1975.

And while, sure, he did well with Saturday Night Fever and Grease - Scientology sure didn't help his career at all over the following fifteen or so years of bad/no roles.

And while, sure, he did well with Saturday Night Fever and Grease - Scientology sure didn't help his career at all over the following fifteen or so years of bad/no roles.

What if he didn't tow the line or someone more interesting caught their eye in the 80s? Who knows what was going on between him and the hierarchy of the church. He's made statements about not agreeing with them before.
I've never read the Wiki entry until just now. I read he won the role after being introduced to it, I assume during the movie you referenced. That film was released in '75, so filming took place prior...couldn't find out when, though. The link referenced in the wiki entry wasn't active anymore to double check. I guess we'd have to ask J.T.!

The rumors don't surprise me. I have heard them before. I would feel horrible for his wife and children if they were true. They are the ones who would truly be hurt by his deceit and lies.

I miss the scientology thread!!! I wanna bring it back. Why did it close? My guess is scientology legal got to the powers that be here. We know how they work.

There's got to be a lot of backroom deals in these arranged relationships. The closeted partner gets a press-friendly personal life and the other gets fame and a comfortable lifestyle. Seems like a win-win if you're willing to put up with the drawbacks.

Nor could I find any information that Quentin Tarantino - who initiated his come back, is a Scientologist.

Yes, and Scarlett Johansson, who was allegedly approached and turned down the offer, has done well for herself, without the drawbacks. (Except for a weird stint with Ryan Reynolds. But, I'm talking career-wise.)

Me too! I was reading thru it last night, and LAUGHING. But I did think the same thing. There was so much hoopla around Suri, at that time. They had to be mad-googling going on, by "them". Then I wondered why the "no religion" rule had been implemented? I never went into any religion threads - were they heated? Politics got heated....did the religion ones?
