Hi Everyone!

DH & I will be staying at the AKL for the first time 12/1-12/8. We are celebrating our 20th anniversary this year and wanted to put a magnet/ picture on our door. I had gotten the idea from a fellow Dis'er who made them for their land(Pop)/sea vacation. Unfortunately I came to the realization that the doors at AKL are probably wood and would not hold magnets.

Could someone please clarify that for me? If they are wood, does anyone have suggestions about putting up lime green mickey heads & other such decorations on our AKL door? And is it even allowed by the resort.

Thanks in advance for your help!

I made a door sign with space to write notes for our stay (for a pic, go to my craft report threads below) and used it at both BCV and AKV. The Front Desk and Maid from BCV even gave us pins! We got lots of good wishes at BCV; unfortunately, no one at AKV responded.

Anyway, for both resorts, I just used plain old scotch tape and they stayed on fine. Since AKV has a raised wood shield on the wood door, you need a smaller size picture to make it stay flat. I used a 12 x 12" piece of paper plus had Mickey, Minnie and MH hanging off of that, and it was perfect for BCV but too large for AKV.

have fun!

amcjeep4life, thanks for the review. I think AKL really has the ability to make people really love it! It is such a great place to relax.

Another thanks for the great review, especially of the Sunrise Safari! We're booked for it in January, on the morning of DH's birthday! :yay:

I know that it starts very early in the morning; does the lounge have coffee available at that time? What about a muffin or roll?

We always love our trips to WDW, but this one'll be so special now that AKV has CL! :dance3:

First off, I would like to apologize. I have been home for four days and have yet to post here. Trying to catch up with everything that happened while we were gone....

....:snooty: hmph!!!

[....well, okay, all is forgiven...]

...I just don't understand all the fuss about the Zebra Domes. I made every one try one, and none of us were that impressed. Sorry Kimmar.....

.....:snooty: ....oh well, :confused3 more for ME....:teeth: !!

....They had some awesome layered trifle-like dessert with whipped cream and coconut that was way better.....

.....:hyper: that was the coconut tiramisu - which is soooo AWESOME!!

Well, about 2 months ago, I booked my first AKV stay in a savannah view room. I planned on a long weekend in May (Thursday -> Monday). Unfortunately, conceirge view wasn't available so I asked to go on the waitlist. Well luckily, the waitlist came through near the end of August. So I have my first stay in any of the resorts at conceirge level!

Well, since I got conceirge level, I decided to try to add on another night so that I would have another day to enjoy it. I called tonight and unbelievably, a conceirge room was available for the Monday of my trip. So now I have 5 nights at conceirge level! I am so excited! :woohoo:

Does anyone know the address for the AKL IPO? I want to a mail them a thank you for all the work they have put into our vacation!:thumbsup2

Congratulations! I did see the rooms (the mock-ups at DVC), and they are just fabulous. You'll love it!

I also had certain "people" in our party, who will remain unnamed, who were not impressed with the domes.....but MY family had them in the fridge at all times! My 18 yo DS was absolutely smitten with them, and I swear he ate them for lunch more than once!
:rotfl:

Thanks so much for your response! You do great work!:thumbsup2 I think I will do some type of personalization to the pictures and then laminate them. And I know GM has some type of tape product that does not ruin wood surfaces. Although you did say you used scotch tape and it worked well for you.

I want to thank all you for the great information I have read about AKL. THANKS! :)

We are going to be at AK in 38 days!!! We have a savannah view, bunk bed booked, and I called the Disney reservation number to request the Zebra Trail, Arusha Savannah. Should I call right to AK and make the request as well? I know it is just a request and its not guarenteed, but I want the best view possible.

Thanks for any advice!

If you have your request noted on your reservation, the hotel should get it automatically. Disney reservations turns over your reservation to the hotel a few days before your arrival (I think five days before). Until then AKL will know nüthing of you yet. If you want to be certain, give them a call a few days before you arrive and say that you want to make sure that your room request was noted with your reservation.

Donald is #1...Congrats on your COncierge stay!!!! I can't wait either!!

Hey Sazzo's Mommy!!! How are ya? I feel like I am following in your Disney footsteps!! lol We are off to AKV Concierge as well, not as soon as you though! And the Sunrise Safari!!
Have fun!!!

Sorry if these questions are repeats but I did not go thru all the posts..
Do I need to book the safari at AKL before we go in January and I know there are 2, is one better than another? Also what is an aproximate bus ride time to get to the MK, we have an early date with the princesses!
Thanks!!

I was told that the resort gets the info about 8 days before your arrival date. Interstingly enough, I didn't make any requests, other than asking for bunkbeds, and ended up exactly where you want to be. :thumbsup2 Good luck! I wish I was going back this November. We are shooting for next November (my birthday is in there!). Are the Christmas decorations up before Thanksgiving, or do they go up after that?

PS: I had to search for this thread, it was on PAGE 3! Sacriledge!

Yes, I may be committing heresy…but I wouldn’t ever go back to the Animal Kingdom Lodge…. I was a bit disappointed to say the least.

Starting with check-in on Sunday (9/16). We got caught in a rainstorm in Orlando – which made the last 4 miles to the hotel take 40 minutes and we did not check in until 7:00 p.m. So I was ready for a warm greeting – not to mention food! I got a lukewarm “hi” from the girl at the front desk. No African Ambassadors in the lobby. (Not even a valet to help unpack the car!) We had requested a bunk bed pool view. We got it, on the first floor. Okay – I can deal with that, but I did ask if they had anything on a higher floor. After a HUGE sigh, she disappeared behind closed doors (without a word as to where she was going/what she was doing). She did come back out and was consulting with someone. She indicated that they had something on higher floors, but no bunk beds. Okay – I can live with the first floor, but PLEASE drop the attitude!

So I’m starting to think, Disney magic? Heck, I’d just deal with some Disney niceness at this point.

So, no valet with an offer to help. I go over to the valet desk (room) and ask if I can have a rolling cart. “No, we don’t give those out.” That’s it. Not “We don’t give those out but I’d be happy to help.” So we lug all of our stuff out the car and off we go to the room. I can deal with the lobby being dark. The animal sightings on the way to the elevator were enough to make my children jump up and down. I can deal with the room being dark. LOVED the idea of bunk beds in the room and it worked out great. We called mousekeeping and asked for more pillows. Off to dinner for a quick bite at the Mara.

Disappointment number two. I thought the food there was awful. A dried out hamburger and a chicken wrap. I don’t even remember what the boys had – they didn’t seem to mind. And we paid cash for this meal, as we didn’t want to start the DDP until the next day in a park. Which, oddly, seemed to perturb the cashier. (Really – who gets upset with cash?) Again, no Disney magic to be found at this place.

Got back to the room. No pillows to be had, but oddly enough, they had come in and left bed rails. Called again and asked for pillows. Waited, went swimming. Nice pool, but by then the water slide was closed. I think I was more disappointed about that than the boys were! Back to the room, still no pillows. I called the front desk and asked if they would come soon, as it was now time for the boys to get in bed and I didn’t want knocking on the door after they fell asleep. Their answer – come to the front desk to get them. OK. (But I’m thinking I am paying this much a night for a room and they can’t bring me pillows?) Off DH goes to get pillows, only to be told at the front desk that “You can’t get those here.” That’s it. No, “So sorry you misunderstood” or “So sorry we gave you the wrong information.” Just “You can’t get those here.” Back he comes to the room for a third call for pillows, which then came within 15 minutes…. Disney magic? HA!

The Mara redeemed itself somewhat the next day – breakfast was GOOD. Ah, the bacon. Someone got it right – crisp and yummy! The boys loved the mini Mickey waffles and I had a croissant sandwich with bacon and eggs. And off to the parks we went. Lots of fun there – more on that later. We went to a FABULOUS dinner at Coral Reef – great staff there – lots of Disney magic (so it DOES exist!).

We were in the hotel minimally. In the mornings for breakfast (except for the character breakfast at the Polynesian – FABULOUS!!!!!) and at night to go swimming. The one night we made it back to the hotel to get to the water slide, the lifeguard was positively menacing. Like WE were disturbing HIM by being in the pool. And mind you, there weren’t that many of us. Maybe 8 children playing on the waterslide – all of them were being pretty well behaved. He stared at one child so vehemently that if it were me I would have cried. Yes, it really was that bad. If he had looked at one of my children that way, I would have had a manager by my side in a skinny minute. At 7:20 p.m. he stood up and said in a voice that only the tired and fed-up could muster, “Last call for the slide.” Now, in 20 minutes, my kids could probably make another 17 runs down the slide….last call? To his credit, he did not shut it down until 8:00 p.m., though. He was NOT a happy camper. Again, no Disney magic from that employee. Notice a trend yet?

I’ve read on other postings everyone’s wonderful and fabulous experience. Towel animals? No (even with tips left each day). Friendly staff? Are you sure you were at the AKL?

Good things I can say…Hmmm, I have to reach for that. The bus service was nice – although the wait times to get on the busses were sometimes long. Guess that is what we get in our “instant gratification” world. It was nice that we didn’t share the busses with another resort and had direct hotel to park service. The bus drivers themselves were pleasant. The people riding the busses with us were delightful. And it was SO nice to see men and boys get up and offer their seats to women and older folks. (And I must admit, my DH was one of those that did that!) There was NO construction noise or inconvience. Yes, there were black tarps up on the 5th and 6th floors. But we never heard one out of place noise.

And I have to say thank you to the unknown family who gave us their DDP card the first morning we were there. It gave us two breakfasts and two snacks for the day. THAT was our Disney magic. (They were on their way out to the airport and had leftovers – saw us with our two boys and just handed it over. Don’t know their names – their card said “Unknown Unknown” believe it or not! But, if you read this, you guys ROCK!)

We moved on Thursday to the Sea World Residence Inn. For $150 less a night (maybe more…) we got MUCH better service, bigger rooms and a hot breakfast included. I wasn’t expecting much – not nearly as much as I was anticipating the “Disney experience” at AKL. After the dismal service we received at AKL, anything would have been an improvement! Seriously, though, we loved the Residence Inn and would tell anyone that wants to go to Orlando and stay off site to book this hotel. It was clean and the front desk staff and the concierge were very nice (but please, someone, do away with the dual concierge responsibilities. I DO NOT WANT A TIME SHARE.)

Yes, the parks were fun - we did NOT have enough time to do everything. Now I completely understand whey folks spend two weeks there at a time or go back once (or more) a year. We loved, loved, loved Seaworld and the Magic Kingdom - our two favorites.

This trip was unusual for us - a big expense. Was it worth it in the long run? Yes, my boys had an absolute blast - and they don't know enough to be bothered by something not living up to its hype. They also didn't pay for it, so it makes it easier on them! HAHA! Would we rush back to Orlando next year? Not likely. (We just couldn't save that much $$ again to do something we've already done. Next trip will be for a new experience!) If I won the lottery and money was no object would I go back to Orlando? Absolutely. I just wouldn't stay at AKL.....

I am SO sorry you had such an unpleasant experience at AKL. What a bummer to save up so much money and then be disappointed. We left AKL the day you arrived. Fortunately for us, we had a much better experience. The weather was a bit iffy each evening, though. Maybe the rain and thunderstorms, along with the excruciating heat we had the week before you arrived got everyone in a funk :confused3 . I'm glad you were able to enjoy your vacation, despite everything. Your Sea World trip sounds interesting. We'd like to take our girls there next time we're down.

Sorry to hear about your stay......I do agree with the staff at Coral Reef, we also had a great time there.
My SIL loves AKL and we are trying AKV in Feb....Too bad AKL didnt provide any magic....but those nice folks did who gave you that DDP card! I love hearing stuff like that:)
I perhaps would have attempted to speak with a manager prior to my departing and voice my "concerns". I still think guest satisfaction is important to Disney...Perhaps management needed to know some of the CM's were not doing their job...I would hate to leave a Disney property having any negative feelings....and probably would do something to try and change it.
Thanks again for sharing your story.

Thanks!!

...they are two completely different safaris.....the Sunrise Safari takes place at AK and a buffet breakfast is included in the safari. The second one is the Sunset Safari, which takes place direclty on AKL grounds, and is followed up with dinenr at Jiko....the 2nd one is more expensive.

Hey DisneyBride'03!:flower3: Hope you have fun planning your AKL CL stay! They have all been so wonderful in helping me plan for my DH's BDay! I can't wait to see what they have come up with!:thumbsup2
