Is It's Tough to Be a Bug too scary?

This is one attraction my family has never tried - would this be too intense for a four year old and her non-loving insect mom? I always will try something at least once (except Stich at MK) but it's never really appealed to me......

Last time I went I remember as soon as the show started I could hear dozens of babies and kids crying , its loud and there are alot of surprises like animatronics that pop up at the sides of the stages and of course the "interactive" seats. I would try it and just sit near the exit if you have to leave early.

I have brought my kids who were 5 and 3 the last time we were there, but they have also seen a Bug's Life and liked the movie. It's a little dark in the theatre and there are a "few surprises". As long as your little one has no phobias about bugs and isn't afraid of the dark, i think they will be fine.

My dd who is now 14 still does not like Bugs Life. We make her go in, and she sits on the edge of her seat. There is a part of the movie where it feels like a bee stings you from the back of your seat, something comes out and pokes you...so as long as she avoids that poke, she is good!

You have to know your kids. My son is 12 and he STILL doesn't really like this one. Its dark, loud, and there are bugs "popping out" everywhere. My son loves Bug's Life, but he's not really fond of this one. He will go in and tolerate it--its getting easy as he's getting older--but again, not one of his favs.

My kids were OK in this one, but this show ruined our friends' trip. Their son was about 3 and go so scared they had to leave the show and he would NOT go on any indoor rides or shows the rest of the trip. No Small World, Peter Pan, etc. Freaked out on every line. It reaaaaly ruined their trip.

This is one of my favorite 3-D shows! While there certainly are some kids who don't like it, and it does play on insect phobias a tad, it's also a very cute show. For starters, the theming of the line queue is fantastic! It's one of the best in all four parks, IMO. You get to see the tree up close and all the detail of the animal 'carvings' in the tree's trunk and roots. The show has a very good message, and it's lots of fun.

There are obviously some small kids who don't like this show, but I think most adults can handle it. (and most kids) If you find you don't like it, it is easy enough to leave this show. Try to sit on the far side of the theater when you enter, if you have any ability to choose your row.

It's certainly worth trying once.

Don't get me wrong--it is a GREAT show and I really enjoy it. Unfortunately, I think some of the little people are very scared for the dark and the insects that pop out. DS never threw a fit or anything, he was just very scared and hid his face. Luckily, we didn't have the experience of the other poster's travel mates where it ruined their trip. Never had that experience. Like I said earlier, you really need to know your kids and what they can and cannot handle.

P.S. to put it in perspective a little, DS STILL will not go on Stitch, but he will do ITTBAB. Go figure!

It scared my then 4 year old son so bad he had to be taken out and refused to go in any theater the rest of the trip. My other sons who were 6 and 8 at the time were scared also, but not quite as traumatized. Now when we go we avoid it and figure it's one less line we have to wait in.
My advice is if you are aprehensive, skip it! It wasn't worth the incredibly long wait anyway.

its one of the best attraction at AK, i have seen kids as young as 3 and 4 and they enjoyed it. i have never seen any child not enjoy it

There are a few parts in the show that might scare little kids. I don't want to ruin it for you guys so I won't tell you what they are but if your child doesn't know that it's not real, they might not enjoy it. So I would advise you to tell him/her that the show is just for fun and that nothing in there is real. There is something to do with spiders and wasps that scared my cousin when we took her and she is five.

Personally I think that if most of the crying kids had known it was a show about BUGS and not a Bug's Life themed show then there'd be a lot less crying. The attraction is far more creepy than scary.

It's (I think) the only ride at WDW that I think is scary! For me, it's a combination of the things jumping out at you, slight bug phobia, and some of the extra special effects being too realistic. I went on it once unknowingly (actually Dad recommended it highly - one of his fave shows there!) and hated it. Next trip, I didn't want to admit to everyone it scared me so I went on and promptly closed my eyes and sat in a manner that I escaped those special effects no one in my family knows I'm a closet wimp! shhhh don't tell

My DD7 was pretty freaked out by it last year. She wasn't traumatized, but it was kind of creepy.

However, we do say that when we go next year she needs to "try it again" and maybe it won't bother her so much.

At the beginning there's a baby crying in the sound track, where the termite comes out. I always thought it was real till my kids pointed it out. I have heard kids crying at times just the same.

For a young child I think it's loud dark and there are intense moments that are scary. You really have to know your child.

It's a great attraction and I always enjoy it, but am not sure I would take a 3 or 4 year old. Someone I work with just took her 2 sons (3 & 5) and neither liked Bugs Life - they thought it was too dark and scary.

If you're thinking of doing BL I would try it later in the trip. See how your child reacts to rides like POC and Muppets 3D. Even the Little Mermaid and Tikki room can be loud and have small intense moments.
If she reacts well to these attractions and enjoys them, you may do well with BL (but as someone suggested - sit at the end of a row just in case your child gets scared). If your child doesn't like any of the above attractions or gets scared at any point then she most likley will be scarad by BL.

I don't want to ruin the attraction in case you decide to go, but if i were you, I'd rather be informed for my child then not know.
There is a part where fake spiders come down from the ceiling
There is a part where a big can of "Raid" sprays to kill the bugs
And as somone mentioned - the poke in the back to emulate a sting.
Parts are loud and the theater gets darker.
But agian, there are cute jokes and fun scenes as well. Maybe if you prepare your child beforehand and give her the choice to go or not it might be better.
Plus the whole #D makes it more real. I would try Muppets and Philharmagic
3D movies first.

I think based on hwo your child reacts to other attractions and rides during the trip you will know if she's ready for Bug's Life or not.

We had the same experience....My three year old freaked out so bad and then would not go into any "show" for the rest of the trip...Almost three years later he still says how scared he was and he does not want to go on "ever again".

My 2 year old was afraid of it, and my 8 year old didn't like it. The entire time we were in my 2 year old sat on my lap and kept saying "I want to go home!" (awww...) But she snapped out of it as soon as it was over! LOL

I LOVE LOVE LOVE this attraction, but my 13 year old does not. She was 9 the last time she saw it and she did not like it. It completely freaked her out! It's intense and there are quite a few surprises. You can limit the surprise by having young children sit on your lap, or sit fwd on the seat. Can't wait for this one again!

You know your child best, but honestly with a child that young I might wait a few years. I am 24 years old with no bug phobia, and that show still makes me jump. I know that it is not real obviously, but it is still intense. It definitely would have traumatized me as a child, but then again when I was four I refused to ride The Haunted Mansion to0 (which is now my faqvorite ride).
