Is it too early to book a flight for January. And, are there any airlines I should avoid? Should I be worried about any airline going out of business between now and then?

Too early...maybe. If there will be any sales for January, they probably won't show up until late summer or fall.

airlines to avoid...you'll get a variety of answers to this on this board and everywhere else. Everyone's opinion is based on their own experiences. Search for flights that are within your time range, convenience and budget and go from there.

going out of business...unlikely unless there is another major terrorist attack or similar event to crash the economy.

I've been watching the fares since they first became available in March.

One Saturday morning in Early April (?), I lost all my spreadsheets with the prices I had just found the night before. When I checked Delta again, I found that the price had dropped $62 per seat overnight. Needless to say, we jumped in the car and drove out to the airport to get our three tickets for January and one for me for this August.

When I checked for my borther on Monday the prices had gone back up. When I checked the next weekend, they were down again and then back up on the following Monday. They haven't been anywhere near that low since!

For me, they were lower than I ever expected they would be from my choice airport. Also, when I got my tickets, I asked the agent if the price went down, could I get a refund. She said I could get a voucher good towards future flights. I didn't go into details, but it hasn't mattered because the flights haven't and probably won't go that low again.

In my experience - keep checking - often, but that's just my opinion.

We found tickets for $180 out of Kansas City. That's pretty reasonable, I think. Do you think they'll go lower? Are all airlines that way, if you book and prices go down, they'll give you vouchers? That would be great. I can't decide if I want to hold out for Southwest for $79, if available.

I'm assuming that it's $79 each way. That would be a savings of $22 per ticket.

Depending on the number of tickets and your airline preference, it may or may not be worth waiting. I don't know if all airlines give you money or credit when the prices go down. I think you should check into that. Also, when airfare goes "on sale" there may be restrictions to previously purchased tickets.

Make a list of pros and cons and then go with your decision. What is the most you'd spend with Southwest if they don't have the $79 fare available? For us the price would never go that low. At other airports it's a bit cheaper, but also involves another two hours travel time - not worth it for us.

Good Luck!
