Is it okay to put family first? (Response to royal family stuff)

While I can understand why people in the UK and Commonwealth are interested in the Royal Family, I don't understand why anyone else is. They are as dull as dishwater. I majored in history and still read a lot about history so I'm interested in them from a historical perspective, but the current members? Not so much.

From a historical perspective, they're extremley important in Canada -- not so much the current generation. All of the treaties that are used to settle land claims with the First Nations, Inuit and Metis were between the Crown and those nations. they predate the creation of Canada and completely bypassed the Parliament in England.

But I'm also interested in the theories being put forth by historians on the rise of authoritarianism and how important it is for democracies to have continuity. It has always been during periods of regime change that democracies were replaced by authoritarian governments. Incrementalism seems to be the safest way to go.

Edit: sorry if this sounds political. I didn't mean for it to be.

This!!

I started folllowing becuase of Diana.. and her clothes. LOL, even though I am no fashion plate... I have always loved following the fashion.

Love the clothes but I actually started following them when Diana began her campaign against landmines, which I was writing a paper on at the time -- she saved thousands of lives. and then I got more interested in history.

I started following when Diana first started dating Charles. We were contemporaries. I, and many others of our generation, lived through all the heartache - and some good times - with her and Charles, and we watched her children grow up.

Same for me. As a teenage girl myself, it was like watching a real life fairy tale. I set the alarm to be up and watch the wedding in the middle of the night (no VCRs back then). It was so sad watching it all fall apart.

I don't care either way, to be honest.

What I do see is some posters repeatedly bashing, bashing bashing. It borders on obsession. Maybe a little beyond obsession and into a dark place where some therapy is needed. Post after post after post with the same hate.........how can such hate exist for people that a person only knows as a public figure??? Scary.

Ummmm...maybe it’s because of their blatant lies, half truths, misleading statements, and never admitting that THEY have ever done anything wrong. I would have some sympathy if they owned their part in anything, but they seriously act like they are always the innocent victim in every single situation and that’s crap in my book.

Yeah, but that doesn’t really explain the need for the incessant posts that do nothing more than bash them. Of course everybody is allowed an opinion and if that’s theirs, great. However, when one only posts the same thing over and over again without adding to the conversation, it borders (or crosses) into obsessive. It also makes for a weak argument. Discussing like that will never get somebody else to see your point.

And all you do is defend them over rand over and over again...

And iff they go back several pages, they could answer that question and the posters like me, and other, wouldn’t have to repeat ourselves again and again.

There is this, but there is also the appearance that Harry has decided to turn his back on his entire family, cutting his kids off from their extended family. Sure Meghan is the one who had to be in the press every day this week (today it was about the work their charities are doing) but I can't get over the fact that they taped the interview on the same day that Philip went into hospital.

But more than that -- maybe this was always destined to be the case. I was talking with my mother over dinner, who has always known more about the current royals than I have. She is still horrified at the fact that Harry dressed up as a Nazi when he was much younger. Of course, Nazis have a bad name anywhere but the Queen lived through the blitz -- so he basically dressed as her enemy. My uncle was posted to London at that time and he never really got over what he saw there. Was that vindictive or was it just callous? Same for this stupid interview. It seems like he always underestimates the consequences of his actions and how they affect other people. Meghan is out to make money clearly, but Harry is something else.

I haven’t defended them over and over again. I said I have issues with people dismissing mental health issues, I have empathy for them and in fact my last post said there are no innocent parties in this. But go ahead with your narrative.
