Indiana Jones Themed Restaurant Coming to Disney Springs - The Hangar

Yeah, I get that. Alcohol = revenue. And there are plenty of places to drink in Disney. I just meant I don't get all the excitement over the theme. The idea seems lazy to me. Just my take on it, that's all.
Well there aren't many disney themed bars on property and Indiana jones is a well represented property in WDW so fans are excited. To be honest I barely know who jock is.

Exactly.

I could understand fans getting all yippee skippee over this if it was a true Indiana themed place, but it doesn't sound like that is the case here.

The adventurers club has a cult following of fans but doesn't go much farther than that. Pieces have sprinkled into trader Sams and I'm sure some small artifacts will show up in jocks.

Huh-- I've never been a cult member before. I think the AC's popularity may be larger than what shows up on an internet search.

Come on--- you have to pick one--- either be disappointed when the budget gets cut or cast dispersions when the budget get's overrun...
I see it more as a potential criticism that would arise from Burbank then from locked out himself (not trying to put words in his mouth though). Me personally, I love a lot of Rhodes work, just look at the amazing themed animal kingdom areas. However, the pit fall of being over budget is that the crown jewel of the park got scratched (beastly kingdom)

Either you know who he is or you don't, there is no barely. :)

This is a genius choice.

Jock is a secondary character, but a friend and compatriot of Indy. Because he is a secondary character, there are no detailed expectations, but there is a very clear persona communicated. The shirt, the banter with Indy, the snake, the plane: This guy is a wild adventurer that helps Indy from time to time. But because of the limited part he plays in the movies, that makes him a perfect character to expand upon. I am sure they had the idea and then searched for the character. Indy wouldn't have his own bar, he'd have a library. But Jock... You could see him turning a hanger in the middle of nowhere into a hangout for all his friends. A place where the crazy independent 1930's pilots hang out. And Indy might visit once in a while, or other characters. And who's to say he might not have a part in future movies? Although I doubt it.

My husband and I spent some time at the Adventurer's Club on our honeymoon in 1999 and we still have fond memories of those visits. We're both pretty eager for the Hangar as the theming has at least an echo of the old AC spirit, even if there won't be any Kungaloosh! :D

Incorrect...the right answer is in the middle...

Proper budgeting and proper quality

Have any idea how much animal kingdom was overbudget?

Yeah...I'll accept the words...

There has to be somewhere between "pure art" And a half completed park

Nervous about avatar? Should be...but they're probably not because Jim brought his check book...maybe.

How bout aulani? How'd the budget go on that?

No...rteetz was right...there were always 2 types of people in there: the ones that watched for 20 minutes and laughed (not much profit there), and the ones that were there open to close and yelled along (not much profit there)

Disney fans are a collection of "cults"...for sure... But some are small and some are HUGE

all evidence pointed to the AC of being the former type.

If you're gonna go with that tact... Would "Sulla's" or the "Marcus Brody Cafe" be a better choice?

...sure, using a secondary character keeps people/guests yearning to discover more. You hit it on the head regarding character expansion -it could go in any direction. I think it's a brilliant move.

I also think it was a great decision ... but really the Jock character fell right in Disney's lap. I still think the 'vintage hangar' eatery was a done decision from way back. With a last minute Indy re-theming to fit the Springs/Landing motif, how many other Indy pilot characters are there? And Jock shows up within the opening minutes of the 1st film! Great idea that may also owe a great thanks to serendipity ...

Maybe it's the fact that this place might not make your credit card shriek like I don't know The Boathouse. It will only squeek slightly. I have a person who is excited about it and I'm looking forward to this. And most of the bars on Disney aren't really themed persay. It's more like here's an area. For the most part tasteful and subtle. Trader Sam's is themed and very lively and fun.

As a member of the cult - I would agree with this as an apt description. However, I think the is larger than most people think - probably numbering in the tens of thousand to hundred thousand. Anyone that was at the AC in the months leading up to its closure could attest to that. We were there about a month before it closed and the place was PACKED, and it only got worse in those last weeks and months. The problem being that the cult - like the cult of Disney - is spread out across the world, and not sufficient to sustain. (Edit: It occurs to me that the AC is a "Cult" sect of the Disney "religion".)

Because as LOL points out, as a standalone club, financially it didn't work well at all. As part of the larger functional area of pleasure island, where there was a variety of entertainment it did work. Some people spent their cover charge to dance the night away at Mannequin's, while we were happy to sip our drinks at stools in the library watching the Balderdash Trophy being awarded. Once they opened the area up to all, the downfall of Pleasure Island occurred, which couldn't help but lead to the downfall of the Adventurer's Club. Which as I said would've never worked on it's own, nor would it work as dinner theater as some suggested.

Anyways, this clearly won't be an attempt at the Adventurer's club. I think it will be a "light theming" at best to Indiana Jones, much like Tony's Town Square is "themed" to Lady and the Tramp. If you are aware of the theme, you might notice some stuff related to it, but to the average park goer it may go completely over your heads. It's not like they're going to have Marion Ravenwood serving drinks and having drinking contests with the guests. (Though I'd definitely put my money on her.)

Excellent, Pete.

The new place will be about food and drinks first...which Disney is fully supportive of...most people are ok with...and even a "hater" like me that loves Indy (except the fridge) is fine with...

AC was not...and as you pointed out...once the ticket booths were taken down...it exposed all kinda warts to the bean counters.

They could have just kept the same ticket charge - unlike their half neglected themeparks - and still ran the place today with little issues.

But no...Eisner to blame on that. That was his baby and he let the stock price wonks start tinkering with it.

If you were there in 1999...I can assure you enough money was being made to pay for about all the bills for the next 10 years.

A bit off-topic, but I disagree. The problem with nightlife is that you need to have the hip thing, the next thing. Nightclubs don't last more than 10 years. Even though they are pretty much always the same, people that like the nightlife generally congegrate to the new.

PI was starting to flounder after that 10 year mark. What went wrong was Disney's response. Instead of mildly retheming the clubs and then re-opening as the "New Pleasure Island", they made a bunch of poor choices that progressively made things worse, starting with opening the Island to passers-by. (Thanks to West Side construction.) Instead they end up with the mess that it's all been for 6 years now.

I never really want or expect a return of AC, but I would love if they had an area with something similar to Citywalk. Different clubs with different styles/themes to them, so if you are in the mood to go out and have a good time in the evening, you have options. Perhaps this is a move in the right direction, but if they are just going to have a bunch of bar/resstaurants, that doesn't appeal to be much. Live Music. Dancing, Entertainment. (Maybe not AC, but Comedy Warehouse would be welcome by many.) We for many years were limited by kids, and have a few more of those years left, but would love their to be eventually a place we could go for a night out on the town. Just not sure the Jock's Bar is that.

Hey Disney, how about a Mos Eisley Cantina restaurant that turns into entertainment venue later in the evening?

That's the "crown jewel" of the sure to be announced billion dollar upgrade to studios that will be announced at D23...or on a quarterly report phonecall...or during WDW's 50th...or never

One of those ;)
