I said it! I'm doing it! This will be my first (and probably only!!) marathon! I just did the princess half and I have my sights on the full! now, 26.2 right now seems CRAZY to me but last august when i signed up for the princess, 13.1 seemed downright impossible!

so, whose in? will this be your first marathon? will you be like me and freaking out for the next 10 months??

my first half was at WDW in January (I've since signed up for 2 more!) and I like the symmetry of doing the first full there too!

yes! that's what i'm thinking too! nothing like having my first full medal be a MICKEY medal!!

awesome!! do you have races planned in the meantime? i think i will be doing the bronx half - there's one in august, right?

Oh yeah...

3/20 - NYC Half
4/10 - Scotland Run
6/25 - FRNY Pride Run
9/4 - Disneyland Half
10/1 - Wine and Dine (not confirmed but 99% sure)

And I'll be adding in some other NYRR races...at least 2 more for my 9+1. :D Probably the Mini and I'm not sure what else yet. Maybe the Wall Street Run because I'm crazy like that?

Bronx Half is 8/28. Given the whole 4 out of 5 borough HMs to get guaranteed entry into the NYC Half next year, it will probably fill quickly. I'll give you a heads up when I hear it's going to open.

That's me too! Though I am being sorely tempted to run the Marine Corps for HRC. Something about running that particular one for LGBT rights makes me grin and giggle and feel like I NEED to do it!! But I don't know. I keep hoping their slots will fill, but I keep getting emails and tweets about it.

I dunno, once you taste the full you may never go back!

Spend another week or two before really committing. It is not uncommon for one to say NO WAY ever again in the first hours of a breakthrough race distance; only to sign up for another or longer event in the week or two after the first event. I am not trying to discourage you but asking you to get through recovery of the Princess and back out on the road again. Make sure you have the fire and then sign up.

once you sign up, your mission is to NOT freak out, rather keep a good and strong base between now and when your training cycle starts up for the full. Training will be considerably easier if you do not fall back very far.

You will do well. It is one of the best first marathons out there. 2012 will mark the return of my brother to the marathon world. He was the inspiration for my doing my first race.... something like if my baby brother can do it, I can do it too. Looking at what I have on my plate, it should be #22 or 23 for me (worst case #21)

I'm in for Goofy in January. I was planning to do it before I even ran the princess, and running the 1/2 last week sealed the deal. If I'm going to run 39.3 miles in 2 days, I might as well run those miles at my favorite place to be :woohoo:

great advice. i've been thinking and rethinking the full for the last week or so and i'm totally in. i'm trying to think now about what i should do to keep a base. until the real training begins, i'm not sure how long my long runs should be.

that's great your brother is going to be running with you next year! my reason for starting to run is pretty similar. my friend runs marathons. i think she's done 7 or 8. and i just kind of thought one day, if she can do it, so can i. then once i started reading about disney races i knew there was a better reason to run! (to get down to WDW of course!)

YOU GO GIRL!!! that's amazing! after the princess half i was very sore for a few days. i can't imagine getting up and doing it all over again the next day..times two! how do you train for something like the goofy? i can't wait to follow you as you train! awesome!

I think I would like to run MCM one day (I live in Baltimore, so it's pretty close!) but not this year, since I'll be on the Dream and then in WDW at the end of October!

with the full being at the beginning of january, when does one usually start the "real" training? i "followed" a 12 week program for the half. how long are the full training programs?

i'm not feeling well this week and have taken a break from running until i feel better. hopefully that will be in the next day or so. definitely worried about keeping up my base!

I think I've read Coach say before (and I've read it elsewhere too) that marathon training takes about 6 months. So, we're starting in July. I'm hoping to maintain a good base between now and then--I'm running a half in mid-May, so that should help--which should make the transition a bit easier!

Yeppers,

12-18 weeks depending on the plan you select. I think Galloway starts you around July4. Now if one were to keep a base up and a long run of 9-13 miles then training can fall backwards just a bit.

Its a great time to shop for plans. Look at what worked (and more importantly what did not) for the recent race. Determine where or if you want to improve performance. Look around for a plan that fits your lifestyle and needs. Regardless of the hype, most any published training plan will get you to the start line if you follow the plan.

For a first timer, look for distance and a gradual build up. Many folks feel an emotional need to run the race distance and the Galloway plan will do just that. Other plans will also get your there but if one has any doubt about jumping from 20 to 26 miles then Jeff's plan is for you.

If you are a little more seasoned, make sure that you only run 3x a week. If that does not sound like enough, understand that I PR'd in all distances as a 51 YO and only ran 3x a week. That does not mean you do not work out 6x a week, but allow the leg muscle and joints time to heal between runs.

Eat a balanced diet. Do not think that I am a runner and move over to a 70% carb diet. Your performance will suffer as will your waist line. Keep to a well balanced 50% CHO diet and you will/may lose a little weight at the same time.

Hope this helps.

very interesting stuff here. in my training for the half i ran 3x week. that was about all i could do since i need to get someone to watch the kiddo. as the weather gets warmer i will do my short runs with him in the jogger (it's much harder to run that way too).

what is a 50% CHO diet? i could stand to lose 10 lbs so i'm interested in running for weight loss.

i trained only up to 10 miles for the half. that seemed ok for me. my goal in this marathon is to finish. time doesn't really matter. with a 2:22 half time, not sure what kind of time i'm looking at for a full? certainly not just twice that amount. more like twice plus..what? half hour? dunno.

I'm not sure what kind of a training plan to pick for the full. I've just succesfully upped my running to 4x a week on the advice of my PT. He said an extra day of running would actually help some of my overuse issues--I was skeptical, but it worked and I'm feeling stronger and faster than ever. I hope it will help improve my PR on the half. I've used Higdon plans in the past, so maybe I should just stick with what I know...

Oops - I often write in acronym then convert... this got by - CHO = carbohydrate. Essentially, I would suggest journaling your intake. The goal is to bring carbs down to 50% of your overall intake…. Even then, making sure the carbs on the plate are not processed. I swear that is an easy 10-20 lbs. for most of us.

The magic three are Galloway, Higdon and Bingham; not in any specific order.

I ran the 1/2 about 20 minutes slower than my first 1/2 marathon because of stops for character pictures. I think the waiting in line helped keep me from getting too sore, plus I walked around Epcot and wore compression socks the rest of the day. I was hardly sore on monday morning! My goal is simply to finish both races, so if I have to walk 1/2 the marathon because I'm out of gas, I will!
