I love credit cards so much! v7.0 - 2025 (see first page for add'l details)

Just in case I missed something in my research:

I am flying on an economy class Japan Airlines ticket from LAX-KIX and flying into LAX earlier in the day on Southwest.

I think under these circumstances the only thing that would allow any sort of lounge access is an Amex Plat (which I do not currently have) for the Centurion Lounge in that terminal. Can someone confirm that? (I really don't want to pay for a Plat but it might factor in my decision making as I am due for a new card soon).

My return flight is out of KIX and I don't see a Centurion Lounge there so I think that is out of the question completely.

I am hoarding URs for a 2027 trip but had to spend some today. DS is looking at colleges. I happened to realize a college a few hours away has Engineering open house in April so I quickly looked into hotels. Most of them are booked. Of course I have a Hyatt FMC, but the only Hyatt is sold out. Most of the rooms are $700-1000 per night :crazy2: I quickly booked a Best Western for 100k points for 2 nights. After work I decided we don’t need to spend 2 nights so canceled and found a Residence Inn for 36k for 1 night but it still killed me to use those points. $450 per night was a deal but for the middle of nowhere college town, ugh.

I think it’s so funny how we get attached to points and are reluctant to use them (I realize you have a long term goal, so that’s different).

This year I pretty much depleted my URs (2 trips to Kimpton Seafire helped with that!) and just now am getting some back. Normal spend, a 125k SUB for CSR, a referral and a Freedom SUB. I needed to use my CSR edit credit before 12/31 and finally booked a v nice hotel in Dublin for 2 nights. Used some URs to keep the cash portion less than $100 after Edit credit and travel credit. Great hotel for our needs but STILL hated to see those URs go.

For whatever reason, I don’t mind burning my Cap1 points, lol.

Mostly I would rather use my stock of URs worth 1.25 for a resort in Hawaii than a room in central Illinois. I do have some Citi TY points plus various hotel/airline points that I’m
more willing to spend for sure.

good to know, thank you! That said.... I'm looking at various options- It seems to be cheaper to book each flight separately,as a one way and cobble together my trip vs booking r/t or multi city. Is this standard? Aaaannnd say you had AA and AS points, same flight, on AA pretend the flight costs 10k points, on AS pretend it's 15k. Which would you choose, is there a tipping point when it's smarter to use one vs the other? (beyond the surface points cost, since points are worth different amounts)

Interesting that roundtrip is more, I would think it's the same as booking one ways. I like booking awards as one ways since it's easier to change. Plus sometimes I book them with different airlines.

I value Alaska and AA the same, so I would pick the cheapest. I think the value difference between airline miles is not so large that there's an obvious answer. Like if it was 10k Hyatt vs 15k Hilton, of course I'd pick Hilton.

Quick question as I try to decide on a card for all of the end of the year expenses: between Citi and BoA, which is less picky about inquiries?

What cards are you considering?

I think Citi is more inquiry sensitive. But they seem to have relaxed it a bit for the Strata Elite. I was approved with 3/6 when usually the advice is 0/6 or 1/6. They don't like very recent inquiries.

The Alaska biz seems very hard to get approved for because they might count biz cards by pulling D&B.

For LAX, I think an American Admirals Clubs pass might work since JAL is oneworld. You can get this with Citi Strata Elite, which also comes with Priority Pass that you can use at KIX.

Not sure an Admirals Club pass will work with JAL. We recently tried to use our JAL boarding pass to enter the Admirals club with an Admirals pass at SFO, and it didn't work. They wanted an AA specific boarding pass (which thankfully we did have, so we did get in), but they would not accept the JAL boarding pass. So your mileage on that may vary...

My brick on my home (that I own) is an UGLY pink. Pink brick!!! The original owners had so many different color choices and they chose Pepto pink!! When I bought it - it had all white trim. We've updated the trim paint, door paint, garage door paint and colored gutters and they're all shades of a brown and blue. We put a new roof on that's a grey/black. Going to add colored shutters soon. The house actually looks REALLY classy now. But the pink -- I still know that it's there. Although it's no longer the only thing I see when I roll up. lol
Have you ever considered painting the brick? Several houses in our neighborhood have recently painted their brick white/cream and so far it looks really nice. Not sure how long it lasts though.

Unfortunately Chase has added an Amex type pop up and/or denying cards if you have held them before. It’s been happening with the INK cards too
I've been wondering about this. Is it pretty hit and miss for Chase Ink approvals if you've had an Ink before, or are some people getting approved? If you do get the popup, is it like Amex where you have the choice to proceed without the SUB or is just a denial? Do they still pull your credit? Thanks!

There's a DP thread on r/churning. Starting this month, it looks pretty sure that if you've had a no fee Ink (CIU/CIC) then you'll get pop-up for both even if you haven't had the specific card. If you've had CIP, then you'll get pop-up on CIP. Exception seems to be LLCs might not get pop-up.

It's like Amex where you can cancel the app with no hard pull.

IDK.... I think I'd love a pink house and lean into making it look like a Minnie Mouse house :rotfl2:

Reading through the thread, seems like the Ink train is dead for SSN/sole prop (after 12/1). Very sad.

Ok thank you. That stinks though :(

I haven't because our HOA laws state absolutely no painting of the brick. It would honestly look very very super duper fantastic with German schmear!

They totally nerfed my plan and I have no idea what card to get. Done with my strata spend, no retention offer on my plat so I'm just using whatever makes sense for now. But my car ins renews next month so it would be nice for that.

r/churning and amex have been talking about equifax theworknumber.com as something they (may be same poster, I don't pay that much attention) think amex is using that is triggering the fr's.

I signed up for an account and it's wild. I get paid weekly and it's all there. Does show that I put eating make on my app and I don't include my bonuses.

Only amex has looked at it, 3 times since Nov 2024.
I have been reading about all the FRs and shutdowns over on r/amex. Not good news if it's true. :(
