I Appreciate DisWorld More after Six Flags

We have made 2 trips 2 DWorld, fall 2002 and fall 2004. As much fun as we had, I still couldn't get over the cost of it all. Well, we just took a vacation to our closest (2 hour drive) Six Flags, Great America in Gurnee Illinois. I hadn't been there in probably ten to fifteen years.

First, there are no on site hotels, so you have to pick whereever you want, and see if they run shuttles, then decide if you like there schedule or drive yourself. Parking is $10 a day or $15 for preferred, whatever that is. Even if you have a season pass, you pay for parking.

The single day tickets are around $45 they have multiple day ticket deals and season passes, a "deal ?" at $99. Tickets include entrance into their Hurricane harbour water park. Pick your ticket and go. Our season passes gave us a coupon book, we only used a few of them. Some freebies, some 2 fers, some % off. And some for your friends admission when you bring them.

The food prices are about the same, but it's all pretty much concession stuff, some better than others, no fancier or gourmet choices. We did like the Saloon lunch character buffet. $13 adults, $9 kids. Food was good, BBQ beef, hotdogs, chik strips, sides, soda, dessert. Got a little show and pics with Bugs, Daffy, Foghorn Leghorn, & Sylvester.

The Circus Magnifico, no extra charge, show was pretty good. Chinese acrobatics and a little Cirque Du ..... mixed together.

My beefs.

1) They didn't have enough of the Looney Tunes or rides characters around the park for kids to see, get pics with.

2)The closing parade on Monday night, the last float broke down, makes you wonder about the rides.

3)The amusement park lost power on Tuesday for a few hours due to a Comed problem, now 6 flags didn't have to do anything, but they did give a free days admission to those leaving the park, doesn't help if you already have a season pass, hmm, might sell them. We were only there 4 hours and the day was shot. Didn't want to wait to see when they got power stabilized after two hours of no rides. We went to Gurnee Mills Mall for the rest of the day. At least we had AC and food and drinks.

4) Clean up a little bit folks. The park has been around for a while and it shows. Just not the same as Dworlds cleanliness. We noted that a few rides/areas had signage that a paint company was a sponsor, well they might want to ship some of it over and use it to spruce up some of the park.

5) Park workers. I don't know what Dis pays, but online you can find job listings for Six Flags, many of the workers earn $7-$8 an hour. Here in the midwest its a seasonal job, not year round. It shows. Not many older, wiser, experienced, retirees working. Too many young kids, no offense, but hardly anyone looked old enough to be an asst manager at a fast food rest, let alone working and supervising employees at an amusement park (hey I worked many teen years in the fast food industry so back off ).

6) they might want to rethink the water park thing. to enter the water park you have to go in through the regular parks main gate. Now they supposedly have a dress code for the amusement park and for the water park, but we saw numerous boys and a few young men walking around in swim trunks with no shirts. Girls and women wearing basically bikinis with SHORT shorts/skirts. It just seemed kind of (fill in the blank ) tacky, cheesy, redneck, trashy, just plain wrong. More like a local carnival than a Disney Class amusement park.

7) Some of the shows were okay to good, but do not match the quality of Disney shows. Again, I know they only run seasonally up here, it shows.

The Disney World experience just seemed special in comparison. In conclusion, the trip to orlando may take longer and cost more, but it is becoming clearer to me that the old saying still holds true, you get what you pay for.

INTERESTING...we are from downstate...and have been thinking about going to SixFlags Gurnee before my son's next soccer tournament..make it a long weekend...Six Flags on Thursday/Friday...and soccer during the weekend!

UMMMMMM

Gotto love the mall though!---in November, it is an all-girl weekend at Gurnee Mills for 3 days!!!

You could purchase a parking pass for $25. (At least this is how it works at SF Great Adventure). This hangtag is good for parking at SF and at Hurricane Harbor (separate gate admission at this Six Flags).

If you have the hangtag, parking is free. The hangtag paid for itself by the 2nd visit.

I've never been to the Illionios park. I'm sorry to hear about the power issue though. That stinks!

I agree. Six Flags was like "BLAH" after WDW. We will be returning to WDW to get, as you say, what we pay for. :) :sunny:

Yes some do look really young. Do judge some by the looks because they look young they could be in there thirtys. But look under 18.

It amazes me that people comapre Six Flags and WDW they is two different parks. It seems that alot people just like bash Six Flags because they can't get WDW that year get there fix.

I happen like Six Flags better because get a season pass be home before dark and not get hotel room.

To experience something even worse than what you described, go to Paramount Carowinds in the Carolinas. Of course, no parade or big shows...but same type of park workers, same guest clothing issues, not very clean, water park is always overcrowded- usually has to shut down a specific water area due to unclean circumstances, it used to allow smoking (which may have changed this year). You can do the season pass thing, BUT..one year they were having issues with parents buying their children season passes and dropping them off like it was a day camp each day to avoid babysitting for the summer. -Unsupervised young teenagers, etc. running around the park.

We chose not to do the season passes this year out of frustration for all of the mentioned above. If we want "fun", we just save up for Disney- Worth the trip and the money!! :earsboy:

I wasn't "bashing" Six Flags. I was just noting that personally Disney World just seems like a better overall vacation. The experience at Disney World seemed more special, especially since we aren't fortunate enough to go Florida every year.

I understand that it's not a fair comparison, when you look at the attractions, Six Flags Gurnee, has many coasters/thrill rides. They aren't open year round. Yes, it's much more convienient for me 2 hours by car to 6 Flags, 20 to Disneyworld, and a season pass is cheaper, but can't I at least expect a somewhat clean, relatively nice looking place to spend the day?

We might go back to Six Flags again this summer to get some more use out of our passes, but we will not be staying up there again. And will be counting our pennies until we can afford another trip to Orlando.

Great America and Disney World don't even BEGIN to compare each other. Disney World is a total experience, a real vacation. Great America is just something to do in the summer. I don't know of too many people who consider it a vacation at all. It's mostly just people from the 'burb's, city and Wisconsin who are doing something fun on the weekend with their kids. Also its a lot of teenagers (I used to be one of them) who have season passes and just go to hang out. The Disney World rides are total attractions/experiences. Great America just has rides. You can see the parking lot from the rides, you can see the employee areas...there is just zero magic/atmosphere. That's one place I think I'll be content to never go to again. I do like Fright Fest though.

Great America in Gurnee has 2 hotels across the street from it (walking distance). They are listed on the SixFlags site (Comfort Suites & Country Inn & Suites). I live minutes away from Gt America & agree it is completely different than Disney. It is more of a thrill seeker park - lots of big roller coasters. It does have cleanliness & staffing issues.

We went to GA 2x this summer. Once in June and it wAs really fun, low crowds, clean...only did the theme park, no water park. Went back in late July on a Friday...jammed, attempted to do the water park, but clouds rolled in and it got COLD! The water is NOT heated...and the lines for things were crazy and the wave pool was closed due to crowd control issues...a smoothie was $7....
We knew it was not WDW..as a matter of fact we had dodged GA for 6 years 'cause we figured we'd be bummed. However, the kids asked friends to go, something we could not do spur of the moment to WDW., and they loved that. The coasters are fun, but you do wait for them! I take Bonine for motion sickness...has always worked at WDW, Star tours, Mission Space, tea cups...no problem... I rode Raging Bull and about 3/4 thru, I was sweating it! DH took one look as I was not laughing anymore and knew what was up (or almost up ;) ) The hotel situation is just that, hotels, not resorts, but they are right there, closer than WDW ones, but there is no monorail, WDW transportation, lush grounds and theming to enjoy along the way. Either drive or walk which can be a hike and not too safe with little ones in the traffic. We are a little more than an hour away so we do not stay in a hotel. We pack a cooler for lunch and go to the car to eat and then pay for dinner or vice/versa. I was not crazy about the water park....too spread out and the extra charge of $8 for a inner tube single or $12 for a double is pretty steep. That is how they handle fast pass at the water park...wait in line for a tube for the lazy river, or if you have a rental tube, join in mid way down.
The staff was hit or miss..young, yes, but most appeared to be responsible, all locks were checked on our rides, DS is just 55" and he was double checked more than once to make sure he was legit, which is how it should be. The lifeguards were pretty much on top of things...they had to rescue 2 people from the wave pool while we were there...you do need to be a strong swimmer for that, but the guard handled it very quickly, safely and most importantly...saved the girl.
We only saw 2 characters, and no parades being done when we were there. Security was more strict than at WDW if you can believe it..you handed your bag thru a metal detector to a security guard, then you stepped thru, then your bag was gone thru by hand by security. I had no problem with this.
The power outtage is unfortunate, just like the cold weather for the water park, but it happens.
Heck, you camE home with the best souvee of all, a better appreciation for WDW!
Glad you gave it a try, while not an inexpensive outing, it is easy to get to, and can be done on short notice, and usually rescheduled if weather looks bad..those are all plusses of a neighborhood theme park. OK, Here's where all you lucky people living a stones throw from WDW get to gloat :earboy2:
You lucky ducks!

I was going to start a thread about the same thing only comparing Kings Island. However, I realized that these parks can not even begin to compete with Disney--even on a down day for WDW! I just don't set my expectations too high and I have a good time.

Wait a minute here .... your 6 Flags has a character meal? They have a parade? Characters walk around the park? You have shows (plural)?

Come to our 6 Flags ... no character meal. Bugs Bunny pops out in one area for a short amount of time. You're lucky if you get a photo w/Bugs. And, he's the only character we've ever seen. Show (singular) consists of an indoor Batman show w/motorcycles that is loud and reeks of gasoline and motorcycle exhaust. I'm always afraid of going deaf and getting asphixiated. No parades here ... a laser light show, but it stinks.

If it weren't for the two free passes we have from school, I'd never go there.

Ask Daxx ... he'll tell you that I call 6 Flags "Not Disney". There's a reason for that!!!!

We also took a trip to Six Flags Great America. I have not been at this park since I was in College. I was amazed at the lack of rides for little children. I guess I had never thought to look for these type of rides before (going as a thrill seeker). With a 4 and 6 yo in tow, there were only a handful of rides they could ride. Because of the cool weather, water rides were out, as well as the water park. We rode the Merry -go- Round and I was amazed at the garbage that was collected on the carpet. How hard would it be to get a vaccuum and clean it up. I was not going to compare it to WDW, because I knew that it was not, but I ended up saying more than a few time how much I prefered WDW to Six Flags!! I do not think I will be back at least until the kids get a bit bigger.

I live about 1 hour from the park, so I go frequently (last year I had a season pass, in fact). I don't bother to compare it WDW, there's just no point. I only go because they do have some kick-butt roller costers. But lately I've had reason to question their ride safety, so I'm not sure if I'll be going back. Haven't been back this year, mainly do to my insane schedule, but I don't know if I even want to go next year.

Which ride safety issues? We were possibly taking the neice/nephew there for one day before schol starts back up, using our free tickets we got for there admission.

I am in Central IL, have you ever been to the one in St.Louis??? same deal....but no parade, or charcter meal. just outdated, dirty.I can't bring myself to spend the money when it could be saved for a trip to disney. my dd doesn't like rollar coasters .....not much else to do....1 log ride. :confused3 :confused3 have a magical day! :wizard:

Well, it's more a gut feeling than something specific. I've noticed more seats in ride cars (we're talking the big roller coasters, not the kiddie rides) that are roped off because they are broken. I noticed rougher rides on coasters that used to be as smooth as ice. I was stuck on a ride 2 or three times for mechanical problems last season, the first time that's ever happend in all the years I've been going. There haven't been any accidents at SFGA that are the fault of the park in a long time, but I just have this feeling that something is going to give.

Illinois has some of THE most stringent theme park ride requirements and inspections in the nation. If the state inspectors think there is a problem, they'll shut the ride or the park down in an instant. So it could be that it's just me being more nearvous in my old age (ha ha) rather than there being a true problem.

If you are sticking to the smaller rides or kiddie rides, then don't worry about it. On the bigger rides, you'll just have to use your judgement.
