Hurricane Matthew Closes WDW - Reopens Saturday, October 8th

My husband works at one of the major theme parks in Orlando (he is not letting me say which one), but is saying that they have a "ride it out crew" that he was asked to volunteer for, which is staying at the park to keep things operational, assess damage, etc. So it's not like no one is there, there is always SOMEONE there to know what is going on. Also I am a dialysis nurse, and though they closed our clinic for Friday, we were given curfew passes that will allow us to come into work once the hurricane is passed to treat patients. So the curfew is to keep those who it is not necessary to travel off the streets.

Interesting stuff on the Weather Radar app, you can see it veered off a bit to the East earlier, I wonder why this hasn't been more widely reported

Weather channel did say it took a jog, and now they are talking about how the storm is reconfiguring. Something with the eye wall getting larger, but this will mske the strong winds extend further out even more. So that little bit to the east isn't making that much of a difference. At least that's the way I understood it

I see that someone paid $13 for a boxed lunch and others taking about how crazy that is of Disney...

Yep

Guests (and locals) are being told to stay off the roads, so we are at the mercy of Disney. Also being told to remain in our rooms until tomorrow evening.

$9.99 for tomorrow's breakfast.

$12.99 for tomorrow's lunch. And the apple is bruised and mushy ALL the way around. Not exaggerating one bit, gross.

Exactly, if they have to report to work, they get a pass. My husband use to work for the newspaper and after Charley hit us, he had to drive thru Punta Gorda, which had curfew, and we had curfew. He was allowed to go.

You are better off saving the yogurt for lunch and having the sandwich for breakfast in case you lose power. Yogurts are surprisingly pretty shelf-stable (if not as tasty) for short periods, whereas that lunch meat won't be.

This is Disney. Everything is expensive. Moreover, these CM's are rushing to make all of you something you can eat that won't go bad over the next 36 hours. You know, the people who can't go home because they work at a resort with people who are choosing to ride out a hurricane. They aren't on vacation. They are scared they will be losing their family, friends and everthing they own while people are angry they are getting charged high money at a vacation resort.
Yes, it's overpriced. If it's too much, dont give Disney your money. You could have grabbed a taxi earlier today to a grocery store, gotten chips, salsa, fruit and other food throughout the resort on your way to your room. You could have gone by Earl of Sandwich.
It's truly awful that everyone is stuck in such a scary situation. I hope everyone stays safe and well. But I think there are bigger concerns than getting price gouged during a hurricane.

People are complaining about getting ripped off from Disney for a $13 boxed lunch that is worth $2. Nobody is blaming the poor CM's that have to work and are away from their families. People are complaining about the company that is Disney. It's not that easy in a situation like this to go and buy food when most have no cars and Disney is taking advantage. Don't blame people for complaining. Why can't people voice their displeasure?

I am not sure that I have seen emphasized much that after the storm blows through, there will likely be huge issues: power outages are possible for days, downed trees and damage to windows, roofs and other infrastructure. It is only the most hopeful scenario that things are back up to speed on Sat and Sunday like nothing happened.
Yes. The aftermath of a storm this powerful and huge is going to be unreal. I know Disney is phenomenal at cleaning up and getting back to normal, but I'm not sure they've dealt with anything quite like this. When I think of all the trees that are likely to be down all over that property, and damage to signs, fences, and other structures that cannot handle the brunt of a storm like Matthew, I get a sad vision of a Disney World like none of us has ever seen. All those RVs and campers at Fort Wilderness? I know the people have been evacuated, but that campground is bound to be quite a mess with downed trees and limbs all over those RVs and campers. It has to be understood that even with less powerful storms, it can take WEEKS to get an area even close to back to normal. Disney may be able to keep power going and be pretty self-sufficient for a few days, but areas outside of Disney will not be so fortunate. And eventually, just like everyone else, Disney will need food and supplies replenished to sustain its guests. If the areas surrounding Disney are hit with catastrophic damage, that could be an issue.
Not trying to be an alarmist, and certainly there will be help provided to all who need it down there, but I think it's a bit naive t expect to roll up into WDW on Saturday or even Sunday (or maybe even after that) and find things running smoothly. I could be wrong, and I hope I am. I think the people there will be safe, but I wouldn't expect to be riding 7DMT and watching Hoop Dee Doo on Saturday or Sunday, if you know what I mean.

I think it's nuts that they are charging money for boxed meals. Would they really let people trapped by the storm go hungry?

I also think there will be a lot of damage to the parks from this one. I expect to see damage when I go next month and it would not surprise me to see some ride or habitat closures for a few months. I really hope they are keeping the animals safe at AK.

I'm just kind of shocked how many people waited until the very last minute. Eh but what do I know. I'm a worst case planner so if there is a credible warning or threat about something I tend to plan. Had we been in Orlando this week I may have gone to a park this morning and if I did I would have been grabbing a few grab and go options on my way back to the resort. I can't believe people saw oh it'll be open to midnight and didn't realize that meant it'll be slammed until midnight.

They weren't allowed to leave the RVs and tents etc at the campgrounds. They were all moved to a specific parking lot.

That is probably going to happen. I hate soggy sandwiches.

Looks better then our Caribbean beach boxed lunches, I would rather the m&m's lol - also the Food Court has been a mad house with over hour and half waits!!! I also waited over hour and half to confirm my room extension since flight was cancelled and can get out till Sunday!!!

Be Safe all!

Hurricane Hermine was only a category 1 when it hit us head on in Tallahassee and we were without power for a week. I can't imagine what this could do if it gets close enough to the coast or God forbid hit it.

Not defending Disney at all but I could see an all inclusive resort supplying food for free but at a resort where the food isn't included in the price I imagine they think some may be getting their own food or buying it. If they just gave it away people would complain when prices go up double the next year. I do think they are significantly over charging but I don't have a problem with them charging for the boxes. Those cold boxes with no drink easily should have been about half what they are charging.
