Hurricane Matthew Closes WDW - Reopens Saturday, October 8th

Don't know if this will help anyone but my local news just reported that condo rentals in Gulf Shores will be 50% off for evacuees over the next few days. All the hotels along interstate 10 in our area (Mobile AL)are full. Gulf Shores is only 30 about minutes south of the interstate.

On a positive note I have a friend that works at food and beverages. They closed a bit earlier than expected but gave everyone going into Pizzafari free pizzas and gave cookies and grapes and yogurts and chocolate milk, chips, apple sauce. Just the stuff we already had on hand.

Transportation
  • Tolls suspended on Florida toll roads in counties where there are evacuations.
  • Amtrak has temporarily suspended train service through the South through Saturday.

I'd like to add: Don't be afraid to strike up conversations with other resort guests when possible. Everyone will have their own story to tell and the experience will likely ease your stress as much as it eases theirs.
We were there through Charlie and made friends. We went to the park with them the next day and kept in touch with them after we left.

Especially for locals, any thoughts on us arriving no later than around 9am? It kills me to think of not getting there til Saturday night or even later:sad: It can't be helped and safety is top priority. But we've been looking so forward to this for a year...
I'm not a local but when we went under curfew for the flood the police were stopping everyone they saw and wanting to know where they were going. you can be charged with a misdemeanor. Not worth it to me.

I have been reading this thread since it started and appreciate all the info provided. Disney resorts (at least ours ) has not been the best at giving updates. Actually, whatever message was left on my room phone has been unheard because there is just a busy signal when trying to connect.

We are staying at Port orleans riverside. Oct 1 to 8. Who knows if we we get ourid flight on Saturday. We skipped parks today. Has rained off and on. Food court here is insane. At noon it was full and took almost 2 hours to get salads. Metc some great people in line. :) as of right now... no rain, light breeze. Line for food is all the way past the guest check in. Basically to arcade doors. If you are familiar with the resort, you know this is really long. The actual cafe area looks like a standing room. There is no where to move. Big thanks to all employees working the cafe and everywhere else.

Let's hope for the best. As long as wearly are safe, we are ok. Wish I could find out if national car rental will charge crazy prices to drive our car home to pa and drop it there.

Would post pics but files are too large.

OKAY ................ 2 days of watching all this stuff,
now seeing the prediction is not looking good for my home

I really need to turn off my swirling head a few hours.
Heading to TRIVIA where I am not allowed to use my phone even.

I'll be back ... trying to help distracts all my angst over my home.
Get to your spot, hunker down and try to chill.
Be back later :wave2:
Try to stay safe. And thanks for all the posts and updates. I am sure a lot of people over in Orlando or going have appreciated it.

Update for Orange County: Sheriff Demings just announced a curfew from 10pm tonight until 7am SATURDAY morning except for official / legit reasons. Violators are subject to arrest

Thanks for posting this. They were giving food away like this in the resorts in 1999 when we were there during Floyd. Glad to see it is still happening in places during Matthew.

I really like seeing the pictures and getting reports from those of you who are there now. It is helpful to see what is going on, especially those of us who have family there now. thank you for taking the time to do this. Please keep the updates coming if you can, stay safe. We are here if you need us.

I agree. My husband is there on a conference. He was suppose to stay in an RV at the campgrounds but when he got there on Wednesday they didn't let him check in but they moved him to CSR which was great. But, I'm barely hearing anything from him and I don't want to bother him while he is trying to balance getting some work done and figuring out preps. So this thread has given me a lot of insight and made me feel better. Keep it coming please!!!!

Looks like it depends on where people are at the moment. I have some friends local who are getting bands of rain and wind and others that are only seeing slight wind.

Now Miami on the other hand is getting slammed right now. My family in Boca already left for higher ground and the Boca beach area was told to evacuate. Just because it isn't bad now doesn't mean it won't be bad in a few hours as the bands move further north.

Also for those who have never experienced a hurricane where it makes landfall really means jack. There is no "good" side of a hurricane. There is the bad side and the worse side. Although the winds may only be tropical storm level winds in the WDW area they will be consistent winds. Even when it is just a thunderstorm that causes the winds they come and go with in an mere hour or two. This hurricane is being shown to show high winds for several hours somewhere around 12-24. Don't mistake the calm before the storm for it not happening. I'm not trying to scare anyone I'm just trying to tell you that it may seem like it is all for nothing now but things can and probably will get worse as the night progresses.

best summary - no good side - a bad side and and worse side!
