I dont know what to do.. Im really having a moment right now.
We live right outside of Baton Rouge, so storm surge isnt a issue, but they are predicting very very high winds here in the area, close to what Betsy was and for that storm, gusts went as high as 95mph. That really scares me.

I'm with ya. We live in Ascension, and I've never even considered evacuating in my life, but this one has me thinking about it. I was aggravated and annoyed about Gustav a couple of days ago, but now I'm downright worried. Especially now that they've said it won't be taking that western turn. It's forecast to head right over us, and it may be a 4.

I'm thinking that after church, I'll pack the car with my stuff that I couldn't bear to lose and just be ready. Just in case we decide to leave. We have a camp near Natchez, so I guess we'd go there. It will still be stormy, but it won't be as bad as here. Hopefully the back roads won't be too crowded to get there.

I have to say, people are really getting prepared early this time. The stores have been very crowded around here since Wednesday. And more importantly, it seems like the powers-that-be are getting their act together early.

It centralizes the hurricane forecasts from dozens of websites, including the projected paths, radar, satellite imagery, and "spaghetti models" - it's really helpful and interesting.

Wow!! I'm watching the news right now and they're saying New Orleans will not even have shelters in the city. Everyone has to go....period! Gosh I hope all get out then safe and sound.

When you live in a bowl, its foolish to think that it will never flood again. I don't understand ANYONE who decides to stay & put other people (rescue) in danger because of it.

Transportation & days notices were given. No excuses for staying this time. ESPECIALLY after last time. You cannot protect property against a storm. Risking your life to try to do so is stupid.

I really don't like the typical anger towards victims we see after hurricanes. Your DH should get out of the rescue biz if you feel this way, IMHO


Honestly, I lived through many hurricanes and we never, ever have left.Betsy, Camile, Andrew...you name them , we stayed in our home. Lost some tree limbe, roof shingles, no electricity for a few days.

However-after Katrina, I agree that if I lived south of Pontchatrain lake, I would leave.

My SIL found a hotel in Katy Texas, she may leave this AM with my MIL who does not want to go-driving 9 hours in a car with her hip problems would be torture for her and she is resisting.

My IL's are evacuating today. They used to stay for storms, but not after Katrina. Luckily they were out of town anyway when Katrina hit, but thankfully their home suffered little damage. But who knows what will happen this time. We're really feeling anxious. I just wish this storm would go away.

He hasn't been called yet, but I wouldn't be surprised if they were sent again.

Who are you talking to? Is this a general statement toward the people of New Orleans and coastal parishes who elected to ignore the mandatory evacuations and stay or someone on this thread? If it's someone in this thread you're way off base. Those in mandatory evacuation areas have left or are in the process of leaving. Those of us staying or who are on the fence are inland and have received no recommendations to evacuate.

We're staying here in Denham Springs. We have family from Lafourche parish coming stay with us since they are under mandatory evacuation. Lots of our family from that area, however, aren't leaving. My grandparents do not want to leave, they want to be close to my grandpa's hospital since he needs blood every month or two. They are staying with my mom's brother, who works for the city and has to stay. Thankfully, my cousins with their young families that originally told me they were staying have decided to leave.

Just heard from my inlaws...they are leaving today too! So that just leaves my grandparents, my mom's brother and his family, and my mom's other brother and his wife.

HMMMM... we have never left for a storm in my life. As i said before there has never been a reason, but I am really wondering now if we should get the heck out of dodge. Im getting a tad freaked out!

We're headed to my grandma's near jackson Ms. We'll keep an eye out from there and head north east via back roads if it's course comes more our way.

We're loading up right now. A little late I know, but DH is STILL running back-ups for the computer system at work. Should leave in the next hour or so. I'll be headed up your way to avoid I-55 as much as possible.

I know they say never go east, but I think your huntsville idea was better. There are still rooms in chattanooga too. Gus is predicted to turn right in to alexandria last time I looked. (Plus, it'll be a straight shot down to WDW from alabama/tennessee! )

I don't feel that this is the thread for that kind of criticism. I also agree with Loverly that your husband should get out of the rescue business if you feel this way.

We heard Ray nagin on the radio tonight. I can't believe what I heard! First off...his primary mesage was get the h*// outta town. Then he goes on to say that if you stay to make sure you have your ax with you...because you WILL need it to chop through your roof when the water rises! The mayor of New Orleans basically just told the world that the levees will fail again. Some of you New Orleans area folks help me out. I so could be wrong here, but wasn't it him who was saying that the levee repairs were going good?!?


Don't get me wrong...I agree with everything he said. (Now THAT should make the news! ) I just can't believe he said it!

It's not the levees might not hold. It's the simple fact of math. Leeves are mostly 15 to 20 feet tall. They are expecting water surges close to 30 feet or higher in the New Orleans area. The water could be 10 to 15 taller than the levees.

My husband must stay, he works for Exxon plastics and will have to be at work , no excuses.
While I normally travel with my lil one alone, im just really worried about the trip taking much longer than normal and what if something happens?!
Im thinking I will head to Huntsville Al. Guess ill just pack for WDW too since we leave next Tuesday , Ill just go from Huntsville to WDW .

I am between Birmingham and Huntsville. I can tell you that most of the hotels between B'ham and the MS state line are full. I know that all the hotels here are full. I haven't heard anything about the H'ville area hotels.

I know there are shelters open in the B'ham and H'ville areas.

Ya'll keep us in your prayers. We are on the Mississippi Gulf Coast preparing to evacuate late tonight or early tomorrow. There aren't any hotels available for 4 or 5 hrs in all directions so I don't know where we are going yet. There are still a lot of people here who have not recovered from Katrina yet

I just found a Comfort Inn in Defuniak Springs FL, located about 45 minutes out of Crestview available with a check in date of Sept 1st to check out Sept 7th....does that help...is that too far for you? You may be gone already, but I figure it couldn't hurt to help.

I know they say not to go east, but since we are only predicted for some tropical storm warnings I can look for hotels for anyone interested if you think you can get this way without too much hassle. Please let me know...I'm MORE than happy to help. I remember Opal, Ivan and Dennis, so I understand what you all are going through...I've been there.

I just looked at the tracker on Weather Underground...yee gads....it's coming in a 4....that's what they predicted for Ivan but thank goodness he dropped to a 3 coming in...wasn't much better....but could have been SO much worse. I'm scared for all of you...ESPECIALLY those in the New Orleans area....I just don't want to see another Katrina. Best to all of you.

This is not the time to assume everyone on this board is so ignorant that we would actually stay put! We have all evacuated to other locations; a few of us are staying with family in the Baton Rouge area... and now we are worrying. So take your soap box somewhere else!
