How well does Magic Express work?

The Unofficial Guide mentioned that there've been problems with ME in the past, with lost luggage and the like. Has anyone experienced these problems and, if so, were they resolved quickly? I realize that even airlines lose luggage - it's not as if Disney alone has this issue - but I wonder if it's worth it to use Magic Express? Possibly I'm worrying too much, lol - I tend do to that.

Thanks!

We have never had any issues with ME. I'm thinking it is much more likely for the airline to lose your bags than for ME. I'm sure some people have had issues with ME at times (like everything else), but we think it is a great service and will continue using it. We usually get to the resort about 90 minutes after we get off the plane, and our luggage is usually there a couple of hours later.

We used ME for our trip last June and had no problems at all. I should say that we are carry-on only people so we had our luggage with us and retrieved it right after we got off the bus.

I love this service. So nice to sit back while someone else drives! It starts off the vacation perfectly.

We have never had any misplaced luggage using ME. If you have worries

Note*** You can also handle your own bags instead of having ME do it for you
1. Do not put the ME tags on your bags
2. Pick up your bags at the airline baggage claim as you normally would
3. Roll you bags to the bus.
4. The driver will help load them underneath
5. When you arrive at the resort the driver will hand you your bags
6. If your room is not ready..roll your bags to Baggage Services and they will store them till you return or call for them to be brought to your room

We do this often

I have used ME three times and never had any problems. The luggage showed up in the room within the 3 hour time frame and the wait for the bus was reasonable. I have no concerns about using ME. However as the PP indicated you can alwaus handle you own luggage if that is what is worrying you.

I did not totally love the ME when I did it. I did enjoy getting right off the plane and skipping baggage claim. The wait for a bus to teh resort was reasonable.

However, we landed at around 8pm. We had two bags. The first came at Midnight, the second at 1am. This was disruptive and unpleasant.

I would use ME again only if:
a) I picked up my own bags and brought them to the bus or
b) if I was arrivng at noon and going straight to teh park and could wait that long for bags to appear.

Thanks for all of your help! I have a couple of months to decide- I'm sure I'll end up using ME because assuming it's working ok, it just seems so convenient. Elmo, a few years ago, I went to Montreal and the airline misplaced my luggage. I had to go haul myself downtown (NOT close to where I was staying) and go shopping (I certainly couldn't stay in my airplane clothes all day and evening). I was rather annoyed, lol. Since I assume ME won't lose my luggage and at most there would be a few hours delay, I'll just take a few changes of clothes with me in my carry-on.

Thanks again!

When you use DME and its baggage delivery process according to the instructions, you would file a claim at the front desk if you discovered things missing which could be when you get back to your room after the park closes. It would then be handled in the same way as if on another trip elsewhere you had discovered things missing and had made the claim at the airport.

Note*** You can also handle your own bags instead of having ME do it for you

* Tip is appropriate. Whereas no tip is needed during the Magical Express delivery process and you do not need to wait in your room for the bags.

This is what I'm afraid of. Our flight gets in at 8:07pm. I was thinking about just getting our luggage and going to the bus that way. I wonder how long we will have to wait to get our luggage and then how long we will have to wait for another bus or if they only have a few running that late.

DME works very well as long as you understand how it works. When tagging your checked bags, you can expect to see them up to four hours after resort checkin. Now, if you check in at your resort at 9pm, after arriving at 7:30, then your bags may very well not arrive until close to midnight or even a bit after. I always recommend not tagging bags if you arrive at MCO after 7pm..unless you are planning on staying up late anyway.
Very few bags are misdirected by DME. I'm not sure what the UnOfficial Guide was talking about, but here, on this board, we saw maybe one post from someone who had a bag be misdirected by DME. The bag got sent to the wrong resort...was found and sent to the right resort. I have a feeling that the bags that are 'misdirected' or 'lost' may very well have been misdirected by the airlines. Or, if at a value resort, realize that the luggage people just don't make frequent runs to get luggage to the rooms.

If you choose to get your own bags, you have to remember that bus drivers will be looking for gratuities from you. Yes, tipping is included when you use DME but it has to be used the way it was intended to be used....DME takes your tagged luggage for you, not you getting the luggage. DME takes care of tipping Bell Services at the resort level for each bag that they move for the guest. If the guest chooses to get their own bags, then they are responsiblefor tipping bus drivers and Bell Services.

What happens sometimes with the bags is that the baggage handlers at the airport don't see the ME tags and send them to baggage claim. My DD and I saw this on our last trip. While waiting for my luggage to come we saw 2 or 3 bags on the carousel with ME tags. My DD is a CM at one of the resorts, when we were leaving the airport she stopped at the ME counter and made them aware of the bags so that someone could go retrieve them.

I assume though that when this happens the bags probably sit in baggage claim for a while before someone from ME is notified and the bags are taken to the resort.

This is within tolerances. The goal is that the bags will make it to the room about 3 hours after you (asynchronously*) can. (No room deliveries at Pop Century and All Stars between about 10 PM and 6 AM)

Alternatively you can request down at the front desk that the bags not be brought up until dawn.

*The bags follow a completely different path, including on a truck and not a DME bus from the airport.

DME works very well as long as you understand how it works.
The above quote are words to live by!

I love love love The Unofficial Guide, but I'm very surprised by their views on Disney's Magical Express. The latest edition I read was 2009, but in that edition I was totally shocked by their take on DME. You know how they quote parts of letters/e-mails from people? At least one of the customer quotes revealed a total lack of understanding how the system works, something about people surprised that they wouldn't have immediate acces to their checked bags as soon as they arrived at their resort, and then the UG commented that yes, there are often problems with the luggage service.

But my response is NO! That is not an example of a problem. It's an example of misunderstanding what DME offers and promises. Right there in the DME booklet, it says to expect your bags about 3 hours after you check-in at your resort and it advises you to take what Disney calls a "day bag" for anything you'll need immediately.

So I don't know how in the world such a smart book like the UG can agree with a guest who was bothered that she didn't have immediate access to her checked bags.

But it does show that the UG doesn't understand DME like we'd expect them to understand it.

Can you imagine what it would take in order to have the guest have their bags, in their rooms, at checkin??? There are a couple of issues here....first, your room may very well not be ready for hours when you check in. So, even if you get to your resort at 11am, and your room isn't ready until 3:00, then there is no way that your bags are going to magically appear in your room in that 3 hr window. There is NO room for them to go to!!
Or....let's imagine the kind of system that would be necessary to get bags to the resort within 30 mins of the guest arriving there. The bags would have to be grabbed, scanned and immediately put onto a resort specific truck for delivery. Now, you would have to have multiple trucks going to each one of the WDW resorts. People are constantly arriving and using DME. It would be a nightmare.

So...it makes perfect sense to not expect your bags immediately upon arrival. If it is important that you have those bags, then leave them untagged and get them yourself. Bring them to the DME bus with you and they will go underneath your bus. But as I already said, tipping will be expected by both the bus driver and the bell services person at your resort if your room isn't ready yet.
This is pretty much how the system currently works..at least it's how it was explained to me.....DME tagged bags, arriving between 7am and 10pm, are pulled out of the group of bags coming off each plane. They are scanned as they are put aside. Then, they are grouped by resort area...DTD, Epcot, MK, AK. They are scanned again. They are then put on trucks going to a group of resorts. I 'assume' that they are scanned when they reach the resort. Yes, sometimes a bag gets misdirected by DME, but it is easily found and sent on it's way.

I, too, have an issue with the UoG saying what they say. No, DME isn't for everyone. There are those who want to rent cars, there are those who prefer to book a car service. That's fine. But to put out downright incorrect info about a 'free' service is just wrong. People need good, correct info in order to decide what is best for their family. If they are told that DME doesn't work well, that it takes hours on end to get to your resort, that luggage is frequently lost...well, how are guests to make a good choice??? They will feel that DME is just a big old mistake and they'll spend well over $100 for a car service. But if the only reason they did that was because they thought DME was awful??? Just not right.

I loved ME and luggage delivery. We had no issues. Now I was prepared just in case however. We had a couple of backpacks with us that carried a few essentials, total change of clothes, swim suit, etc - just in case.

Honestly, I was more worried about the airline losing our luggage than Disney.

DME worked exactly like it was designed to work for our recent trip (2-28 thru 3-8-11). We landed around 3pm at MCO, caught DME to ASMo, checked in, freshened up and the 3 of us were walking down Main St. at the MK by 5pm for dinner and to soak up some atmosphere. It only took about 45 minutes from the time we walked up to the DME loading zone until we arrived at our resort. We returned to our room at 830pm and our luggage (and shipped packages) were waiting for us.

For anyone checking bags, it just makes good travel sense to have a carry on with a change of clothes, shoes, etc. JUST IN CASE your luggage gets misdirected. I used to work for a Fortune 200 company and traveled a lot on business. After the FIRST TIME your luggage goes to Seattle when you're going to San Antonio...you learn to be prepared. Mistakes happen, but to label a value added service like DME as horrible without a proper sampling of guest experiences is unfair.

I felt that DME was excellent...from start to finish. The day before we left WDW we received our DME return documents and info and everything was spot on. We returned to MCO with plenty of time to get through security and grab a bite to eat and we didn't see our bags until we landed in Columbus, Ohio.

We're already planning a return trip to WDW in November, 2012 and we'll be using DME again!

Not the airline, but rather Elmo007's seeming misunderstanding of how Magical Express luggage delivery works.

The DME packet Guests receive with their luggage tags indicate luggage should be expected up to four* hours after checking into the resort - not arriving at the airport. With an 8 PM plane arrival, a 9-9:30 resort check-in makes sense...as does, therefore, a midnight to 1:30 AM luggage arrival.
