Hijinks & Shenanigans but not much Mayhem@The Dark Side+Disney:Link to DL/Hawaii TR

My vote would be Hawaii or the west Coast. We loved Hawaii 30 years ago and if it weren't for the fact that I don't think I could handle that long of a flight, I'd go again in a heartbeat.

As for the West Coast, we keep talking about hitting up Disneyland and our so went to San Francisco over 4th of July and raved about it so now we want to do that too.

Dee - catching up... Love the "chance meeting" with Nannette. The background story to the chance meeting is excellent!

I vote for CA too. Love it there. We have been many times and so much to do and you can still get a little Disney fix. Think your boys are at a great age for a CA trip. My boys first introduction to Disney was actually Disneyland when we were in CA visiting one of my friends, the boys were 4 and 8 years old at the time. Hawaii - I have passed through twice on my way to New Zealand, but DH has been and we are hoping to go back once we get the boys through college!

4) West Coast

California has a lot to offer- San Diego (World-Class Zoo, Sea World), Newport Beach, Disneyland, Universal Hollywood, San Francisco, Yosemite.

Should we design a trip to visit a lot of these highlights?

One of the obvious advantages of a California/DL itinerary is the very real possibility of meeting up with Brenda (emmysmommy) if we happen to be there at a time when she is not visiting Florida.

Hi Dee! cough... cough... West Coast cough... cough...

Honestly so many great options but for teen boys you can't go wrong with Universal Hollywood, DLand and Ca Adventure, Knotts Berry Farm, and beaches. Five hours north of OC/LA there's also Big Sur.

Good luck with your planning! :)

My vote is for doing a California trip or Hawaii. I have only been to San Diego, which was beautiful but have always dreamed of one day going to Hawaii:beach:

Then I've always wanted to take a trip to the Holy Land (Disneyland) because you can't be a true Disney fan without seeing where it all began!

I think we are ready to take a break and try something else.

These are a few leading contenders for our summer trip:

1) National Parks tour

None of us have ever seen the Grand Canyon, never been to Yellowstone or Yosemite. It seems like something we should do.

One of the problems I see with this itinerary, though, is that there is really no way to get the big three in one trip. Plus, I am envisioning that by day 3 we will start hearing

"We're looking at more rocks today?"

You can hit at least 2 in one trip. We did a 2 week road trip one summer, from Seattle, through Yellowstone and the Tetons, Denver, Garden of the Gods, Santa Fe, Grand Canyon, then back through Southern Utah, Salt Lake City, Pendleton Or and then home.

You could do a modified version. Ours was a bit ridiculous, over 2000 miles and while we all loved it and the kids still talk about it...no one has had much interest in a long road trip since! Then again 6 people in a mini van with it so full there were bags under the kids legs the whole time...will do that.

Though that hasn't stopped us from doing it again, just not quite as long. You could start in Yellowstone though and do a half loop of sorts and hit a lot with that, flying out after the Grand Canyon. What was neat for us was the mix of the parks and the cities, wonderful diversity and all of it kept kids from getting bored. As we were driving ourselves, we actually camped during the Grand Canyon part, it was supremely cool and fun. Definitely a trip everyone remembers and a lot of "I want to go back there somedays" from all the kids.

2) Hawaii- Cruise or Land-based trip

Again- none of us have been to Hawaii. Which is a shame because my family really loves tropical locations: the beaches, swimming, snorkeling, volcanoes, rain forest, pineapples, coffee& We would love to visit the USS Arizona Memorial in Pearl Harbor, especially Ben.

This destination is perfect for our family.

Except for the travel time!

Mark doesnt know if we can hack the travel time it takes to get from the east coast to Hawaii. The longest flights we have taken have been about 6 hours, although we did have an entire day travel on our way back from Mexico last February.

Does it make sense to try to schedule an extra day or two and do something on our stopovers in Las Vegas, San Francisco, San Diego?

Then, cruise or land-based? We have price quotes for both.

My 2 cents here. You would LOVE Hawaii and it is a shame. Bur breaking it up is very smart for 2 reasons, time difference and flight time. I would NOT bother with Vegas (to me it is not at all a place for kids in any way shape or form). I would do San Fran, or if you want a bigger Disney fix, do LA and get a couple days in at DLR. SF is so wonderful (plus it does have the Walt Disney Museum which is amazing) and it's got lovely flight options to HI.

I wouldn't cruise. At all. You'll have 4 at sea days, rough seas possibly for some of it and then just port time.

As for multiple islands, that is ideal but it does depend on how long the trip is. Inter-island flight is just as long and tedious as any regular flight, same process and timing, especially out of Honolulu where security can take forever. On the other islands, not so bad. You will lose time in travel, no way to avoid it, probably half a day each time. Which, can be worth it.

Those are sucky flight times if you ask me. If you do a layover in Cali, you can easily get a PM flight to Hawaii that gets you in at night. It will feel really late to you, you'll be ready to crash and then get up and truly enjoy the day. Landing in HI at 6am? if you are renting a condo maybe on the room, not so sure about other spots, especially during spring break. That sounds a bit brutal. If it were me I'd want at least 3 nights on each island to make up for the time lost in travel and even with that, 4 is better. think about what you want out of each island too. I've not been to Kauai yet. it is gorgeous but maybe not the most interesting place for the boys. I'd consider skipping it and going for a 3-3-3 night option or something like that. to me, 2 nights isn't worth it. At all. You'll be frustrated. Ok, I would be. I think you really need 4 somewhere to relax!

3) St. Lucia

Mark and I have been to St. Lucia twice. The first time we went, in the early 90s it was an unspoiled paradise- there is a drive-in volcano, rainforest, beautiful beaches and decent snorkeling. A couple of years later, it was more commercialized and now that it is a frequent cruise stop Im sure it is even more developed.

But it offers a lesser version of some of the things Hawaii has, with much shorter travel times (like 6 hours). But its not Hawaii!!!

I'm sure it's lovely but it will be much more similar to stuff you've done in Mexico I think. I'd go out of the box and I'm not sure this is.

4) West Coast

Mark and I have spent very little time in California, the boys have never been. Mark has never been to Disneyland, I cant really remember the one day I spent there with my dad and brother.

Ellen (podsnel) just did a neat trip with some of that in it, you may want to check it out as it's got some great stuff. I do think Hawaii is a better fit for your gang for something really different with all the elements you love, and if you break it up (on the front end, who cares at the end lol), the travel really is manageable

All caught up!! Ah, child abandonment due to the Disney bubble. It's really amazing the kinds of things people will do in the parks (leave expensive cameras out on strollers, walk away from their children etc) all because "They are in Disney". It's still the real world people!

What a way to punish you at La Hacienda!! That food looks simply divine, hopefully I'll get to try it someday (I'm slowly expanding Kevin's palate )

Now, my .02 on Summer 2014.

1) National Parks - My family did a Grand Canyon trip and it's definitely worth seeing! I do understand your worry about "nothing to see but rocks" - my dad famously asked our hotel concierge what the locals did for fun, and she replied "Go to WalMart" :scared1: Haven't made it to the other parks, so I can't comment. Grand Canyon could be a fun stop over on your way to Hawaii!!

2) Hawaii - it'd definitely a long flight from Boston, but doable. (Remember the flight home is usually an hour shorter due to the winds!) My family did 2 weeks there, 1 in Kauai and then 1 in Maui. This really was a perfect trip because the islands are so different, so it felt like we got two different vacations - a week of forests and jungles and the laid back Kauai attitude, and then a week of perfect beaches and a little more metropolitan on Maui. :thumbsup2:thumbsup2 from me! (For the record, my dad and 2 brothers preferred Kauai and my mom and I preferred Maui)

3) I've never been to St. Lucia, but we did to St Maarten, which I didn't love - I think we were there after a bad storm, because everything was a mess, and we also stayed on the Dutch side vs the French side, which I've heard is nicer, but none of us care to return. But that's not St Lucia so I'm not much help!

4) California - I think Cali is like 5 vacations in one state! We've done San Diego, and I did a DL trip with Kevin earlier this year. There is a LOT to do with a lot of different feels and experiences to have. It's definitely a must do for everyone!

Can't wait to hear what you decide!

Sounds like you have a planning dilemma on your hands Dee. I'm sorry that I can't offer any help/suggestions since we've never been to any of the places that you are considering.

I got a wild hair a few months back and mapped out a long road trip to California and back for our 2014 trip. We were going to the Grand Canyon first, traveling on to Disneyland and staying for a few days, then heading back home by way of Phoenix and making our last stop in Roswell. We would have been on the road for 7 out of 13 days and I knew that it just wouldn't work out. We'd be tired of driving and tired of one another. :crazy2: Sooooo, we are booked at Disney again. :rotfl:

I'd vote for Hawaii and I'd break up the flight by staying a night somewhere in California. I'd see as many islands as possible unless, of course, you plan on going back to see what you missed ;-) We went for our honeymoon and regretted spending only 1 day on the Big Island. Of course you can always add a little Disney by staying at Aulani ;-) Have fun planning - wherever you go - and of course I will look forward to the trip report.

Hi Dee!

Catching up again and love the updates! Really a great review of La Hacienda - we love it there and your photos and descriptions really make me want to return! That's a great view and a wonderful table - and perfect timing to enjoy the view!

Grey Goose slushie and a DisMeet - a great combination! Thanks for sharing the photo with us! Too funny about Mark and the boys - we'll cross paths someday and maybe we'll get a photo of the collective eye roll from a total of two husbands and five boys! :)

As for your future travel plans, I probably need not even register my vote because you already know that's it's Southern California and, of course, :cheer2:Newport Beach!!:cheer2: I need to hop over and update my Newport thread at some point. We did SO many new things this year since we were there for nearly three weeks over the summer. We're returning in January to enjoy the off season!

For those interested, here's a link to my Newport thread: http://www.disboards.com/showthread.php?t=2895078

Second choice = Hawaii. We've never been, but it's on our list. And it really does sound like it would be perfect for those of us with active boys! My concern is the same as Mark's - that and the cost. But boogie boarding in warm water sounds wonderful, so I have a feeling we'll get there someday!

However, unless you really really enjoy crowds....there are other beaches besides Newport that are much prettier.

Fighting words, PoppyGirl, fighting words!!! :)

Haven't read the comments about planning your trip for next summer, but it all sounds great. CA would be easiest, and there is so much to do. DL, at least a one way trip up to San Fran or down to LA on hwy 1. I had at least a 20 year break from a CA, and I hope to get back again soon.
The national parks are awesome, and actually you could see Grand Canyon on your trip to CA, it you want to really pack it in. Stay at one of the rim hotels, we stayed at Bright Angel, and loved the rustic feel and proximity to the canyon!
Hawaii, never been, but we have a trip planned in Feb. I can not wait, 3 islands, 3 nights oahu, 3 nights Kona then 7 in Maui. And I am sure I will be happy not to have to move again once we arrive in Maui. A big trip should be that, I would skip St Lucia, but that's just my 2 cents. I am enjoying this trip report, and wondering if I will ever venture to Universal.........

Once again, I thank you all so much for your suggestions and opinions. Your helpful input gives us a lot to think about and I am anxious to get our plans in place. I'll let you all know what we end up with.

Hopefully in the next day or so, I'll have a chance to update ny Disney trip report and once again get caught up on all of yours!

Busy week- I "worked" on Monday- I was learning a program about Colonial Trades and Bartering for elementary students at the Topsfield Fair. Yesterday I chaperoned Ben's field trip to the Peabody Essex Museum in Salem NH and I am going again with the other classes from his grade today because they didn't have enough chaperones.

I think its so great that you are planning so far ahead.

I vote for West Coast - simply because there have been so many east coast DISers going out there and having a fabulous time. I think I am going to plan to Spring 2015. So if you plan before me I can use your itinerary. :rotfl2: Just Kidding. No. Really. Just Kidding! :rolleyes1

Duly noted- consider west coast to help Mary Ellen with her future travel plans!

Thanks for the vote.

:thumbsup2

Yes, it is that darned flight time that is holding us back!!!

But I suppose if Hawaii was closer, it would just be another typical vacation spot.

:)

I vote for CA too. Love it there. We have been many times and so much to do and you can still get a little Disney fix. Think your boys are at a great age for a CA trip. CA is tempting. There is so much to do!

My first exposure to Disney was at DL, too. A one day trip with my dad and brother while my dad was on a business trip. I don't remember much about it though, and boy has it changed!!!

:)

Hi Dee! cough... cough... West Coast cough... cough...

You are one of the reasons I am seriously considering at DL visit. I would love to meet you. Just have to come up with the cover story about how I "casually" ran into you!!!

I need to get back to your Hawaii report. I think if we do Hawaii we will limit the number of islands, ideally two. I need to figure out which ones.

Thanks for the heads up on podsnel's report. I'll have to check that out.

I also need to catch up on Pat's great Disneyland report.

Research, research!

I really think if we do Hawaii, we will try to fit in something on our way out.

Dee - catching up... Love the "chance meeting" with Nannette. The background story to the chance meeting is excellent!

Rebecca

I loved meeting up with Nannette!

While Mark was there, she mentioned her October trip at AKL- she had room for a fellow traveler- but I didn't pass the vetting process when Mark outed me as a snorer! (Light of course)

Although he did helpfully add that I don't really sleep much while at Disney (which is true), so it really doesn't impact my fellow travelers)

:rotfl2:

All caught up!! Ah, child abandonment due to the Disney bubble. It's really amazing the kinds of things people will do in the parks (leave expensive cameras out on strollers, walk away from their children etc) all because "They are in Disney". It's still the real world people!

I'm sure you saw some pretty interesting parenting moves in your time working at Disney!

We loved, loved, loved La Hacienda! I hope you are able to get Kevin there to try it. Nate is pretty picky, but getting better and we didn't know if the restaurant would work for him but he really liked the food. It wasn't "in-your-face" Mexican spicy.

:goodvibes

I remember you really enjoying La Hacienda! It is definitely on our must-do list now.

Now I suspect that if I happened to meet you at the Grey Goose Slushie stand it is possible that it would be a chance encounter! I'll just look for the gal with the refill mug!

:rotfl2:

Well Dee any closer to making a decision????
That's a loooong flight to Hawaii but if you can break it up along the way it wouldn't be so bad.Or afford an upgrade on the flight to give a little more leg room maybe?
Ben would love all the Titanic stuff here :) Think my son just got fed up with it because they did so much about it in primary 7 (aged 10/11)-plays, made models, learnt facts and then some, "hot seat" days (see what I mean :rotfl2:).

Heard on the news today that people got stuck on RRR at universal for over 2 hours :scared1:

No decision yet. We have a long weekend here, so hopefully the family will have a chance to discuss our options and narrow down the plans. I don't see much of Mark during the week and when he gets home we are both too tired for important discussions!

I do like the idea of breaking up the trip to Hawaii with a couple of overnights.

Yes, Ben would love the Titanic stuff- but I know what you mean about overkill!

Teena texted me about Rip Ride Rocket- she said it was on all the local news. Then I followed a couple of threads that had info links.

YIKES!!!

I just hope the people who were stuck had chosen their ride song wisely if they had to listen for 2 1/2 hours!

Big decision... hope you get a chance to talk it over. I always love taking vacation. My vote would be for the west coast, or Hawaii but I agree - don't try to do 4 islands your first time. I did 2 and it was perfect for a 10 day trip since hopping from island to island involves flying.

We are getting closer to a decision. We have a package we think we like, but as we do more and more research we keep wanting to change things up.

I'll keep you all posted! Hopefully we will have an announcement next week!

Long Time, No See Everybody!

:wave2:

It has been FOREVER since I have posted an update- I apologize for that.

And I had promised to catch up on everyone else's report, too. That didn't work out so well, either! :rolleyes1

I'll start by recapping the past day to catch everyone up

We started out at the Hard Rock Hotel. Arrived at the Wizarding World of Harry Potter at 7 am and we continued playing at Islands of Adventure until 10. We checked out of our room at Hard Rock, made our way to my beloved Beach Club where we checked into a most amazing room. By 12:30 we were at the Magic Kingdom, enjoying some Disney World classics. We witnessed a child abandonment at Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh. Took the monorail to EPCOT and although we were a wee bit late for our dinner reservation, we did enjoy a spin on Space Ship Earth. We had an amazing dinner with fantastic views at La Hacienda. And I capped off my night by meeting my friend Nannette and enjoying my first Grey Goose Slushie.

I have since received my photopass CD and here are a couple of pictures from that day:

It is now our first full Disney day, Wednesday July 17. What's on tap? It was Extra Magic Hours at Animal Kingdom so we planned to spend the morning there. Then hop over to Hollywood Studios for lunch at Sci Fi. After returning to the Beach Club for a short break, we would venture to Downtown Disney for dinner at T-Rex. Then back to the Beach Club, where I encountered another friend...

Flocking is a fundraising phenomenon where a group, like the high school band, receives a donation from someone who names a friend (or enemy) and subjects them to a late night visits from vandals who place a plethora of plastic pink flamingos on their lawn. The family who has been flocked will then pay to have the flock removed and placed on someone elses property.

BOOing is a different tradition we have enjoyed in our neighborhood for the past several years.

Basically, you prepare a couple of treat bags to deliver secretly at night to your neighbors along with the above instructions. You ring, run and watch!

Here's one sample-

I mention both of these because we had a similar experience that morning.

At 5 AM, I grabbed my refill mug to head to the lounge for some coffee to enjoy on the balcony. I opened the door and discovered...

We Got MOUSED!

One of my friends, Catho72 was staying down the hall and had left this friendly confetti greeting for us! This started my day off with a smile.

After returning to the room with my caffeine fix, I sipped my coffee out on the balcony, enjoying this incredible view as the sun started to come out:

The rest of the troops started stirring around 6 and we all got ready to visit the lounge at 7 for breakfast.

I just started a thread with photos of the Beach Club Stone Harbor Club featuring the club level food and drink offerings: Beach Club Stone Harbor Concierge

Here are a few of the pictures from breakfast that morning

Oatmeal and add-ins

Each day, a different assortment of pastry and muffins are offered.

Here's a picture of my breakfast

It wasn't very crowded- plenty of places to sit.

When we finished, we went to the bus stop and just waited a few minutes for the bus.

We boarded to discover that we had not entered a bus, but were now trapped in a walk-in freezer. The air conditioner was on full blast and it was COLD!!! Uncomfortably cold. We really should have asked the driver to turn down the air conditioner, but we didn't.

I whispered to Mark "Is this the bus to Animal Kingdom or Blizzard Beach?"

:cold:

Soon enough- 15 minutes later- we were in the AK parking lot and deposited in the early morning heat of Florida in July.

Next up: A Wild Time in Animal Kingdom

You've been Moused! That's so cute, what an adorable idea! I have heard of the flocking thing, but not seen it. I live in the boondocks, not really a neighbourhood so I can't say that I have actually done it, but it sounds hilarious.
Breakfast selections look good!
I hate when the busses are too cold. It's hard on hot days because the contrast is so sharp!

That sneaky Catho72! I can't believe you guys kept that secret on the BC thread and not leak a word of it. That was a really nice surprise. :goodvibes
