High School Class of 2016/College Class 2020

Glad the move-in went well @luvsJack! and WVmom!
We leave in 3 hours to drive down-move in tomorrow. Car is packed. Classes start next week but these first 2 weeks have welcome stuff going on.
EEEKKK can't believe this day is here already!

Good luck, hope all goes smoothly. Stay strong, lol!

I don't know how big the trunks are that people are talking about, but she had no extra room for something like that. I thought she had underbed storage but there was 2 big drawers under her bed. That was nice, but we thought we could store some bins under there and could not. She has no locking safe or trunk. Hopefully it will be OK.

We bought a trunk this weekend that we are hoping will fit at the end of her bed. The problem with new construction and only seeing pictures is that we can't buy much until she actually gets in the room and we see what space she has. We went with the trunk anyway since DH likes it and will keep it if DD doesn't have room for it. We also found a cute, locking file cabinet that can double as a bed-side table if the trunk doesn't fit (we will go back and buy that if the trunk doesn't work).

FYI, many dorm rooms automatically lock. My dd's school uses the school id as the key, and there is a pin pad as well.

In the email DD received, it said that her school ID is also her room key, used to pay for meals, etc. So she will have to find a way to carry it around that is easily accessible. I do hope there is a keypad on the door also, as a backup.

Dd moved in today! Her room is nice enough. Ugly carpet but she plans to buy enough throw rugs to cover most of it. There is a large vanity area, bathroom with shower and the bed areas are seperated by a half wall. The bed is high enough to slide the small dresser underneath and has room for her trunk. She added a end table with storage and then she has her desk and fridge. She is thinking of adding some of the plastic drawers in the large closet.

She met two or three girls on her floor but as of right now she has no roommate. We asked about it and they said she may be coming late but if she doesn't show, dd will have the room to herself. Her and the other girls are already talking about putting one of their tvs on the empty side so they can all pile in to watch Pretty Little Liars and Vampire Diaries together. Lol.

Her boyfriend moves in tomorrow and she promised to come help. Classes start Monday. And there are flyers up everywhere of social stuff going on every day for the next two weeks. Her head was spinning trying to decide what time she can do what so she can fit it all in.

She was happy as a lark when we left. Her dad not so much.

Congratulations on her move in! Hard to believe after all this time planning that we are finally there. :)

We also got DD moved in over the weekend. I was the one contemplating needing to get a small trailer to get hutches and headboards for her room. As it turned out, her roommates parents offered to take their Sequoia and between all of our vehicles we got everything loaded without needing the trailer. I was really relived because I would have felt pretty funny driving up with a trailer attached to our suv. Although I will say, there were lots of kids moving in with trailers loaded up.

In our case, everything fit very nicely into their room and it looks great! All of DD and her roomie's planning really paid off and I know they are going to enjoy their room.

We left when all the big stuff was done, but they still had things to put away and straighten up. I wish i could go back in a couple of weeks to see everything now that it's put away. But, since she's a little over a 6 hour drive away, we won't be going back until family weekend which is the first weekend in November. I'll have to make due with pictures for now!

I know!! It wasn't real until we actually had to leave her. My friend's son moved in Sunday. She cried all the way home, bless her heart.

She found out today that a couple of other girls in choir are without roommates. They are talking about seeing if they can room together if the school brings in someone off the waiting list.

DD is the same- student ID (called their Action Card) is used for access to buildings, meal plan, debit card to pay for laundry/vending, admission to events, etc. They need to have it on them at all times. There were several booths at orientation that were giving away neat little card holders- a little rubberized pouch/envelope type thing that their card slides into. It sticks onto their cellphone so they won't forget or lose it (as long as they don't forget or lose their cellphone, lol). I thought it was a pretty cool thing- DD has hers and it has been great.

I need to put together a first aid kit. Any ideas what she'll need? I'm thinking Advil, band aids, neosporin (or something like that), what else?

We also put DayQuil, cough drops and a thermometer. My daughter and her friends like fun band aids so she has a bunch of Mickey ones. :) We thought about sunscreen too but it never happened.

For small injuries: bandaids, antiseptic, ace bandage
Other: Advil/Tylenol, cough syrup, Tums, Pepto, Imodium

All of that. I thought I had a nice first aid kit put together for DS then he got a terrible cold 2 weeks after leaving home. Without a car, he had to drag himself across campus to the clinic. They took good care of him, but it would have been easier if he had a better variety of stuff there in the first place. I sent a first aid "booster kit" soon after with more OTC meds.

Not to worry. There's been a can of sunscreen in my son's stuff since freshman year and I just saw it unopened when we moved him back on Monday for Senior year. At least if he gets burned now I don't carry any of the guilt.:p

We leave a week from today. (He has to be at school on Thursday, but traffic getting to the Verazano bridge has been a nightmare for months!! We'll leave Wednesday afternoon, get there for dinner, and relax at the hotel instead of stressing about being stuck on the Belt Parkway.)

He's working right up until Tuesday, so the packing will probably get done this weekend.

That's OK. I'm planning on camping out on the Cross Bronx ion two weeks when we drive up. I do not miss NY traffic.

We moved DD in Monday-went pretty well. The assisted move in had her stuff and up in dorm room in about 15 minutes. Didn't take too much back (couple pillows). Went to town 20 min away to get her storage stuff and a few more snacks for room. Her roommate moved in a couple hours after she did so worked well. Her roommate has a car and apparently they've already done a shopping trip for extras for the room LOL. This week is all welcome activities and classes start next week. I was fine coming home (had to drag DH out of the dorm though-think he would have stayed til he tucked her in). Well- I was fine until I dropped my 10 year old off for 5th grade and it hit me that my babies really are getting older...

Move in for ds was yesterday. It was so mellow. The school provided huge boxes on wheeled carts to put your stuff in. We fit almost everything in one of those and took it up to his room. DH made one more trip without the cart with the rest. DS's roommate was parked next to us when we were unloading. We hung around most of the day as we didn't want to leave him until the roommates parents left. It was all quite surreal and I think we are both still shell-shocked that he is actually gone. Classes start on Monday.

This experience was very unlike dropping off older ds two years ago. That day was crowded, rushed and much more emotional. His college is small and they had a freshman "ceremony" that was very emotionally draining. I much preferred yesterday. We move older ds into his off campus apartment on Saturday and my "baby" started high school this morning.

Pretty emotional week around here. Good luck to those still moving in....It's quite an emotional ride.
