High School Class of 2016/College Class 2020

Apologize if this has been asked but did you get some kind of laptop lockbox or safe? Daughter is leaning more towards a safe as she also wants to put her purse and wallet besides laptop. The safe that we were looking at though weighs 80 lbs yikes!

We got dd a locking trunk and a combination lock. . It can be used to store a few extra clothes or towels or sheets but mostly its for her lap top and whatever else she needs to lock up.

I don't think a lot of stealing goes on in the dorms but they can have visitors and we have no idea who her roommate is or who her friends may be.

One of her guy friends suggested it. He has one to put his laptop and ps4 in.

We are going to look at the locking trucks tomorrow. Since she is in a quad room, there could be lots of guests, etc. Along with her computer, she has an expensive drawing tablet that probably won't be going with her to class so it is best to keep it locked up when she is away for hours at a time.

We were thinking of the trunk for those reasons too. Even if she forgets to lock it, everything is out of sight. Hopefully it will be tough enough that she can throw a pillow on top and use it for extra seating too, if needed. Now to just hope that she remembers to actually put her stuff away in there. But she is very protective of her drawing tablet so hopefully she will :)

I didn't fit my older one (graduated college in 2014). I probably won't for this one either. As long as she remembers to lock her room, we should be fine. Is there a particular crime problem at this college? Some are more problematic than others.
No crime problem that I know of. Daughter doesn't want to get a trunk, space issues. We don't know if her roommate would be diligent in locking the door to their room.

My DD and BF move in on the 27th and just found out that the 3rd roommate changed dorms.

Well thank goodness - the dorm information finally arrived :) Looks like she got the tail end of the move-in times (5:00 pm). Oh well, she has a roommate now (plus 2 other dorm mates) and the roommate already sent a friend request on facebook. Now things can start moving along!

We moved in today. Went fairly smoothly, but we left hours after I thought we would because she was still packing. They had tons of student helpers and they had our car unloaded and to her room quickly! That was great. She brought way too many clothes, not enough hangers. She has a lot of drawer space and a fairly big closest but the space gets filled quickly! Good luck to everyone else with their moves!

I don't know how big the trunks are that people are talking about, but she had no extra room for something like that. I thought she had underbed storage but there was 2 big drawers under her bed. That was nice, but we thought we could store some bins under there and could not. She has no locking safe or trunk. Hopefully it will be OK.

FYI, many dorm rooms automatically lock. My dd's school uses the school id as the key, and there is a pin pad as well.

Maybe those are newer buildings? My son had to lock his with an actual key. That pin pad idea sounds great though!

Lol. They definitely aren't new! But you use your id like a hotel key card. After a few lock-outs, they start to charge you. We finally got a pocket to attach to the back of the cell phone case. Because the phone goes everywhere - even the bathroom! :rotfl2:

Really, most of the things my dd had 'stolen' last year were really items left behind: a couple jackets, water bottles, shoes.

I think it's interesting to hear about the other things available at other schools. I just assumed that since my son had been in an older building, that's why they still had old fashioned keys. His roommate freshman year lost his key one day and it cost him $85 to have the door re-keyed.

That is how my DDs is. We got locked out each time we moved something into the hall because the door would shut behind us. Her lock is the same as this, keypad and ID.

We bight DD a small lockbox/safe at Target ($20). It won't fit a laptop, but will fit her iPad, wallet, and Private papers (SS card, etc.). It has a handle, so we'll lock it to the side of her closet. (Her room has a wall of 6 closets--3 for each person. One is more of a built-in dresser with a door and the other two have hanging space, so we can run a cable around the rod and through the handle of the safe.). Her school is pretty secure--the kids all leave their coats and backpacks in cubbies outside the cafeteria and there is never a proctor or professor present when an exam is given--but it is better to be safe. Especially because so many campuses rely on "dining dollars" or "U bucks" instead of actual money. If she had something stolen she may not even realize it for a while.

Dd moved in today! Her room is nice enough. Ugly carpet but she plans to buy enough throw rugs to cover most of it. There is a large vanity area, bathroom with shower and the bed areas are seperated by a half wall. The bed is high enough to slide the small dresser underneath and has room for her trunk. She added a end table with storage and then she has her desk and fridge. She is thinking of adding some of the plastic drawers in the large closet.

She met two or three girls on her floor but as of right now she has no roommate. We asked about it and they said she may be coming late but if she doesn't show, dd will have the room to herself. Her and the other girls are already talking about putting one of their tvs on the empty side so they can all pile in to watch Pretty Little Liars and Vampire Diaries together. Lol.

Her boyfriend moves in tomorrow and she promised to come help. Classes start Monday. And there are flyers up everywhere of social stuff going on every day for the next two weeks. Her head was spinning trying to decide what time she can do what so she can fit it all in.

She was happy as a lark when we left. Her dad not so much.

Nice to hear move in went well. I hope she does have a single. That would be great!

We ordered a laptop security box from Jet.com. It's a First Alert brand for $57 free shipping. I hope it gets here next week

Glad things went well for those who moved into dorms. We move her in on the 24th.

I am going to get a couple bath rugs with the rubber backing for Daughter to put by her bed this way I don't have to buy a vacuum, she can just wash the rugs as needed.

Does her dorm have vacuums to borrow? Al dorms at DD's school have items to borrow--vacuums, pots and pans, bakeware, etc. She just needs to give her Student ID and when she returns the item she gets her ID back.

I wondered about vacuums too. Not sure they have any to borrow but might suggest she ask. She is going to want to use some carpet frehsner and a vacuum at some point.

Glad the move-in went well @luvsJack! and WVmom!
We leave in 3 hours to drive down-move in tomorrow. Car is packed. Classes start next week but these first 2 weeks have welcome stuff going on.
EEEKKK can't believe this day is here already!
